MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: RYAN McMULLIN

Hi, my name is Ryan McMullin. I began my fitness journey in March of 2016. I started working

out in desperation for relief from back pain. In 2004, I injured my back. I tried everything from

medication, to steroid shots and physical therapy, water therapy, and even a 10-year battle with alcohol

to numb the pain. I felt like nothing would ever work and I would be in pain forever. A good friend

suggested working out, at first I laughed but decided what could it hurt.

I started working out with a group of about four guys and we would do circuits of one muscle

group a day, five days a week. When this began I didn’t think I was going to make it very far. My muscles

would hurt so bad sometimes I couldn’t even sleep. A month went by and I was religiously attending the

gym hitting all muscle groups and running a mile or more a day. At this point, I was hooked. I started to

look up new workouts and try new stuff. If I missed a day I would try to make it up by working out

harder. In six months’ time I had went from 277 lbs. to 217 pounds by mostly converting fat to muscle.

After about six months, most of the guys I initially worked out with were working out on a different

schedule. I started working out solo with my own routines since I couldn’t rely on them anymore for

plans. I noticed I was gaining quite a bit more strength. It was then that I thought I should do something

with this so I began searching for sports I could compete in. I found strongman. I remember watching it

on T.V, as a kid, but never thought I could do something like that. To my surprise it is a great amateur

sport. Everyone is welcoming and picking up heavy stuff just seemed natural and fun to me. My first

competition was not in a sanctioned league. It was just for fun in a town in Oklahoma, but first place did

pay $350 to the winner. I did well, but could not compare to some of the guys there that day.

Sadly, I am still chasing a 1st place win the best I have achieved is 3rd. The sport does have an

overwhelming amount of guys in my weight class who have been at it longer than I have, and some

participants are 10 years younger. That can make competitions difficult, but does not discourage me

from working hard at my own abilities and personal records.

I have since become a certified personal trainer. I want to help others that are interested in

losing weight, gaining strength, or possibly getting into power lifting or strongman. I am open to training

the right motivated individuals who want to make a

change. I normally workout around 3 pm Monday thru

Friday, and usually 10-11 on Sundays , if anyone wants

to come and talk to me about strength sports or join

me in a workout.
