ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)The ESL program is designed for students who wish to improve their English skills and to prepare for study in the bachelor’s or master’s programs. Courses include grammar, writing, reading, and conversational English. The ESL sessions start in the fall, spring and summer semesters. VIKING GLOBAL BRIDGE The Viking Global Bridge program provides students with intensive language practice, and introduction to academic expectations in U.S. undergraduate programs, cultural immersion and the opportunity to take courses in their major of interest. UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONTo apply to over 30 majors in the bachelor’s degree program, please go to salemstate.edu/admissions.

First Year International Applicant Requirements1. Completed application and $40 application fee

2. Official high school/secondary transcript(s) or diploma/graduation certificate which must be in English or professionally translated. The translation must include a list of courses completed and the grades received.

3. Official test score results for SAT. Please visit collegeboard.org for upcoming test dates. If you have a high school/secondary school GPA of 3.0/B/90 or higher, the SAT is not required. If you live in a country that does not offer the SATs, you can be exempt from the SAT requirement (e.g. China or Cuba).

4. Proof of English proficiency may be met by one of the following:

a. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); minimum scores: 500 (written) or 61 (Internet-based)

b. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) passing score of 5.5

c. Students from English speaking countries, whose first language is English, are exempt from the TOEFL and/or IELTS

d. If you completed high school/secondary school in English you may be exempt from the TOEFL and/or IELTS

e. If you have an SAT Critical Reading score of 450 or higher you will be exempt from the TOEFL and/or IELTS

f. If you have successfully completed (grade of B or better) an English Writing I or II course at an accredited college in the United States

Transfer International Applicant Requirements: 1. Completed application and $40 application fee

2. All original transcripts/credentials from institutions outside of the United States must have an approved agency’s evaluation of courses, grades, academic degrees, and grade point averages. All original transcripts/credentials from overseas institutions must be in English or professionally translated into English; and evaluated by a professional evaluation service (such as: The Center for Educational Documentation (cedevaluations.com) or World Education Services (wes.org)). It usually takes at least three weeks for one of these services to evaluate your transcript. Please note: to transfer international course work to Salem State University, official course/subject description or syllabi in English must be submitted (this is not required for the admissions process).

3. An official high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores are required if you have less than 12 college credits, a GPA of less than 2.5 and have been out of high school for three years or less.

GRADUATE ADMISSIONThe School of Graduate Studies offers programs in business, clinical trial management, counseling, criminal justice, education, English, GIS, higher education, history, I/O psychology, mathematics, nursing, occupational therapy, social work, and teaching English to speakers of other languages. TUITION AND FEESUndergraduate day students full-time: $7,754 per semester (12–18 credits/semester)

Graduate students: $4,257 per semester (9 credits/semester)

ESL program: $2,266 for the 12-week-program Viking Bridge program: Two-semester-program $6,950

Three-semester-program: $8,950

Additional costs: on campus room and board (food) starts at $5,630 per semester

HOUSINGSalem State has six residence halls housing over 2,500 undergraduate students. To learn about living on campus and costs associated with that, please visit salemstate.edu/residencelife. (Family housing on campus is not available.)

PASSPORTS AND VISASBefore you leave home, you must obtain a passport from your government and a visa from the United States Consulate in your home country. In order to obtain a visa, you must present to the U.S. Consulate a Certificate of Eligibility (either form I-20A-B or form DS 2019) issued by the Center for International Education (CIE) after you have been admitted into Salem State.

HEALTH INSURANCEUnder Massachusetts state law, all Salem State students registered for three-quarter status or more must enroll in the university-sponsored insurance plan. For more information, visit salemstate.edu/chs.

FINANCIAL AIDStudents from foreign nations are expected to provide all the funds necessary for a four-year program. Most federal financial aid is not available to those who are not citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Arrangements for aid should be made before you arrive in the United States. Students with U.S. citizenship or residency status can apply for financial aid.
