    TSC Update

    Goodbye Aoife,Welcome Doris

Amendment 3New recruitment proceduresWe are very pleased that Substantial Amendment 3 has

been approved by the lead ethics committee and is currentlyunder local R&D review. Once activated for your site, you willbe able to approach newly admitted women who have notreceived information antenatally, provided they are in early stages of labour, or are comfortable with epiduralRefer to the amended protocol (V6.0) for full details! Please note: Despite this, every effort should still be made to approach

women about SALVO during antenatal screening! All women with non-elective sections continue to be

eligible, but we ask you to avoid recruiting women havinga caesarean section after a failed induction, who have noother risk factors for bleeding (e.g. thrombocytopaeniaetc). For the purpose of de ning failed induction in thiscontext, this is a failure to enter established labour asde ned by NICE guidance, which is progressive dilatationfrom 4cm with regular painful contractions.

We are really pleased withour overhauled patientinformation sheet thankyou to everyone whocontributed, and particularlyto Paul Ayuk. We will print

customised versions foryour site (with local contactdetails) and send them to youby November.

The SALVO NewsletterStudy to assess cell-salvage in obstetrics

Our rst Collaborators meeting was held at Barts Hospitalin London on 3rd October. Team members from 21 sitesattended thank you for your enthusiastic attendance!

We heard updates on the trial from Phil Moore as well assummary of the pilot study from James Geoghegan; the teamfrom Shef eld gave a veryinformative presentation onswab washing. Phil Moorepresented a case of placentaaccreta; and as a specialtreat, Ana Pilar Betrn fromWHO presented interestingfacts and gures on theglobal use of Caesareansections.

The Trial Steering Committee met on 15th September. TheCommittee would like us to remind everyone to considerroutinely washing swabs in theatre, as this will dramaticallyincrease the volume of returned blood during cell salvage.

We are saying a sad farewell to Aoife Ahern, our previousSenior Trial Coordinator. We wish her all the best for thefuture in Ireland and thank her for her stellar work for SALVOthroughout the last one-and-a-half years. You will be missed!

At the same time, we would like to welcomeDoris Lanz, who has taken over fromAoife as the new trial coordinator. Dorishas previously worked within QueenMary University within the Centrefor Psychiatry, and prior to that hascoordinated cancer research trials in hernative Switzerland.

As of 30th September, our total recruitment to SALVO was 1594, and the monthly recruitment was 43. Given that most of thesewere emergency Caesareans, that is an impressive number! Still, we hope that with the new amendment, you will be able to approacheven more women about the study. The next few months of recruitment will be particularly important for the future course of theproject many thanks in advance for all your efforts!
