For direct propeller drives without gearing and propulsion powers in excessof 4 MW these systems are based onthe principle of speed controlled synchronous motors. In this applicationthe most appropriate solution in technical as well as commercial termsare synchro-converter drives. For thisreason the majority of shipping companies in the cruise liner markethave opted for this solution from thevery beginning.

Synchro-converterpanel for one propul-sion windingsystem 1/2 x 15MWon cruise liners“Norwegian Sun”,“Norwegian Sky”and “Costa Victoria”with cooler panel, thyrister rectifier, DCintermediate choke,thyrister inverter,excitation converterand control system

Synchro-converter drives have distinctadvantages over other systems:■ Far less components for power and

control electronics with simpler and more robust system structure.

■ Protection of the converter thyristorsin case of short circuit in the mains by electronic assemblies which existanyway without additional devices as e.g. high speed circuit breakers.

■ Lower level of harmonic interferenceand therefore better mains quality: 24-pulses propulsion systems as standard configuration comply with classification rules without additionalmeasures as e.g. filter circuits or duplex chokes.

Since 1966 SAM Electronics with theirsystem division Energy and Drives, carrying on the technology and industrytraditions of its predecessor AEGMarine branch, has delivered more than150 converter fed propulsion drives forapproximately 50 ships. This sums up toa total propulsion power in the range of more than 350 MW. Synchro-converter based systems are also usedin SAM Electronics‘ shaft alternatorsystem, delivered or in order more than340 units since 1967.

Cruise Liner “Pride of America”

The cruise liner “Pride of America” willbe delivered by the German ShipyardLloyd Werft in Bremerhaven toNorwegian Cruise Line (NCL) in 2005 forworldwide operation. The project wasstarted in 2001 in the US on Ingalls shipyard for an American operator andhas been changed after bankruptey ofthe operator to NCL which decided tofinalise the ship in Germany. Manydesign changes were incorporated forthe new owner including a ships leng-thening of one fire zone with 25 metersto extend the passenger accomodationand the power generation capacity.

Under the survey of DNV and ABS theship was built under US flag to allowunrestricted operation between US portsand specially prepared for the Hawaiisland cruise.

Pipelay Vessel “Solitaire”

The pipelay vessel “Solitaire” was delivered to the Dutch offshore companyAllseas after conversion by the Singaporeshipyard Sembawang and by the Englishshipyard Swan Hunter in Newcastle.

With a displacement of 76900 tons“Solitaire” is the world’s largest pipelayvessel. She is equipped with a dynamicpositioning system according to NMDclass 3, extended firing line and a 108 mstinger and has been designed to laypipes with a diameter of up to 60inches at a rate of up to 6 km per day atwater depths exceeding those reachedby moored barges. The vessel’s largehull with 8 thruster drives and dynamicpositioning permit work to be performedat unlimited water depths and underadverse weather conditions, since tugboats for mooring are not required.

For dynamic positioning 8 synchro-con-verter fed thruster motors are providedwith the following benefits:

■ Reduced operating costs since only the power for the thrust actually required is taken from the network. Under no-load conditions less than 5% of the rated current including excitation is required. Asynchronous motors require 20-35% of the rated current under no-load conditions.

■ Reduced losses in the low power range amounting to approximately 1% of the rated power. The losses of a CP propeller at low load amountto approximately 25% of the propeller design power.

■ High efficiency over the entire speed range.

SAM Electronics’ scope of supply:

■ 8 Diesel electric azimuth thruster drives with:- 8 double winding synchronous

motors 4.3 MW, 465 rpm,- 8 synchro-converters 24/12-pulses

with control systems,- 16 cast resin propulsion transfor-

mers 3 MVA.■ 8 Diesel alternators 8 MVA, 10 kV,

60 Hz, 514 rpm.■ 2 Switchboards 10 kV with 2 x 18

panels for medium voltage distribution.

■ 12 Cast resin transformers 2 - 3.5 MVAfor low voltage mains supply.

■ Communication and navigation system.
