There is no longer a relationship with him, whether that relationship was good or bad. Second, this interim time is a time where there are no boundaries as to what you can or will consider. It is an opportunity to look at your congregation’s identity without any constraints. It is a time when we can ask significant questions, such as “Why do you …?” or “What business is Salem in and how’s it going?” Questions like, “Who are we as the people of God in this place and time?” and “What is our appropriate ministry now and in the future?” and “What future do we seek?” Third, this is a time for us to look at barriers or potential barriers in Salem’s ministry and whether to address them. Every congregation has issues that need to be addressed during an interim time. Some of these issues are problems that have solutions that can be applied. Some of these issues are ongoing concerns that do not have solutions and will remain issues. My role in all of this is twofold. First, I will serve as your temporary pastor, which means that I will do all the jobs that a regular (“settled”) pastor does, like lead worship, pastoral care, committee participation, sacraments, so that you can continue your ministry during this time of transition. Secondly, as your Intentional Interim Pastor, my specific role is to walk alongside you, listen to you and to God, and ask questions that help you see where God is in your communal life, and where God is calling you next. This means that my task is to help you, to whatever extent possible, work through issues so as to remove barriers to ministry, so that you can be as healthy as possible when you move to the next phase of your ministry and life with your next “settled” pastor. This is an exciting time. Yes, it may include anxiety and stress, and it will mean hard work. But it is a holy time, a time to listen to each other and to God so we can see what God has in store for you in this next part of your journey with different pastoral leadership. I am blessed to walk through this interim time with you. Peace, Pastor Cheryl

SUMMER 2014 WORSHIP TIMES

Traditional Worship – 8:15 a.m.

Contemporary Worship – 9:45 a.m.

From Pastor Cheryl

It is so good to finally be with you as your Intentional Interim Pastor! The past few weeks I have enjoyed attending your Bible studies and small group ministries. I am impressed by how the groups pray for each other, for members of Salem, and for those others for whom you are concerned.

So how will our time together look, and what will happen, and when will we get our “real” pastor? Hopefully, this article can address some of your questions.

First, this “interim time” is a time to focus on who Salem IS rather than what Salem OUGHT to be doing. The security systems that were in place with your prior pastor are now in question. There is no longer a relationship with him, whether that relationship was good or bad.

Second, this interim time is a time where there are no boundaries as to what you can or will consider. It is an opportunity to look at your congregation’s identity without any constraints. It is a time when we can ask significant questions, such as “Why do you …?” or “What business is Salem in and how’s it going?” Questions like, “Who are we as the people

of God in this place and time?” and “What is our appropriate ministry now and in the future?” and “What future do we seek?”

Third, this is a time for us to look at barriers or potential barriers in Salem’s ministry and whether to address them.

Life is sure busy! Our work lives, personal lives and

volunteer lives demand our time and attention.

With Summerfest coming up quickly, we add to the

list of things that we need to accomplish. When

you get to the bottom of one list, the next one

begins! At our last Social Ministry Governing Board

Meeting, our chair, Debbie MacKay, shared a

devotion from a section of her Bible called “Life

Lessons from Bible People.” God spoke directly to

me through Debbie that evening (why every

meeting at Salem MUST begin in God’s Word) and

they were words that I needed to hear.

She has based it on her three dogs and how

different their personalities are, just like us

humans! In the midst of our busy lives and

transition at Salem, they were profound words that

I needed to hear. Everything we approach in life,

just like the MacKay dogs, is dealt with in our

unique way. I would like to share some of these

life lessons them with you, praying that they will

touch your heart as it did mine.

Circumstances matter less than our

response to them – Joseph

Concentrating on our present challenges

and responsibilities is the best way to plan

for the future – Balaam

Although we may feel caught up in a chain

of events, we are still responsible for the

way we participate in those events –

Bathsheba

People under God’s direction can

accomplish impossible tasks – Esther

The busyness of serving God can become a

barrier to knowing Him personally – Mary

Opportunities to do good often happen to

us in the form of choices to be made –

Herod Antipas

Our inadequacies and inabilities should not

keep us from being available to God –

Timothy

In the midst of all the changes, challenges,

transitions, opportunities and experiences we

encounter, God is still in control. We have been

given this wonderful, incredible book, The Bible. It

directs us, encourages us and teaches us. We need

not fear what life sends our way, because God is

there with us. So whatever comes our way now or

in the future, we can face it with confidence. God

is with us and He has sent us many mentors and

witnesses that show us the way.

Congregation/Council President

Lynn Hansen

What an exciting time to be at Salem!

