HISTORY OF KETCHIK AN HISTORY OF KETCHIK AN

For hundreds of years native Alaskans fished the waters of what is now Ketchikan, Alaska. They set up

camp at the mouth of what the Tlingit Indians called, Kich-xaan: meaning “wings of the eagle.” Fishing

scouts from Canada and America heard legendary tales of the Salmon catches and made their way

here in 1885.

The city of Ketchikan formally began in 1885 when Mike Martin bought 160 acres from Chief Kyan. By

the mid-1890s, young Alaskan entrepreneurs had built a wharf in deep water. In the late 1890s, nearby

gold and copper discoveries briefly brought activity to Ketchikan as a mining supply center. As the

fishing industry grew the first cannery opened its doors in 1886 near the mouth of Ketchikan Creek.

Four more were built by 1912. Now, over a century later, Ketchikan is known as the “Salmon Capital of

the World.”

In 1900, the first head count found 800 residents in Alaska’s “First City” north of the Puget Sound. By

1936, seven canneries were in operation, producing 1.5 million cases of salmon a year. As the Salmon

industry flourished, the need for lumber spawned a new boom industry in the area. The Ketchikan

Spruce Mills opened in 1903, which operated for over 70 years. Spruce was in high demand during

World War II, and Ketchikan became a supply center for area logging. The vibrant growth of the

community, one dominated by male laborers, gave Ketchikan a measure of infamy during the first half

of the 20th century for an infamous red-light district known as Creek Street, with brothels aligned on

either side of the creek.

With a current population of almost 15,000 residents, Ketchikan is Alaska’s fifth largest city. Today

Ketchikan remains a Salmon industry leader but also enjoys a thriving tourism economy. Ketchikan is

home to the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles. Great restaurants, quaint galleries and

ample shopping make Ketchikan one of the most visited and enjoyed cruise ports in North America.

INTERESTING FACTS INTERESTING FACTS

1. For hundreds of years native Alaskans fished the waters at the mouth of what the Tlingit Indians

called, Kich-xaan: meaning “wings of the eagle.” That is how Ketchikan got its name.

2. The city of Ketchikan began in 1885 when Mike Martin bought 160 acres from Chief Kyan. The first

cannery opened in 1886 near the mouth of Ketchikan Creek and four more were built by 1912.

3. Ketchikan is famous for its salmon, its lumber and its totem poles. But in the 1950s, because of the

vibrant growth of a community dominated by male laborers, Ketchikan became famous for its

legendary red-light district known as Creek Street, with brothels aligned on either side of the creek.

4. The Salmon Falls Resort was originally built as a homestead in 1980. During construction the

home was lost to a fire caused by a lightning strike. The entire structure was lost. The home was

sold to Mr. Steve Seley, an Alaskan helicopter pilot, who built what is now the main lodge and

two lodging buildings for the purposes of a developing private residences. He liked the property

because he could land his helicopter on it.

5. Even though it’s one of the most prolific areas for lumber, the resort is made of a Ponderosa Pine

found in Utah mountains. The original owner did not want to wait for the local lumberman to

supply his wood so he had the Ponderosa Pine trucked in.

6. Up until the 1980s, all of the lodge’s electricity was generated by a water wheel at the falls.

7. The waters off Salmon Falls dock are the best prawn pot areas in the nation.

8. We have two Harbor Seals with distinctive spotted coats; and we have Otters, Sea Otters and

Mink on our property.

9. Salmon Falls Resort is located in the middle of a designated rainforest. The area receives over 12

feet of rain each year. (Average of 141.16 inches per year.)

10. There are 5 types of Salmon that can be caught while fishing at Salmon Falls Resort:

· Coho Salmon

· Chinook Salmon

· Pink Salmon

· Chum Salmon

· Sockeye Salmon

FIRE SAFETY

For your safety and protection, please take a moment to review the following regarding fire safety. We

hope that these procedures will contribute to your comfort and well-being during your stay.

• Open exit doors and examine the staircase layout

• Locate the nearest fire extinguisher

When you get into your room

• Study the layout of your room. Determine anything that might help or hinder emergency exiting

• Always keep your room key handy near your bed

• Read the posted Evacuation Plan

• IN CASE OF FIRE, DO NOT USE ELEVATORS

If you discover fire or smoke near or inside your room

• Call (911) give them your location and room number then call the hotel operator “0”

• Take your room key card; exit the room and close the door behind you

• Alert others in the area

• Walk to the nearest stairway (DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR) and exit the building

• If smoke is present, stay low.

If you are Ordered to Evacuate Your Room

• Exit with caution. Feel the door. If the door is NOT HOT, open it slightly and look in both

SAFETY OUTSIDE THE RESORT

The trails around Ketchikan offer superb opportunities for hiking, biking and walking. From the

rainforest beauty of Perseverance Trail, to the steep and stunning alpine terrain of Deer Mountain, the

scenery and opportunity to observe wildlife are unparalleled. Exploring the great outdoors doesn’t

stop because of an occasional shower. The breathtaking mountains around Ketchikan are softened by

the mist and are beautiful.

Common sense is the best tool for your day in the wilderness. Before you go, let someone know

where you are going! Before departing, leave a trip itinerary and estimated time of return with family

or friends. Also, bring your phone! Although service may by spotty, cell phone reception is available

in many areas on trails in Ketchikan.

Whether you are going out for a quick hike or an extended day trip, certain items should ALWAYS be

packed for safety.

Make sure you have:

• Matches/Lighter

• Drinking water and food

• Local maps

• Rain gear

• Knife/Multi-tool

• Flashlight/Headlamp

• First Aid Kit

• Compass and Map/Smartphone with Global Positioning System (GPS)

• Signaling device (e.g. flashlight, whistle, flares)

Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad

The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad can be contacted at (907) 225-9010. They have Satellite

Personal Tracker locators available for use when hiking long distances. This tool allows you to notify

the rescue squad of your position and status throughout your hike.

Wild Weather Warning

Ketchikan averages about 165 inches of rainfall each year. The weather in Alaska can be unpredictable,

with varying conditions mile to mile. Be sure to check the weather forecasts before leaving the Resort

and always prepare for a variety of weather conditions. If you plan on hiking to areas of higher

elevation, heavy fog and rain often decrease visibility and may create dangerous hiking conditions.

WILDLIFE & BEAR SAFETY

When hiking in the Ketchikan area, you are traveling in bear country. Revillagigedo Island is home to a

wide variety of wildlife and a large population of black bears. Follow the etiquette below when

travelling in bear country as these animals are extremely powerful and may be unpredictable.

• Travel in groups whenever possible or make noise when traveling alone.

• If you encounter a wild animal or a bear, make your presence known through verbal

communication as well as hand motions.

• Slowly back away from the bear while maintaining eye contact. NEVER RUN from an approaching

bear as this may prompt a predatory response.

• In mid to late summer, during the Pacific salmon spawn, bears congregate along streams and

rivers. Take caution when traveling along these waterways, as the running water may mask your

approach and lead to close encounters.
