Occupational Safety and Health Administration - OSHA

• OSHA is a branch of the Department of Labor that issues and enforces safety regulations in the workplace. According to OSHA, workers have the right to a safe and healthy workplace. The employer is responsible for providing a safe workplace. Following we are going to talk about worker’s rights.

• OSHA es una rama del Departamento de Trabajo la cual promulga y hace cumplir regulaciones de seguridad en el sitio de trabajo. De acuerdo a OSHA, los trabajadores tienen el derecho a un sitio de trabajo saludable y seguro. El empleador es responsable de proveer un sitio de trabajo seguro. ¿Cuáles son algunos ejemplos de pesticidas que a lo mejor usted utiliza en su hogar o trabajo?

What are some examples of pesticides that you might use at home or work?

¿Dónde Se Encuentran los Pesticidas? ¿Cómo Se Aplican? / Where do you find pesticides? How are they applied?

Los pesticidas se aplican como líquidos o aerosoles, en polvos o gránulos, y como gases.

Si usted trabaja en los campos, las huertas, y/o los invernaderos usted puede estar en contacto con los pesticidas, muchas veces sin saberlo.

Pesticides are applied as liquids or sprays, as powders or granules, and as gases.

If you work in fields, orchards, and greenhouses you can come into contact with pesticides, often without realizing it.

Residuos de los Pesticidas/ Pesticide Residues

Después de que los pesticidas se utilizan en los campos, las huertas, y/o los invernaderos queda un poquito del pesticida que le llaman un “residuo”.

No siempre se puede ver u oler un residuo.

Por esta razón los residuos de los pesticidas son peligrosos - usted no siempre sabe que están allí.

After pesticides are used in the fields, orchards, and greenhouses they leave behind something called a residue.

You can’t always see or smell a residue.

This is why pesticide residues are dangerous - you don’t always know that they are there.

Los residuos de los pesticidas pueden acumularse en su ropa y cuerpo mientras trabaja, y usted puede llevarse a estos residuos a casa sin saberlo.

Pesticide residues can get on your clothes and body as you work, and you can take these residues home with you without even knowing it.

Rutas de Exposición / Routes of Exposure

Los pesticidas pueden entrar a su cuerpo a través de:

Su boca comiendo las frutas y verduras con residuos de pesticidas.

Su nariz respirando los residuos de los pesticidas.

Pesticides can get into your body through:

Your mouth by eating fruits and vegetables with pesticide residues on them.

Your nose by breathing the pesticide residues.

Fields where pesticides has been applied should have signs informing about possible restrictions.

REI Restricted Entry Interval is usually hours (included in label)

PHI Pre Harvest Interval usually expressed in days (depends on pesticide and crop)

R#: Insecticide Resistance Action Committee Code Number Herbicide Rotation Guide Fungicide Resistance Action Committee Code Number

Hazards Control(In order of effectiveness)

First - Elimination or substitution Engineering controls

Changing a machine or work environment Work practices

Changing how or when the job is done Administrative controls

Training on how to perform tasks, breaks, shifts Last line of control: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

It’s the least protective
