Welcome to Salem Film Fest 2010. Entering its third year, the Salem Film Fest is quickly emerging as a leading documen-tary fi lm festival, showcasing a rich and diverse collection of the year’s best work from all over the world.

This year, we are honored to have featured fi lmmaker Les Blank join us as we continue to present and salute the best in independent documentary fi lm.

The festival fi nds its spirit in Salem’s history as the fi rst great international city in America—establishing trade with the Far East and fl ooding this country with art, story, and culture from every continent. At this moment of unprecedented promise—and unprecedented danger—documentary fi lm can help us form a clearer vision of our commonalities as the human family, and an understanding of how to approach an uncertain future together.

Because the Salem Film Fest focuses on well told stories with strong technical elements and interesting visual ap-proaches, each fi lm screened over the week-long schedule represents an immersive aesthetic experience, an opportu-nity to glimpse the world with fresh eyes, and leave changed as a result. About half of our fi lms will have a discussion with the fi lmmaker.

TheFestivalWhy do documentary fi lmmakers even bother? A fi lm takes years of humbling work: begging for funds; legal details; miserable shooting conditions; months of sleepless nights; hundreds of hours of footage that never stop repeating in your head. By the time a fi lm is fi nished you have hurdled a thousand obstacles, submitted yourself to all forms of crippling criticism and are usually dead broke. Then the fi lm festivals beckon: countless more hours submitting; thousands more in expenses; the angst of searching for a fair distribution deal.

After all those years and anxieties you promise yourself, “Never again!” Then you remember the human encounters; the explorations; the creative sparks; the people whose stories you have cradled and nurtured; the message you were privi-leged to project to the world; the electric feedback at a great screening.

We hope you’ll lose yourself in the stories that fl icker on the CinemaSalem screen but when the lights come up you’ll consider what these artists might have waded through to get here. FEATURED FILMMAKER: LES BLANK

Salem Film Fest is pleased to have Les Blank in attendance as an honored guest and participant. Les is the essence of independent documentary, best known for his series of intimate fi lms about music and passionate people, including THE BLUES ACCORDING TO LIGHTNIN’ HOPKINS, ALWAYS FOR PLEASURE and SPROUT WINGS AND FLY.

Among Les’s numerous awards are the British Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary for BURDEN OF DREAMS, which also received the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1982. IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO BEER? won the Grand Prize at the 1985 Melbourne Film Festival and a special Jury Award at Sundance.

In 1990, Les received the American Film Institute’s Maya Deren Award for outstanding lifetime achievement as an independent fi lmmaker. With GARLIC IS AS GOOD AS 10 MOTHERS andCHULAS FRONTERAS both being selected by the U.S. Library of Congress for inclusion in The National Film Registry, Les became one of only three documentary fi lmmakers to be honored with two fi lms on this list.

Vincent Canby of the New York Times once wrote that Les Blank “is a master of movies about the American idiom...one of our most original fi lmmakers.”

The great Texas bluesman Lightnin’ Hopkins is captured brilliantly by Les Blank in this deeply moving 1969 fi lm which reveals Lightnin’s inspiration and features a generous helping of classic blues. It includes performances at an outdoor barbeque and a black rodeo; and a visit to Lightnin’s boyhood town of Centerville, Texas. The rich 16mm photography, calm camera moves and editing, as well as the unobtrusive fi lmmaking would become signatures of Les Blank and infl uence generations of documentary makers. This powerful portrait is among Les’s masterworks and the one he calls his favorite.

