16TH ANNUAL ON PROPERTY PRODUCTIONSALE AT 1.00PM, FRIDAY 13TH FEBRUARY 2015
51 CHAROLAIS BULLS
14 CHAROLAIS HEIFERS (PTIC)

WELCOME TO OUR 2015 ANNUAL BULL AND FEMALE SALE.Whether you are a repeat client or new to our cattle we hope you enjoy the offering of powerful working age bulls and classic PTIC Charolais females. This carefully selected elite group of animals will add value to any commercial or stud operation.
With 2014 behind us it appears that patience has rewarded cattle producers. There has been some outstanding results in the weaner sales this year. Vendor returns have lifted up to 40c/kg or $120 to $150 per head on last year. It was fantastic to see the Richardson family’s Charolais / Angus cross steers top the 3,000 strong weaner sale at Colac fetching a whopping $970 per head. And the Kershaw family’s Charolais /Angus and Black Baldy 10-11 month old steers make $2.40per kg. All sired by Mt William Bulls.
We have invested heavily in our breeding programme in the past 12 months. Firstly by importing semen from the UK which comes from an exceptional sire Blelack Digger. Digger’s first Australian calves were born at Mt William last autumn. We then visited Palgrove in August and brought back a very impressive stud sire in Palgrove Hannibal.
Our investment in elite genetics is testament to our commitment to breeding the best Charolais cattle possible. We are passionate about our cattle and hope these investments will further propel our herd to produce bulls and females with commercial relevance and market focus. Genetics are forever becoming the crucial ingredient in the prices paid for progeny. We will continue to invest in our herd and invite you to invest in some Mt William genetics which we are confident will improve your returns.
I would like to pay tribute to three of our retired sires. Kadlunga Victor has arguably had the greatest impact on the Mt William herd in the past decade. Retired at 13 years of age; the bulk of his last sons will be offered in this year’s sale. Rosedale Boss and Palgrove Dover, who have also retired, left their mark on the Mt William herd and were both bulls with exceptionally quiet temperaments.
Our group of sale bulls this year speak for themselves. The ability of the
Charolais to convert feed efficiently is magnificent. We are still puzzled as to why more producers are not using Charolais as terminal sires. Maybe tradition plays a part but when you do the numbers you are consistently making $100 more per head on steers, not being discounted when selling heifers, getting substantially more for your mature cows and all this is done with cattle that are docile and great to work with. Like all good stories, eventually the message will spread.
For those in the know we are very pleased with the depth of our bulls and females on offer. They are representative of the past 45 years of breeding. There are some great Dover and Dash sons as well as progeny offered for the first time by Mt William Fergus and Freewheeler. The bulls are soft fleshy and easy doing with plenty of muscle, the key ingredient for a cross breeding operation.
Our PTIC heifers are an even group including the first Fergus and Freewheeler females offered and some classic Mt William style breeders. They are all in calf to Mt William Gifford who we are continually impressed with as he matures to full size.
We are all about learning and with the help of Nick Kentish held a low stress stock handling course at Mt William during the winter. The course was attended by members from other stud and commercial operations and everyone seemed to gain a great deal from the course. We worked with both cattle and sheep and would recommend it to anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of animal husbandry.
We wish all those in attendance good luck. And as always please contact us if you have any questions or require any further information on our breeding programme or the way we do things. We are only too happy to share knowledge and learn as much as we can from other producers.
Weight, eye muscle scan and fat data will be available on the field day on Monday 2 February 2015.
Special thanks to our stud advisor Bryce Galvin for all his continued support.
Anne, Sybil, Victoria, Matt & Rob.

Understanding BREEDPLAN
Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination and hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth.
Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.
200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny tak-en between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.
400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.
600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.
Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV.
Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability.
Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scro-tum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny.
Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days.
The Indexes are derived using BreedObject technology.
For more information on this technology, go to the BreedObject web site.
Domestic Supermarket Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differenc-es between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (self replacing herd run in a temperate environment) targeting grass-finished production for the domestic supermarket trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg at 12 months, for the Supermarket trade. There is some concern for ease of calving, but heifer joinings are assumed not to be involved. Daughters are retained for breeding.
Export Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (self re-placing herd run in a temperate environment) targeting the production of steers for the export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg at 29 months, for Export markets with no particular marbling requirement. Joinings are to mature cows with little risk of calv-ing difficulty (eg Bos Indicus cows). Daughters are retained for breeding.

OUR NEW AI SIRE BLELACK DIGGER2012 saw the Charolais world congress take place in the United Kingdom. Mt William had been on the lookout for a sire that could add volume and muscle without compromising on calving ease. On a farm in wales we found such a bull. Viewed at 5 years of age his frame and confirmation were excellent, as were his feet and impeccable disposition. He had the correct balance of power and mobility. The popularity of this bull has skyrocketed in the UK since we imported semen to Australia. Diggers Figures speak for themselves:Number 1 British Sire: Terminal Index and EMA.Number 2 British Sire: Replacement IndexTop 1%: Direct Calving Ease, Gestation Length, Birth Weight, 400 Day weight, 600 day weight, Milk, Carcase weight, Retail beef Yield.Digger progeny are making their presence felt in UK markets toping bull sales in Welshpool, Stirling and Perth.David Benson head of British Charolais society commented “of all the Bulls currently in the UK Blelack Digger would be most suitable for the Australian Marketplace’. Power combined with calving ease and excellent milking ability makes Dig-ger a complete package.Using Digger in our AI programme has so far been a great success. All calves were born unaided and were some of the heaviest calves at weaning last November. We are confident we have some cracking progeny.Mt William has a select number of Digger sons which will be available for sale in out 2016 sale. For further information google Blelack Digger or speak to Bryce or Rob.

Comments: Jervis is a medium maturing, deep, well-muscled, soft bull. He is smooth bodied, very easy doing, structurally correct and is very clean through the shoulders. He is typical of the Dash bulls, as you will see through the draft of bulls as he puts his trademark muscle and finishing ability in all his progeny
Comments: Jumbuck is another medium maturing, well muscled, long, deep bodied Dash bull. He has a great topline and displays excellent muscling, with a good carcase, impressive EMA, in a well balanced body.
Comments: John is a medium maturing powerfull bull with good length, excellent muscling and growth while maintaining a good finishing ability. He has good carcase attributes with exceptional growth and would be one of the thickest bulls you will find with that finishing ability. He is the first Fergus son to be offered and isn’t he a ripper.
