SAM Elections andNominations.

This year (2009) we will hold elections to fill the officesof Treasurer, Midwestern Vice President and EasternVice President.

Ron Boots has continued to do his usual excellent job asTreasurer and Ron will be running for reelection.

Larry Davidson is the dean of all the SAM VicePresidents, having served longer than any of the otherVPs on the Board. Larry will be running for reelection.

Glen Poole is not going to run for reelection to the officeof Midwestern Vice President, so this office will need anomination.

Nominations for other candidates for any of these threeoffices are open and will remain so until January 31.

Ballots for a postal election will go out in the March-April SAM Speaks. After the voted are counted thewinners will begin their new terms on Sept. 1.

Rules Change Cycle Completion

Past President Mike Myers appointed three committees toconsider competition rules changes. The RC RulesCommittee was chaired by Bob Angus with FredMulholland and Bob Angel as members. Gene Wallockchaired the FF Rules Committee with Ed Lamb and JimO'Reilly as members. Glen Poole chaired the ElectricRules committee with Dave Harding, Jack Hiner, SteveRoselle and Jay Burkart as members.

All three committees fulfilled their functions, and theirreports were presented to the Board of Directors at theMuncie SAM Champs. The rules which were approvedby the Board for consideration by the membership will bepresented in the Jan.-Feb. Issue of SAM Speaks, alongwith a request for comments from the membership.

SAM Speaks - November~December 2008 - Page 3

It is anticipated that discussion, comments and ballotswill be presented in the May-June issue of SAM Speaks.

The results will be published in SAM Speaks during thesecond half of the year to take effect on Jan.1, 2010.

Class B Cloud Rider

Ed Konefes sent in a sketch for his 50 inch Cloud RiderFuselage model. It was built and flown in 1941. It usesthe same wing and tail group as the 50 inch Cloud Snoop-er. Ed is sending a copy of the 50 inch Cloud Snooper toAMA so they’ll have the plan. Aerodyne also has theplan available. It’s a simple matter of duplicating the fu-selage length and moments of the Cloud Snooper to scalethe Cloud Rider up. (Cloud Snooper on Page 5)

Gull Wing Pacific Ace Sportster

Gordon Codding was a bit ahead of his time and a cre-ative designer. I met Gordon at Rosecrans and Westernin the late 40’s or early 50’s.He was flying a Comet Sail-plane with a Dyna Jet mounted above the wing. It was anexciting day at the field. In 1941 Gordon made a great

looking redesign of the Modelcraft Pacific Ace. The opencockpit and wheel pants give it the Pylon Racer appear-ance. The plans may be scaled for wood sizes. I think Eutwill love this one. The step-fin Ohlsson Gold Seal reallysets it off. It looks like Gordon was going to trim it withfeathers. (Codding Pacific Ace on page 6)

Class A Bullet

Gil Morris did an outstanding job of drawing up TomSuter’s Class A Bullet. Gil won first place in Class A Py-lon at the 2008 SAM Champs with his Bantam poweredBullet. Congratulations are also due Gil for being the topman on the FAI Power Team at the 2008 US Team Selec-tion. (Tom Suter Class A Bullet on page 7)

Atom powered Banshee

Bob Larsh sent me a letter stating he witnessed a scaleddown Leon Shulman Banshee, in Indianapolis, whenWWII was still going on. It had a 41 inch wingspan andapproximately 235 sq in area. It seems reasonable thatfour sizes of Zombys had two sizes of Banshees as com-pany. (No drawing available)

Thermal Hunter No. 2

The July 1939 Popular Science featured Frank ZaicsThermal Hunter No. 2 as a feature article. It’s a 36 inchspan Commercial Rubber design with very pleasing lines. Its 14 inch prop should give it plenty of pulling power.(Plan on page 8)

1934 Wakefield International Cup

Charles Dennis Rushing drew up a 3-view of WalterGetsia’s proxy flown 1934 Wakefield entry. His highlyrated contender suffered non-repairable damage duringpreparation for the second flight. I’ve included Charles’review of the events. (Drawing on page 9)