His Golden Horse Temple is orphanage, school and clinic—a haven for the children of the region, who see him as a shaman, father fi gure and coach. BUILDING 173 in downtown Shanghai has witnessed three quarters of a century of the most dramatic upheaval in modern Chinese history. The stories of seven families including the son of a gangster; a Western-educated diplomat; an opera star; a worker and a high standing communist party cadre allow us to be a fi rst-hand witness to life, death and survival and shed new light on China’s turbulent recent history. For nearly fi ve years, German fi lmmaker Werner Herzog desperately tried to complete one of his most ambitious and diffi cult fi lms, FITZCARRALDO, the story of one man’s attempt to build an opera house in the Amazon jungle. Les Blank captured the unfolding of this production, made more perilous by Herzog’s determination to shoot the most daunting scenes without models or special effects, including a sequence requiring hundreds of native Indians to pull a full-size, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain. This extraordinary document of the fi lmmaking process is a unique look into the obsession of one of cinema’s most fearless directors. Shot during a road trip in the Sahara desert of Mali, Kiahkeya performers and a camera team lived with the nomadic Tuareg/Kel Tamashek tribes and visited Tuareg Festivals. The fi lm captures the people in their element, investigating their music, their dance, their survival skills and the rituals that the Tuareg carry within to keep their culture and heritage alive. Les Blank’s lip-smacking foray into the history, consumption, cultivation and culinary/curative powers of the stinking rose. The SF Chronicle called this paean to garlic, “a joyous, nose-tweaking, ear-tingling, mouth-watering tribute to a Life Force” This lovingly photographed 1980 documentary is an odyssey of garlic feasts alternated with uniquely individual interviews of garlic afi cionados. Not only does the fi lm promote garlic as our fi rst line of defense against all forms of blandness; it also titillates. Les Blank shows again that he knows how to have a good time and share it on fi lm.

At Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 are taught that it’s OK to sweat like a pig, scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with complete and utter abandon, and that “it is 100% okay to be exactly who you are.” The girls have a week to select a band, an instrument they may have never played before, and write a song. In between, they are taught by indie rock chicks such as Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney various lessons of empowerment from self-defense to anger management. At the end of the week, all the bands perform a concert for over 700 people. The fi lm follows several campers: Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed by death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth addiction, homelessness and gang activity; and Amelia, an eight-year-old who writes experimental rock songs about her dog Pipi. What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary.

GOOD FORTUNE explores how international efforts to alleviate poverty in Africa may be undermining the communities they aim to benefi t. On the outskirts of Nairobi, Silva’s home is being demolished as part of a United Nations slum-upgrading project. In the countryside, Jackson’s farm is being fl ooded by an American investor who hopes to create a multi-million dollar rice farm. GOOD FORTUNE examines the real-world impact of international aid and suggests that the answers for Africa lie in the resilience of its people.

For the past three years, the Dutch journalist Bernice Notenboom has focused on reporting from the world’s climate change hot spots—the Arctic and Antarctic—as well as getting climate change discussed in schools. This year her focus is the effects of climate change in the Himalayas. Bernice leaves with her team for Nepal on a two-month expedition to document the threats affecting the cultures and natural environments in the Everest region. Eddie has always loved the spotlight—singing, acting and managing topless female rock bands but now runs a theatre for young people. That spotlight is now on Josephine as she fi nally gets her high school diploma.

For years the Eskimos of the Alaskan village of Shishmaref—just below the polar circle—have been living a nightmare: their island is slowly being swallowed by the ocean. With polar caps starting to melt, the sea now becomes frozen over much later in the year. Winter storms terrorize the island much longer, causing enormous coastline damage. Predictions are that Shishmaref will disappear in less then ten years. The Inupiaq are facing a forced move to the mainland, changing life in this isolated community and separating them from the souls of their ancestors who are buried on the island. By observing three families during their daily life, the impact of global warming becomes very palpable.

The pressures of daily living and gendered responsibilities begin to eat away at the foundation of the Mamachas, and Carmen Rosa increasingly shoulders more of the work burden. Her day job as a street vendor begins to suffer and her attention to her family dwindles, until one day her husband issues her a fi rm ultimatum: wrestling or your family.

Francisca Halamajowa was a Polish-Catholic woman who rescued 15 Jews during the Holocaust by passing herself off as a Nazi sympathizer. More than 6,000 Jews once lived in Sokal, a small town in Eastern Poland. By the end of the war, only about 30 had survived, most of them rescued by Halamajowa. For close to two years, Francisca hid and fed her Jewish acquaintances in her tiny home and barn, right under the noses of German troops. In the war’s fi nal months, she provided shelter to a German soldier who had defected—an act that nearly cost her life. Now several of those survivors reconnect on a trip back to Halamajowa’s home.