Summerfest is coming soon. There are lots of opportunities to sign up and serve.

Salem and Immanuel are each doing their own Confirmation education this year. Pastor Cheryl has some great ideas incorporating some of the components of FINK with some new opportunities.

Registration for the National Youth Gathering is approaching in September.

The Capital Appeal Team interviewed representatives from Mark Davy & Associates, Kairos, and The James Company. After narrowing the choice to two, they conducted another phone interview. The decision was made to hire Mark Davy again for the coming debt reduction campaign.

We will resume our fall worship schedule on September 7 with Traditional Worship at 8:15, Sunday School at 9:30, and Contemporary Worship at 10:45. This will give Pastor Cheryl and our Sunday School students a chance to get to know each other during the education hour.

The Transition Task Force will be formed and trained in August and September. This team has many important tasks before the Call Committee can be selected. Read more about the Transition Task Force in this issue of the Connection. Consider volunteering or nominating someone for this important Team. The Team is very active but serves for a relatively short time in the life of the congregation. There will be an information session after services on August 31 if you want to know more.

We are blessed to have Pastor Cheryl here as our interim pastor. She is eagerly tackling to tasks and getting to know our congregation.

We want to thank our Salem Lutheran Church family for remembering Marvin Schoenike, over the years, with your prayers, friendship and kind words. Special thanks to Greg for your encouragement, your hugs and for always being so supportive. Thank you, also, to Greg, Cheryl, Debbi and Becky for making Marv's funeral service special and personal. To the countless number of people that attended his service, sent cards and memorials or flowers, prepared the lunch (Kathy & Ken), served lunch or cleaned up after, to those that ushered or served communion… WE SAY THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS. Mary Jo Schoenike and family

THANK YOU TO CONTROL BOOTH VOLUNTEERS!

As staff members at Salem, the staffing of Control Booth volunteers is an ongoing concern. Kerri Sanderson, the booth volunteer who has been devoted to serving in that area for YEARS stepped down last winter after a move

Page 5: SALEM CONNECTION - Salem Lutheran Church Deerwood MN · 2019-09-01 · SALEM CONNECTION August 2014 Salem Lutheran Church 21276 Archibald Road PO Box 100 Deerwood MN 56444 ... Roger

to Baxter. Kerri and her parents, Jerry & Donna, remain members at Salem so we will continue to see them here. We sincerely thank Kerri for sharing her gifts in the Control Booth! You may have noticed others serving in the booth on Sunday mornings throughout the spring and summer months. I would like to give special thanks and recognition to Charlie Anderson for faithfully serving in the booth for several months now. Charlie never missed a Sunday when we needed him the most! Charlie will be a junior at CIHS this fall, so we are hoping to keep him on board in the booth for a while. Also, thanks to the following volunteers: Abby Smith, Noah Coughlin, Kyle Skeim, Lara Turnbloom, Mark Carlson, Mike Shermock, Al Schiffler, Bruce Swanson, Sarah Adams, Anna Swanson, Meriellen Pisarek. When I first met with Meriellen to "train" her in the booth, it was clear that she has great knowledge of technology and a servant's heart. Since that time last spring, she has moved on to train 3 additional volunteers as well as serving in the booth all summer long. Thank you, Meriellen! Meriellen has now agreed to serve as Control Booth Coordinator, a volunteer position. She will be working on training and scheduling of volunteers. MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED in the Control Booth. If you have been thinking about it, but haven't yet checked it out, now is the time to give the church office a call and set up your training. Debbi Carlson

Salem Lutheran Church, Thank you for all working together to have a VBS for local kids! You all did great. We had a wonderful time. Thanks again. Trisha, Braydon and Ely Thank you for a fantastic week! Thanks a million. To cafeteria ladies – you are a star. Cadence Wynn Thank you so much for your generous donation to LAPS this past month. We are so thankful for those who partner with us helping those in a crisis pregnancy. Blessings to you! Ginny Rogers, Executive Director

The Mustard Seed – Deb Selk, Manager

[email protected]

We have had a busy July. Celebrated our 5 year Anniversary on July 11th. Christmas in July was held on the 18th. Sales have been above average which is awesome. We are looking forward to Summerfest and our annual book Sale, where all books are 25¢. Actually we have a trailer full. We still look for new volunteers for the Mustard Seed and Salem West so if you or anyone you know are interested please let me know. Blessings, Deb

Jesus told them another parable. The Kingdom of

Heaven is like what happens when a farmer plants a

mustard seed in a field. Although it is the smallest of

seeds it grows larger than any other garden plant and

becomes a tree. Birds even come and rest on its branches.