International Contest Flyer

Frank Zaic was a prolific contributor to Popular Science. He had an article on Fred Bowers 2nd place WakefieldModel in the June 1940 issue. As I recall, that was thecontest where Dick Korda had his terrific flight. Do youguys remember that this was the contest where the Cana-dians used balsa blast tubes to protect their models duringwinding. So what’s new? (Plan on Page 10)

SAM Speaks - November~December 2008 - Page 14

By Mike Myers, Contest Manager

The Dates The 2009 Comet Model SAM Champs plans are almostcomplete. We’re going to hold the contest on El Dorado Dry Lakesouth of Las Vegas, Nevada, in October, 2009. We’ve got a contractsigned with Boulder City, Nevada (they control the lakebed) whichwill let us have use of the lakebed from Sunday, October 4 throughFriday, October 9, 2009. Contest events will be flown from Monday,October 5 through Friday.

Contest Management Mike Myers is the Contest Manager. Steve Roselle is the RCContest Director. Ted Firster is the Free Flight Contest Director forboth the SAM OT FF events and for the Nostalgia Gas events. WestCoast Vice President Dick Griswold and SAM Treasurer Ron Bootswill be looking over our collective shoulders as “SAM Management”to keep us on the fiscal straight and narrow. At the moment (earlyNovember, 2008), I’m still looking for a volunteer for the task of“registrar”. That’s the person who takes in the advance Champsregistration applications and keeps a list of the contestants.

Why Is It Called The Comet Model Champs? First, we intend to celebrate the contributions of the CometModel Company to old time modeling in general, and to SAMmodeling in particular. Second, the designation of specified “modelsof the year” in years past has led to building of models which, all toooften, are flown in only one contest. So we did not want to repeat thatpattern of asking contestants to build a “hangar queen”. Many of ushave chosen to build a Comet model for the SAM events in years pastbecause we liked the model or we think it’s a good flyer. So a CometModel Champs was a time to let all those Clippers, Zippers,Sailplanes, Clodhopper IIs and Sparkys that we already have, come ondown to El Dorado Dry Lake and show their stuff.

Comet Model News and Comet Related Material Nancy Kapitanoff, the daughter of the Los Angelesrepresentative of the Comet Model Company, has made a nicehistorical documentary called “The Comet Model News”. We’ll beshowing that documentary at the Champs. We hope we can procureuse of one of the big screens in the cinema multiplex at the hotel for a“big screen showing”. Ms. Kapitanoff will also speak at the ChampsBanquet.

The Contest Logo, Shirts, Hats, Cups and such Luther Peters of Fountain Hills, Arizona, has done a greatcontest logo for the 2009 Champs. It should be well received. Weintend to put it on pocket T-shirts, golf shirts, sweatshirts, caps andcups. It will be silk screened rather than an “iron on” logo so shouldnot smear, or wear out. A similar silk screened logo on 2001 Champsshirts and sweatshirts is still proudly worn today and is in good shape.Ron Boots, SAM Treasurer, had an earlier career as a men’s wearbuyer and is “coming out of retirement in the rag trade” to make surewe get good quality “goods” for Luther Peter’s great logo. Moredetails will follow once we select a supplier and firm up prices. It maybe possible to order and receive 2009 logo goods well before nextyear’s Champs.

The Hotel, Room Rates and Reservations The headquarters hotel will be the Fiesta Henderson, thesame one we used for the 2007 SAM Champs. We’ve arranged for ablock of rooms there at a rate of $50 + tax per night during the weekSunday through Thursday and $100 + tax per night on Fridays andSaturdays. These rates represent about a $3 per night reduction fromwhat the Fiesta charged us in 2007. To get the room rate, call FiestaHenderson Room Reservations direct at (800) 388-8334 no later thanSeptember 2, 2009, and identify yourself as a member of the SAMChamps 2009 group.

