"e Small Mechanisms of Being: An Evening with Poet Aimee NezhukumatathilTuesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m.Shirley Recital Hall, Salem Fine Arts CenterReception and book signing will follow event.

Aimee Nezhukumatathil is the author of three poetry collections: Lucky Fish, At the Drive-In Volcano (winner of the Balcones Prize) and Miracle Fruit (winner

of the Tupelo Press Prize, ForeWord magazine’s Book of the Year Award, the Global Filipino Award and a finalist for *e Glasgow Prize and the Asian American Literary Award). Lucky Fish “is fascinated with the small mechanisms of being, whether natural, personal, or imagined. Everything from eating eels in the Ozark mountains to the history of red dye finds a rich life in her poems. At times her lush settings and small stories are reminiscent of fairy tales (‘*e frog who wanted to see the sea was mostly disappointed’), while at others Nezhukumatathil speaks with resonance and fierceness: ‘*e center of my hands boiled/ with blossoms when we made a family. I would never flee that garden. I swear to/ you here and now: If I ever go missing, know that I am trying to come home.’ Even as the poems jump from the Philippines to India to New York, they still take their time, stopping to notice that ‘there is no mystery on water/ greater than the absence of rust,’ and to draw small but wonderful parallels: ‘I loved you dark & late. *e crocus havefound ways to push up & say this/ too.’” –Publisher’s WeeklySponsored by the Center for Women Writers.

Betti Pettinati-Longinotti Exhibit: “She-roes”February 9 - March 16*Mary Davis Holt Gallery, Salem Fine Arts CenterEmbracing the mission of the Guerilla Girls, a feminist art group fighting for the rights of women artists, past and present, this work seeks to celebrate the contributions of these “she-roes.” With an intention to re-inform the art canon, the faces of women artists over the centuries are re-presented. Many of these artists received a lack of recognition, surpassed by the hegemony of their male-dominated world. With influences as diverse as Hildegard von Bingen and Lee Krasner, new synergies are crafted from both opaque and transparent structures. *is exhibit explores mediums from paintings with oils to compositions in glass. Maternal metanarratives also pay tribute to this neglected “other-half.”

Miss Representation Film Viewing and DiscussionTuesday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. Hanes Auditorium, Salem Fine Arts Center

Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. It challenges the media’s limited and often

disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it di"cult for women to achieve leadership positions, and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem, build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective. *e documentary, written and directed by Jennifer Siebel, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Recommended for mature audiences. In addition to the viewing, Salem students will participate in activities as part of the Salem Signature Women’s Leadership program, made possible by a grant from BB&T, through the O"ce of the Dean of Students.

Images from the Otherworld: New Works byAmy Funderburk ExhibitMarch 30 - April 29*Mary Davis Holt Gallery, Salem Fine Arts CenterWinston-Salem artist Amy Funderburk depicts her extraordinary experiences at sacred sites in Ireland and Southern England, as well as imagery derived from meditation through these paintings and photographs. In these works, she explores the role of art, belief and the power of positive thinking on the healing process. A connecting theme that runs throughout the series is the cycle of creation and destruction, of death and rebirth, and the healing that lies between. Her artistic goal is to inspire viewers to feel as though they could walk into the sacred or inner landscape to personally experience each scene. To enhance this e!ect, some of the works in the exhibit will be displayed on custom wooden installation components to combine two-dimensional paintings with interactive elements in the third dimension.
