Once the addendum is prepared, make sure that a copy is provided to everyone holding
a copy of your will, including any copies kept at your home, with a solicitor, or copies
kept in safe deposit boxes at one or more banks.
As with a last will and testament, not all jurisdictions require that an addendum be prepared by a solicitor in order to be binding. Obtaining the services of a qualified solicitor will aid in making sure that both the will and any codicils are worded so there is no room for contesting the wishes of the will maker.

A Place in your Will for
Reigate Park Church
As Christians we are called to exercise good stewardship over all that God has entrusted to us. By making a Will we can ensure that our stewardship continues after we die. A Will should be a clear practical expression of our love and concern. It provides us with the opportunity to continue our support for the people and causes we value. If we do not make a Will, the law of the land decides what happens to our assets. Most of us will want the members of our family to benefit from what we leave behind. You may also wish to leave something to the United Reformed Church. Making changes or additions to a last will and
testament is sometimes necessary as life
circumstances change. One of the more common
approaches to making those changes is known as the
addendum or codicil. Rather than having to submit a
complete revision of an existing will, choosing to
create an addendum in order to manage a minor
change is normally sufficient. In most jurisdictions, the process is very simple
and considered an inexpensive way to update the terms of a last will and
testament.
1 Specify the changes in the terms of the will that the addendum will
impact. A codicil may be used to revoke a term in the will, add an heir or
make any other changes necessary to reflect the new circumstances.
2 Take the final draft of addendum to a solicitor. Legal counsel can
determine if the text complies with jurisdictional laws and make any
necessary suggestions for altering the text. The solicitor can also offer
advice and assistance in preparing to associate the codicil to the existing
will, including arranging for a formal witnessing or review of the document
by a notary public.
3 Sign and date the addendum. In some jurisdictions, this must be done in
the presence of witnesses, with all parties identifying the date that the
action is taking place. There may also be the need for an additional section
3
to the document known as an Attestation. This is simply a verification by the
witnesses that they are in agreement that the maker of the will is of sound
mind and body, and has created the codicil of his or her own free will, without
coercion by any party.
