sampad: promoting excellence and access in south asian arts since 1990

Welcometo our summer season programme. This year we are delighted to be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore, a hugely influential South Asian poet.

The Bengali polymath, from Kolkata, was the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, and he left a deep impression on South Asian arts during the last century. Many sampad projects have celebrated his legacy or have been sparked by a line of his poetry.

This summer we will be launching our latest international writing competition ‘Inspired by Tagore’, so budding writers get your pens ready! We will be announcing details on our website, and at our Tagore events coming up, so watch this space.

There are a host of festivities in honour of Tagore across the country – from Dartington Hall in Devon, to Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon (pg4).

In June we are hosting an afternoon for all the family Celebrating Tagore at mac in Birmingham (pg5), with artists from his homeland, West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Mid-day Mantra (pg3), our free monthly classical music concerts continue on Saturday afternoons at Symphony Hall. Ravi Shankar, one of India’s most recognised and esteemed musical ambassadors, returns for what will be a truly special concert, marking his 90th birthday (p6).

We’re very excited to be taking sampad arts mela (pg7) to The Public in West Bromwich in July. Join us for a fun-filled day out for family and friends, where there will be lots of fantastic free entertainment and workshops to enjoy, from the best local artists, as we bring a taste of South Asia to your doorstep.

Visit our website, www.sampad.org.uk, for all the latest information and events this summer. And don’t forget to join our mailing list online for access to more special offers, competitions and rewards.

Best wishes, Piali Ray OBE, Director