EVENTS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

Transition Task Force

If you are interested and want more information about what working on the Transition Task Force entails, please come to a ½ hour informational meeting led by Pastor Cheryl on August 31. These meetings will be held after each worship service.

What Exactly is the "Transition Task

Force?"

The task of the Transition Task Force (TTF) is to help guide the congregation through the transition tasks necessary before a call committee is organized. This transition is a time for the

congregation to articulate who they are and where they believe God is directing their future as the People of God in their particular place. The specific tasks of the TTF will include:

A. Lead the congregation in the developmental work of the interim period and serve at the direction of the church Council in addressing mission/ministry needs essential to the work of the future Call Committee.

B. Work with the Interim Pastor on concerns and transition issues within the congregation during this interim time.

C. Conduct a detailed analysis (assessment, self-study) of the congregation's ministry within the congregation and to the community.

D. Help facilitate conversations within the congregation (i.e., cottage meetings, and one-on-ones), which will help identify issues and will help project goals for the future.

E. Report to the council and to the congregation, and help them look at priorities and establish goals for the future.

F. Assist the congregation in determining strategies to meet these goals.

G. Meet with the Call Committee when it is established and share all pertinent information gathered.

A Nomination Form for the Transition Task Force is included on page 16 of this newsletter.

The Heart of Christmas Dinner

This is something that I have wanted to try for some time, and when I asked Pastor Cheryl about it the first week she was here, she was right on board with it having already held pet blessings in her former parish. It was wonderful to see all the different people coming with all different size and colors of pets. Many THANKS to the 19 pet owners (with 18 dogs and 1 cat) who participated. I would also like to thank Pastor Cheryl, Greg Meyer, Noreen Steinbrecher, Chuck Lubowitz, Karla Peterson, Debbie MacKay, Becky MacKay, Bruce Swanson and Anna Swanson for their help. Animals truly are a wonderful part of God’s creation and provide an added dimension to life on this earth. In the blessing portion Pastor Cheryl read from Genesis 1:20-26 and from Psalm 104: “We have come together to acknowledge with gratitude the goodness of God in all creation and to seek God’s blessing on the animals that are our companions is life.”

News from Missionary

John Lunn

Greetings to my sponsoring churches! When I last wrote to you, I was on my way to my Home Assignment. It was a long trip. I arrived at my sister Jan's place in Minnesota on June 12th and drove north to Deerwood for two services on June 15th. Salem Lutheran is a beautiful church and they were about to start their Vacation Bible School. The program was “Weird Animals - Where Jesus' Love is One-of-a-Kind.” and there were animals all over the church! Okay – they were stuffed animals, but there were a lot of them. My youngest sister Melinda, her husband Steve, their daughter Kari, and her year old son Warrick came to worship so I got to spend some time with them. The next day I was on a plane to sunny southern California and my stay at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in San Bernardino where I spent mornings with the kids at Vacation Bible School. The first day we had some technical problems but after that I could show my video clips and the littlest children were able to connect with my work through scenes from “The Lion King.” One afternoon I got to visit Central City Lutheran Mission in San Bernardino, a social ministry to the poor and homeless and meet the man who runs it. Another day I had lunch with a women's group who are very supportive of my work. They served a lovely lunch with a white chocolate covered carrot cake candy that was amazing! My next stop was at Calvary Lutheran in Solana Beach CA where I stayed with a wonderful couple who have hosted me on two previous visits. I had a Saturday morning presentation for a small group and then lunch with a prospective volunteer with great overseas experience. On Sunday, I preached at two services and I talked about how Jesus' family values are very different than the family values so many politicians talk about. Jesus calls us to a much broader understanding of family, because it is not limited to those related to us by blood. Afterward, there was a nice celebration honoring the 32nd anniversary of their pastor's ordination.