The SAM Events that Will Be Flown We intend to fly all the basic and the special RC and FFevents in the 2006 Rulebook with one possible exception (theexception is the Electric Rubber Unlimited Event—which, dependingupon membership votes on rule amendments in the Spring of 2009,may be eliminated from the Rulebook and replaced by the Speed 400event. We will also have a Compressed Air event, using the rules asthey were stated in 2000 Rulebook. Ron Boots will sponsor this event. There will be a Comet Phantom Fury one flight mass launchevent. The Comet Phantom Fury is a 32 inch wingspan rubber model.Phantom Fury kits are currently available from Lee Campbell and BobHolman. Jim O’Reilly has said he intends to draw a new plan for theFury, and it should be available by January. Karl Gies is the sponsorof this mass launch event. There may be a Tomboy event. If so, rules for the Tomboyevent will be posted later. A list of the SAM Rulebook events to be flown will beprinted in this issue of Speaks.

SAM Speaks - November~December 2008 - Page 15

Will There Be Nostalgia Events at the 2009 Champs? Yes, as we have done in years past, we will have events for¼ A, ½ A, A, B, and C Nostalgia Gas, and Nostalgia Rubber, andNostalgia Wakefield.

What Comet Models Are Eligible for the Champs? A list of the Comet model designs that appear in the SAMApproved Gas Design List and the SAM Approved Designs ListRubber is printed in this issue of SAM Speaks. We’ve been asked about flying Comet scale models. TheChamps’ purpose is to fly SAM Rulebook events, not to be anotherFAC national contest. Any Comet model entered in one of the SAMChamps events will have to meet the rulebook requirements for thatparticular event. The “natural fit” for Comet rubber scale models isprobably in the Rubber Scale event. They might also be built to fit therequirements of the Gas Scale FF event, or the ½ A RC Scale Durationevent. Since Comet rubber scale models were not generally includedin the SAM Approved Design List Rubber, there is a question as towhether a pre 1943 Comet rubber scale model should be allowed inthe Spirit of SAM event—which is generally limited to models on theApproved Design list. This issue is under consideration.

Costs, Registration, Bean Feed and Banquet, Ladies Day—Information to Come We’ve not yet set the costs for entry fees, the bean feed or thebanquet. The hotel will not set catering prices for the 2009 year untilJanuary so we don’t know what the banquet will cost—yet. If thingscan be worked out, the bean feed will be held in an outdoor venue witha nice view out over El Dorado Dry Lake. That would be a pleasantbreak from the recent bean feeds. In earlier Champs times the beanfeed was just that—a pot of beans cooked by John Pond on the field. In recent times it became just another meal in a hotel banquet room. We’re working with some of the wives and the Boulder CityChamber of Commerce to set up an enjoyable ladies day during themiddle of the Champs week. Registration and application blanks will be printed in eitherthe March~April or May~June 2009 issue of Speaks. They should beavailable on the SAM Website around the 1st of March.

C - Note that I have listed both the FF Fuel Allotment basicevent and the FF Special Texaco event. I don’t know ifwe’ll fly both of them, but the West Coast guys would liketo.

There will be special awards for the best perform-ing Comet model in each of the 2009 Champs events. Youdon’t have to win the event—you just have to have enteredthe best performing Comet model in that event. So if yourComet Sailplane places 3rd in the C Pylon FF event, you’llget the third place contest plaque—and the special Cometaward. Here’s a list of the most common Comet Models—in both Power and Rubber.

There is very little in the model engine press about theWillard engine. Remarkably advanced in design andconstruction, it was made in very small numbers in the late1930s by Willard Hungerford, in Los Angeles, California. The only person I have known who owned and flew theWillard, was the late Robert Preston White (Bob White),the Wakefield champion. Years ago Bob told me he rodehis bike from Pasadena, where he grew up, to WillardHungerford's home and purchased an engine. Bob said itwas a very good runner. He no longer had the engine andcould not remember what had happened to it.

