    HOW WE BEGAN

Comm unicAID was founded in 1994 by a group of citizens con -cerned by the rising number of homeless people in BaltimoreCounty and a lack of services available to assist them. The found -

ing group combined with the Baltimore Council of Churches toform CommunicAID. In 1995 Baltimore Medical Center donatedfree of ce space to CommunicAID. This allowed CommunicAIDto hire a full-time director.

Within the next year CommunicAID conducted its rst fundrais -ing campaign from which one of the food pantries was doubledin size and another was converted into a soup kitchen three daysa week staffed by volunteers.

In 1998 CommunicAID secured a grant from the Maryland Hous -ing Authority for the renovation of a building on HolabirdAvenue for the CommunicAID of ces and the citys rsthomeless shelter.

The mission expanded quickly to attack the problem on a larger scale by assisting thehomeless to nd work. By empoweringthe homeless, CommunicAID givesthem the tools to uplift themselves andthe community.