Then I came back to Minnesota and stayed with my sister Susan for a couple of days while doing some medical visits. I got to see my brother-in-law Thomas, my niece Hilma, my nephew Justin, and a classmate from nursing school while I was there. Then I was off to Good Shepherd Lutheran in Cincinnati OH for the weekend. Good Shepherd kept me busy with VBS, a Saturday and three Sunday services and two forums! They were wonderful hosts and entertained and toured me well. I met the new senior pastor and she and I were both very surprised to learn that we not only both Yoopers (from the Upper Peninsula of MI) but also both from the same town - Wakefield! From Cincinnati, I drove to McLean VA to visit a good friend and her children and grandchildren. I hadn't met the eight year old granddaughter, or the two grandsons who are six and four and a half. Then I drove to Philadelphia to meet up with two seminary classmates who have congregations in New York City. We stayed at the seminary in Philadelphia and spent most of our time together eating and talking. From there, I drove to Charlottesville VA to see an old friend from my very first mission in Sells AZ. It was a week of driving and visiting and eating and it was good. My next stop was in Zanesville OH and St. John's Lutheran. Two services and a presentation. I learned a lot about Zanesville and that congregation in a short visit. From Zanesville, I went back to my sister Jan's and we got to visit our new great-nephews who were almost two weeks old. They were born three months early and are very tiny, but they are perfectly made and they are doing well in the NICU. Then I was the special speaker at the WELCA meeting at Zion Lutheran, my dad's old church. Zion always welcomes me warmly, but the women especially make me feel like I am at home. Finally, I drove to Wakefield MI where I was born. I asked if I could come and preach there and their pastor said I could. I was there Saturday evening and then I drove to Marquette MI and Messiah Lutheran for Sunday morning. Met a number of people who knew my parents and remembered them fondly. I even made the local news (print and TV) - “local boy returns from afar.”

Now I am off to Chicago for meetings, time at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and United Evangelical Lutheran in Rockford followed by the Summer Missionary Conference. Please keep your traveling missionary friend in your prayers and I will continue to pray for my generous supporters. Peace, John

Page 15: SALEM CONNECTION - Salem Lutheran Church Deerwood MN · 2019-09-01 · SALEM CONNECTION August 2014 Salem Lutheran Church 21276 Archibald Road PO Box 100 Deerwood MN 56444 ... Roger

There is a lengthy list of volunteers that will help out any time the need is there. The recent Time & Talent Survey produced additional names for the Facilities Coordinator to contact when help is needed with mowing, windows, yard work, etc, so Glen will be encouraged to ask for help when necessary.

The Facilities Team does and will continue to help anytime there is extra work. Scheduling work days for the congregation is also helpful.

Members who occasionally use the church leave it as they found it, so there isn't additional work for the Facilities Coordinator as a rule.

The Facilities Coordinator is paid for all of the hours he works.

Salem's Wedding Policy provides for cleaning fees paid to the Facilities Coordinator. Although, there has not been a wedding at Salem for quite some time.

The occasional concerts or use of the Facility by local Scout troops is positive outreach by the congregation.

The Council will look at the Facility Use Policy to determine possible needed updates, such as a deposit required for all use of the church.

The meeting was adjourned and closed with The Lord's Prayer. NEXT COUNCIL MEETING: Thursday, August 21, 2014, 5:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Deborah Carlson

SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH – ELCA Nomination Form

Members and Friends of Salem, At its July 17, 2014 meeting, the Church Council authorized the formation of a Transition Task Force (TTF). The Transition Task Force is NOT a Call Committee. The TTF guides developmental work which ends in a written report that is given to the Call Committee when it is formed to begin the search for new long-term pastoral leadership. Experience and research in congregations experiencing pastoral leadership transition has shown consistently that congregations are wise to intentionally ready themselves to receive new leadership. Under the guidance of Intentional Interim Pastor Cheryl Fleckenstein, the TTF, an arm of the Council, will focus on staffing needs, mission/vision, and self-study. Within these three focus areas, the full life and ministry of the congregation will be examined as appropriate in order to provide the future Call Committee with the most comprehensive and compelling portfolio for the work it will eventually be doing as its part of the overall call process. In the meantime, the Church Council seeks names of members who might serve on the Transition Task Force. Copies of the TTF team member responsibilities are listed on the back of this sheet. The Council invites you to use the form below to nominate either yourself or someone else in the congregation to be considered for service on this important Task Force. The TTF will include Salem members plus a chairperson (to be designated by the Council), a recording secretary, and Interim Pastor Cheryl Fleckenstein. Of the TTF members, there will be three teams with each of them addressing either self-study, staffing needs, or Salem’s vision for mission. Our goal is that the TTF members not include current church council or staff members or their spouses.

I, ___________________________ nominate for Transition Task Force membership: Name: _______________________________________________ Phone: __________________ I have (___) do not have (___) the permission of my nominee to submit her/his name. (You may nominate yourself.) I believe that my nominee would serve Salem well as a TTF member because:

(If you wish to nominate more than one person, please use a separate form for each name. Additional Forms are available in the church office. Thank you! Please submit your nominee form to the church office on or before September 15, 2014.
