The New Face of Cancer Care Where Hope Lives, Excellence Thrives

For nearly a century, Pocono Medical Center has served our community with a steadfast commitment to our mission of providing world-class care, closed to home and our vision of a healthier community overall. In doing so, we have refined and expanded our services to meet the most prevalent healthcare needs of those we serve. In 2007, we addressed the number one cause of death in Monroe County at that time, heart disease, by opening the ESSA Heart and Vascular Institute. Now, our focus rests on addressing today’s leading cause of death in our community by building a new Cancer Center, one that will provide the best possible cancer care.

Our Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center has remained on the leading edge of cancer care since its inception in 1988. Our three-year accreditation with commedation from the Commission of Cancer of the American College Surgeons, for instance, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to practicing the most advanced protocols while providing the very best in patient care. Most importantly, it speaks to the exceptionally strong foundation upon which we prepared to build. We are proud of our accomplishments, and must look to the future, and the future shows an unequivocal need to expand our Cancer Center. The cancer rate in Pennsylvania continues to be one of the highest in the nation. While here in Monroe County, the cancer rate ranks as one of the highest in Pennsylvania. As you will read in the collection of stories from cancer survivors and supporters provided here, this disease is truly hitting too close to home, making it our obligation, as your community hospital, to expand our services.

Our vision is grand but not unattainable. Our supportive community, our dedication to excellence, our reputation as a leader in cancer care — these are the true bricks and mortar that will build the new Hughes Cancer Center. With a focus on providing human-centered care, state-of-the-art technology and the most advanced treatment protocols, our new Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center will introduce the bold new face of cancer care — one where hope lives and excellence thrives.

“We have lived in this community and raised

our family here. We have seen the growth and

accomplishments of the Dale and Frances Hughes

Cancer Center, and because of this success the

current Cancer Center has outgrown its space.

Our pledge is a vote of confidence, but it is just a

check. The people in the community have voted

with their lives.

This pledge towards the construction of the new

Cancer Center helps, but it doesn’t get the job

finished. The Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer

Center is there for all of us, and it should be built

by all of us.”

$5.25 million towards the construction of the new

Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center.

At approximately 58,000 square feet, the new Cancer Center will be nearly five times larger than our existing Cancer Center. The new, two-story structure will be located directly across from Pocono Medical Center (PMC), on East Brown Street. All services pertaining to cancer care — services that are currently fragmented from our existing Center — will be housed within the new facility. Providing a comprehensive continuum of care under one roof will offer our patients and their loved ones much needed comfort and convenience. In addition, centralizing these services will streamline patient/staff flow, eliminate congestion, and allow us to operate more efficiently.

Our project will create a design that expresses PMC’s human-centered philosophy of care provided in a healing environment, which contributes to the health, well being, and optimism of cancer patients and their families. We will incorporate the most advanced medical building technologies needed for cancer care, enhancing the services provided in the Pocono community as the sole community hospital, designed by Medicare. The new facility will also be designed to meet the LEED Silver standard as an expression of PMC’s commitment to the design of healthy environments.

“When my mom was diagnosed with breast

cancer, it turned our world upside down. I’m so

grateful to the Hughes Cancer Center for

helping us survive this devastating disease.

With their compassion, attentive, and expert care,

the Hughes team was fabulous. We bonded with

all the staff, nurses physicians, oncologists and

surgeons. Mom’s tests and treatment ran like

clockwork. We got her results immediately, and

there was no waiting around. I’m a busy mom

working two jobs myself. The Hughes Center

always worked around my schedule to make

Mom’s appointments, so I could be there for her.

We are so happy to have this ‘extended family’ in

our lives. I only have rave reviews for Hughes!”

“This team has a chance to do more

than play basketball. They have an

opportunity to grow academically,

athletically, socially, and feel

connected to the community. When

we realized that everyone on the team

was affected by cancer in one way or

another, we committed our efforts to

the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer

Center. Every member of the team is

excited and embracing this project.

As the players plan and implement

fundraisers, they begin to understand

their role in society by giving back

to society.”
