THE LEGEND OF TRADER DUKE

T rader Duke had firmly established his frontier trading post near Lake Champlain when territorial claims by New York and New Hampshire began to provoke Vermont settlers. Recognizing

neither state would likely back down, Vermont retaliated by declaring itself an Independent Republic in 1777. The Green Mountain Boys were organized to defend the interest of Vermont against all outside threats, which now included the British as well as the “flatlanders.” Because Trader Duke’s post thrived, becoming a magnet for bartering farmers, traders, and travelers, he began serving as an intelligence network for the Green Mountain Boys, providing information about British movements on Lake Champlain. In one infamous outing, Trader Duke rallied his local Rum Runner Rebels to paddle across the lake near the British encampment. Duke, who had perfected an English accent and acquired a military uniform to go with it, managed to relieve the guard protecting the food supplies. Once Duke was in place, his cohorts replaced the entire stock of rum with homemade vinegar. Back at his trading post, premium British rum was served “compliments of the palace” for almost a year. Historians write that British troop morale suffered considerably that winter. Trader Duke was an original Yankee: resourceful, ingenious, independent, and possessing the unfaltering work ethic necessary for survival. We’re proud to keep his spirit alive. And despite his original bad manners, British Citizens are cordially welcome.
