WELCOME TO SALUDA Academic Achievement Saluda County School District has boldly envisioned an ideal learning environment for its young people. Five schools serve the district’s 2200 students in pre-kindergarten through 12 th grade. Approximately 150 teachers are employed in the district. A multi- year, professional development effort centering on curriculum, instruction and assessment is the driving force credited with academic accomplishments. Faculty are engaged in professional learning communities that address topics such as writing across the curriculum, balanced literacy, problem solving, teacher-made assessments, and observation strategies. Community Support and Involvement The district’s involvement in the community abound, and are evidenced by events such as an annual rodeo, periodic community blood drives, participation in Relay for Life, recognition of veterans and service members, student volunteers serving at the local nursing home, and student participation in highway cleanup efforts. Similarly, citizens of Saluda County can be counted on to lend efforts as volunteers, mentors, and supporters of the district’s educational system. Saluda Primary School serves students in grades 4-K through 2nd grade. There are about 25 teachers and 20 support staff employed at the school. An energetic and outgoing staff cooperate well together other to provide the best experience possible for all students. Guidance and administrative support are ranked superlative. ESOL teachers collaborate with regular classroom teachers to assist limited and non-English speaking students with their studies.

Saluda Elementary School, grades 3 through 5, has approximately 20 teachers and 15 support staff employees. The school’s community garden, planted and maintained by volunteers, is centered between two major hallways and visible from classrooms and walkways.

Hollywood Elementary School serves students in 4-K through 5th grade who live close to the Lake Murray area. Three teachers per grade, along with activity and guidance and special education teachers, make up the staff of this small but high achieving school.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the school while in session to experience the students, the instructional pace, and collegiate feel among faculty and staff.

Saluda Middle School offers a smooth and fun-filled transition for its 470 young students in a similar but slightly scaled down version of the adjoining high school. The middle school schedule incorporates 6 period days minute blocks comprised of math, ELA, science, social studies and related arts, as well as a 60 minute Power Period for additional instruction.

Middle Level Related Arts: PE, Art, Computer Literacy, Band

Saluda Middle School’s athletic program is completely integrated with high school athletics, so that there is a smooth transition at each level. Students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities which promote self -esteem and social skills. Middle level teachers are active in these extra-curricular activities, and play an important role in making the middle grades an exciting and fun place to learn and grow.

Saluda High School’s 575 students and 45 teachers learn and work in a state of the art facility. Opened in 2001, the Educational Complex, which houses both the middle and high school, has clean, spacious classrooms, beautiful landscaping, and outdoor dining areas for students and impressive sports facilities.

The high school runs on a hybrid schedule; with combinations of different length class periods to accommodate a variety of schedules. In addition to core classes, Saluda High School students are able to choose from professional grade elective coursework. The small but in-depth elective programs offered include an agriculture department that operates a small farm and a greenhouse. Other elective courses include band, health occupations, ROTC, broadcast journalism and production, PE, and business education classes.

Many professional development opportunities exist in the school district. Faculty and staff are very supportive of their colleagues, as is the administration. Student demographics include approximately 43% African American students; 43% Caucasian students, and 14% Hispanic students.

Saluda County Schools is located in beautiful, rural South Carolina, just a couple of hours from the coast and two hours from the amazing Blue Ridge Mountains. Saluda offers the friendly, easy living comforts of a small town, but is only a short drive from “Famously Hot” Columbia, historic Augusta, GA, and Newberry’s Opera House and Downtown.

There are five schools in Saluda County Schools, including one high school, one middle school, and three primary and elementary schools. Saluda County Schools offers its educators support, feedback and collegiality in a positive school climate. Quality professional development and community support are also hallmarks of our district.