Writing as editor of the MECA Bulletin Number 13, Aug.1966, Art Swift said: "Willard -- on page 51 of the Septem-ber 1938 Flying Aces magazine in a feature called LoggingThe Model Market, is, I believe, the only published photowith an accompanying ad for the Willard engine.” Thephoto is of a badly mangled gas job with a Willard engineresting in the ruins. The ad goes on to brag of the sturdyconstruction of the Willard engine and notes that this verysame engine was flying another model within a couple ofhours! The bore and stroke was given as about 5/8 inches. Now in production, the Willard is available at $17.50complete." A copy of that ad (pasted up for publication)is included with this article. The ad copy was obtainedfrom Gene Wallock, SAM Librarian and all-around goodguy.

Other model engine mavens have told me that there aresmall variations in construction from engine to engine, indicating a low total production volume. Further infor-mation on Willard Hungerford and his engine would beappreciated and if sent to me, will be added to this OldEngine Analysis, when the complete collection of 100reports becomes a book.

Disassembly --- As mentioned above, there are smallvariations in construction of each Willard, so your enginemay not be exactly like the specimen examined here. This

one has no serial number and is on loan from WardHallenberg’s collection.

Remove the prop nut, washer and drive washer. Loosenthe timer pinch screw and slide the timer off forward. Itmay be necessary to lift the moving point slightly withyour fingernail to move to point tail out of the cam slot inthe crankshaft, allowing the timer assembly to slip easilyoff the front case. Note that one of the three sections of thefront case (between the mounting bolts) has been slightlyrelieved to clear the timer advance stop pin. When reas-sembling the engine, this side must be replaced in itsoriginal position for the timer to fit and operate properly. The timer maybe disassembled further, but that is notrecommended. The point gap setting of 0.010 to 0.015inches can be adjusted by resetting the locknuts outside theinsulating washers at either end of the fixed point.

Fuel tank --- The aluminum tank is retained to the tank topcasting, which on this engine is an integral part of theintake tube, by an aluminum stud swaged into the tankbottom and fastened to the tank top by 4-40 nut. There isa paper ring gasket at the tank top. Removal of the fueltank allows access to the two 3-48 by 3/16" screws thathold the tank to the crankcase. There is a thin paper gasket. The needle valve lower body appears to be a tight press fitinto the tank top casting. I did not attempt to remove it.

SAM Speaks - November~December 2008 - Page 19

Crankcase, cylinder and internals --- Remove the ex-haust stack (two 3-48 by 1/4" screws) to allow access tothe two 4- 40 by quarter inch screws retaining the cylinderto the crankcase. Remove three 4- 40 by 15/16" screwsand nuts holding the front case in place. There is a thinpaper gasket. The crankshaft comes out with no looseparts. Remove the two holding screws and lift off thecylinder, along with the piston, connecting rod and wristpin assembly. There is a thin paper gasket here as well. The piston may be removed out the bottom of the cylinderand detached from the rod by slipping out the wrist pin.Note that the lower section of the rod is not symmetricaland that the longer side of the lower end of the rod goestoward the crankshaft. The cylinder head appears to bethreaded into the top of the cylinder, I did not attempt toremove it. The rotor disk can now be lifted off its centerpin and removed. Note that the disc has a recess for thecrank pin to drive it. This must face forward to reassemblethe engine. The disc center pin is retained in the rear casepiece by a set screw. Neither this screw nor the pin shouldbe removed.

Reassembly --- This engine goes back together easily byreversing the tear down procedure. Sequence of assemblyis important to be able to access the various screws.Remember to oil the moving parts and install gaskets asyou go. The plug that came with the engine tested was aV3 size, however the combustion chamber is deep enoughto take a V2 size plug. Spark gap should be about 0.015to 0.020 ".

Test run --- The Willard 19 started easily and turned a TopFlite 10/4 wide blade prop at an outstanding 8300 rpm onthree to one gas to oil fuel. The engine was quite smoothin operation and ran a long time on the tank full of fuel.

