Regulations & ProceduresWhen you register as a student you are agreeing to abide by the University’s regulations and procedures. These are designed to guarantee the quality of our teaching, protect your rights as a student and ensure that we assess all student work fairly.
Academic Misconduct, Including PlagiarismThe University has a strict policy on academic misconduct, and the most common form of this is plagiarism. Plagiarism involves taking the work of another person or source and using it as if it were your own. This includes written work, ideas, musical compositions, computer programs, laboratory or survey results, diagrams, graphs, drawings and designs.
The use of unfair means is regarded as a serious offence within the University’s Code of Conduct for Students. Students found guilty will lose academic credits, be suspended or even expelled from the University.
Sometimes students may plagiarise unintentionally by searching for information on the Internet and then cutting and pasting the material into their own assignment. In some educational establishments outside the UK this may be accepted as normal practice, but in UK institutions doing this without crediting (referencing) the original source is regarded as plagiarism. The University does not take into account whether or not you did it on purpose.
The University has produced a set of guidelines about plagiarism, explaining what it is and how you can avoid plagiarising information: www.als.salford.ac.uk/plagiarism
There is also a useful support pack available which explains the importance of referencing your work and how to properly reference different sources of information using the Harvard system: www.als.salford.ac.uk/referencing
Code of Conduct The Code of Conduct for Students outlines the ways we expect students to behave towards staff and each other - with courtesy, respect and tolerance. The policy identifies types of behaviour considered unacceptable, where it may be offensive or aggressive towards another student or member of staff, disruptive of teaching and learning, dangerous or illegal.
The Code sets out the actions that the University might take in the case of misconduct. This can range from reprimand, fine or suspension, to expulsion from the university depending on the seriousness of the offence.
The University also has policies about harassment and bullying. If you feel you are a victim of harassment or bullying by another student or staff member, speak to your personal tutor, a Students’ Union Officer or report the incident to a member of staff at one of Student Life’s Advice Desks (iSite).
Complaints and AppealsThe University has separate policies allowing you to make a complaint about a service or individual and allowing you to appeal if you are unhappy with the conduct of the Board of Examiners:
The Academic Appeals Procedure sets out the circumstances under which you can challenge the decision of a Board of Examiners. You cannot appeal under this procedure simply because you are unhappy with the marks you were awarded. Rather, you must be able to show that there are grounds for appeal, for example that the Board of Examiners made an error when considering your marks, acted unfairly in making their decision or you experienced mitigating circumstances that you were unable to bring to the attention of the Board - for good reason - via a PMC claim at the appropriate time. There are set dates and deadlines for submitting Academic Appeals.
The Student Complaints Procedure sets out what to do if your complaint is about anything other than an assessment decision by a Board of Examiners.
Personal Mitigating Circumstances (PMCs)There may be a very good reason why you have been unable to complete a piece of work or assessment on time or to the required standard, and the University does not want to unfairly disadvantage you if this is the case. The Personal Mitigating Circumstances Procedure allows you to put forward the case that circumstances beyond your control have prevented you from completing your work to the best of your ability.
The Board of Examiners will not award you extra marks if a PMC claim is accepted. However, depending on what has been claimed for, the Board of Examiners may remove late penalties or offer you another chance to undertake the assessment in the next assessment period.
ICT and Library Use
Students are expected to use the library and computing facilities appropriately. This includes respect for library resources and other library users, returning borrowed materials on time and in good condition and not allowing other people to use your ID card or log on details. You must not download illegal or offensive material, use file sharing software to upload or download copyrighted music, etc, make or distribute illegal copies of software, disseminate spam or unintentionally spread computer viruses.
Find Out MoreThis is a just a brief overview of some of our key policies and procedures. For more details see www.salford.ac.uk/getready/rules
To read the University’s official policy documents please refer to http://policies.salford.ac.uk/
You can speak to your Personal Tutor if you have questions about any of the University’s policies and procedures.
You can arrange to see a Student Life Adviser by visiting one of the iSite Advice Desks in University House, Allerton Building and Adelphi Building. Tel: 0161 295 0023
Alternatively, the Students’ Union Advice Centre in University House can give you independent and confidential advice about Academic Appeals, PMCs, complaints and disciplinary matters.
Telephone: 0161 736 7811 Email: [email protected]
Travel Around Campus
Free Campus Bus ServiceThe best and safest way to travel around campus is on the free campus bus service which runs between all the main campus buildings, accommodation sites and car parks every 30 minutes between 8.15am-11.15pm during term time. It is recommended that you take advantage of this service when travelling around the campus, especially at night and when you’re travelling alone.
The campus bus service is free to use as long as you show your University ID or student NUS card to the driver. Details of timetables and bus stops are available on the Campuswatch website: www.campuswatch.salford.ac.uk/free_bus
Campus bus timetables are also available from reception desks around campus.
If you have any questions about the campus bus service or public transport access to the University, please contact the helpline on 0161 295 2458 or 0161 295 4572.
