Should you be elected, what are three specific areas you’d like to change, address,
improve or further research, and how specifically would you go about it?:
1. Continuing to address the financial security and stability of our district is one goal. I
recently worked diligently with our levy committee to present our needs for roof
replacement which was explained to the community so that a 2.75 mill levy for five years
passed and those repairs are now under way. Our first project was completed this summer
and we will begin on the second phase, which will include beginning roof replacement (or
partial replacement) on each of the other three buildings next spring.
I support funding our district in a consistent manner without increasing property taxes. The
school district practices economizing measures in all areas. Textbooks, technology and
other resources and materials continue to be carefully purchased to continue to provide our
kids with the first class education for which West Geauga is known.
2. Addressing the enrollment changes that West Geauga is experiencing is another need.
Enrollment determines the size of classes, size of buildings, courses offered, staffing, and
building configurations. It causes us to study our needs carefully and move forward
prudently. For instance, we can offer a more complete choice of AP and honor classes
when enrollment is “open” to students who help insure that we have minimum enrollment
for these special classes.
3. I would like our district to further research ways in which our students compete
academically. As I write this, it has been announced that West Geauga High School has
been recognized as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School, “a high school where students
perform at very high levels.” The 2013 graduating senior profile showed 67% of our grads
entering four-year colleges and 17% entering two-year programs and/or military. I would
like to see us find ways to ensure the other 15% grow in their accomplishments.
Whether for past accomplishments or future goals, why should voters elect you?
I am the only candidate or Board member who has classroom experience as a teacher and
professional educator. I have the history and the foresight to make decisions that enhance our
schools with high academic ratings, financial stability, and facility upkeep funding, all at a time of
declining enrollment. I would be pleased to continue to serve the community and the students of
West Geauga.