The friends of the SAM-RC EUROCHAMPS hadmet this year in Italy from June 13th to 16th, 2008. In Italyagain, as two years ago. The first intention to meet inHungary could not be realized due to the sudden and un-fortunate death of Gyula Munnich who had promised toorganize the meeting. After a doubtful time, if theremight be another possibility to meet, Nico Bruschi suc-ceeded in managing the competition in Italy again. Welldone, Nico! All participants should be obliged to him, having saved the competition for this year. Many thanksto him and also to Sergio Scirocchi, the president of theItalian SAM Chapter 62 and his willing helpers.

We all liked to come to Italy again. A very favor-able airfield, accommodation in nice locations at the sea-side of the Adriatic sea and a well performingorganization had made the whole event to an agreeablestay. With great pleasure we could welcome our Ameri-can friends. Ed Hamler had organized for the US group acruise in the Mediterranean Sea and other tourist activi-ties during the days before.

During the first competition day everything hap-pened as scheduled However the second day sufferedfrom very poor weather conditions. Strong winds and rainduring the whole day had made every flying activity im-possible. Due to the missing second competition day, allremaining flights had to be performed during the last day.A reduced and modified adaption made possible that allclasses could be flown, favored by excellent weather con-ditions.

Unfortunately disappointment and frustrationcame up in a few situations when some flyers with lim-ited engine run were disqualified. It was not possible toconvince the official persons about the effect of sonicspeed which gives a remarkable retarded informationabout the engine stop. A simple calculation shows thatfrom a model in high altitudes the delay can be in therange of one second (sonic speed about 320 meters, 350yards per second). We had this problem already duringearlier events. Hopefully it will be better understood andeliminated for the future.

Apart from this exception all other organizationwas well done, including a nice banquet and a happy win-ners award ceremony at the end of the last day.

There are every year two completely differ-ent events in vintage flying: - Many years ago David Baker, thefounder and present honorary president ofSAM 1066, had started the EURO-CHAMPS for free flight models which isnormally flown on the Middle Wallop air-field in South England end of August. Atraditional event with a lot of internationalparticipation. - About seven years ago some Europeanparticipants at the US SAM CHAMPS hadthe idea for the RC-EUROCHAMPS inEurope, limited to RC models. Nico Br-uschi together with other Italian modelershad organized the first competition in Italy.A rapidly growing event which meanwhileis scheduled every mid-June in changingEuropean countries. Some figures mayshow the difference to the traditional USSAM CHAMPS:During the RC-EUROCHAMPS of the re-cent four years (2005 to 2008) we couldcount in an average: About 150 active models participating inthe classes: Gliders (26%), Gas models andNostalgia (7 and 8%), TEXACO (16%),1/2A TEXACO (13%), Electric Oldtimerand 1/2 Electro (15% each). That means, in accordance to the traditionalEuropean model history, a big proportionof gliders, a very limited number of tradi-tional engine models, (Gas and Nostalgia),and a continuously growing number ofelectric models. A new introduction forthis year had been the 2.5 cc Nostalgia class.

The US SAM rules are the basis also for theEuropean events, with some modificationsregarding to the different situations.

Heinrich Dabrowski from Germany built thisbeautiful "Under Construction" from a Michael Rollsdesign using information shown in the 1938 Zaic Year-book. (No Plans available) He scaled it up 200% forTexaco to 127 inch span and 1147 sq in area. Weightwas 2650 gr (5lb, 9 oz) with a 1960 Irvine .40 Diesel. The fuselage is hollowed out solid balsa starting with athickness of 5/32" in the forward section and thinning to1/16" behind the wing.

Heinrich is a very competent builder and flyer, afierce competitor, and is always really out to win. In theEuro Champs there is a special prize for the overallwinner based on points, ( 3 for a 1st - 2 for a 2nd and 1for a 3rd place). This year I personally offered theTrophy for the winner of the overall. Heinrich was thewinner.

In Europe we can fly any model from the 1930sup to 1956 in some events. So there were: Herky, Gool,Cloudster,Super Kentucky, Airborn, Playboy Sr.,Jx0656, Dallaire Sportster, Bomber, Sinè 46, Ramrodand Folly models flying in the NMR event. In the NMR2.5 event there were: Scimitar, Jaded Maid, Mini Hogan,Airbon, I-Rico,Cumulus, Dardo, Kerswap, Old Girl andSuper Phoenix. In this event there was a mixture of fastrunning diesel and glow engines. Perhaps my BarbiniB40 TN was the fastest (21,500 rpm on a 7x3 1/2 prop).Heinrich used a very powerful OS 2.5 glow turning17,000 on a larger prop. The models are very fastclimbers and great fun to fly. The event was an experi-mental one for the first time in the Euro Champs.Nick from San Morino

Correction of an oversight in the last issue of SAM SpeaksThis note from Van DoverGot a call from Herb Kothe about He and Larry Davidsonnot being recognized as the Rubber and PoweredChamps. Herb won with 22 points and Larry won with 30points. There are seven events selected by the SAMChamps schedule makers and the contestants can onlyearn points in these events. A first place is five points andfifth place is one point. Larry flew and scored in all sevenevents. Herb flew in seven events and scored in six ofthem.

Some comments regarding SAM SPEAKS 201,page 31, and Earl Fortners idea about a throttle carburetorfor the Forster 99: Here is another example for the same purpose, asshown in picture 1. Nearly the same idea. The carburetor,OS 20A, which is used here, has the same inner diameteras the original intake tube of the engine. With a woodenpropeller 16 x 8, a gas oil mixture 1 : 4, and the pre warsmall round exhaust extension, an engine speed of 4.500RPM is possible. That will be enough for a safe start fromground of my Anderson Pylon weighting 7.25 lb. During a first attempt with the original Forsterthrottle carburetor, picture 2, the engine speed was limitedto a disappointing 3.900 RPM, with the same other detailsof the engine. That seems to be too low for the big mod-el. The reason is the rather big throttle unit, shown inthe middle of picture 3, which results in a remarkablereduction of the intake air fuel mixture, even at full loadoperation.

I believe it was in the early 1950’s that some of our clubmembers in the Long Beach (CA) “Thunderbugs” werebeginning to fly rubber models after flying gas power forseveral years. The rubber to have then was Pirelli, madeby the largest rubber company in Italy, best known forautomobile tires. Rubber strip for model airplanes was avery minor sideline of course, but Pirelli was all conquer-ing in the rubber events of the time, particularly in Wake-field. Oh, we had Dunlop and T-56, but Pirelli was king.

One of our younger club members was Dino Cocchi. As Iremember, he is a first generation Italian-American and hisfather had emigrated to the U.S. before WW II. Dino’sfather planned a trip to the “old country”, Northern Italy, and the opportunity to get some fresh Pirelli at a good pricedid not escape Dino, so he asked his father to pick someup. His father asked what kind and Dino said ¼ inch stripand about five pounds should be enough.

Dino’s father had an extended visit to Italy and Dino andthe rest of the Thunderbugs eagerly awaited his return. Finally, after about six weeks, Dino came to the clubmeeting at Swaney’s Hobby Shop with a smile on his faceand a box under his arm. As the meeting progressed – wewere quite formal in those days, using Robert’s rules forrunning our meetings – everyone’s curiosity finally got thebetter of us and we had to ask, “OK, Dino, what’s in thebox?” Now with a sort of sheepish grin on his face, Dinoanswered, “I have my Pirelli and I will share it with anyonethat wants it”.By now Dino had the box open and he pulled outa handful of 1/4 “ square Pirelli rubber strip. Dinocontinued, “I should have given my Dad a betterdescription of what I wanted. This is the rubberstrip that is used to tie the grape vines to thetrellises in the wine country vineyards and ismuch more common than the thin rubber modelstrip we use.”

We did use the rubber strip to support our FreeFlight wings from the headliners of our sedansand station wagons for a number of years. I doubtanyone used the ¼ square strip successfully as arubber model motor, however.

Dino, if you are out there, maybe you can add toor dispute this story.
