Salary Guide Ireland 2019
Sigmar Recruitment | Salary Guide 2016
1
In 2018 Ireland, once again, proved its resilience and attraction for investment in the face of increased global economic uncertainty. This presents a challenge for 2019/2020 as financial markets underperform and risk of global economic shocks increase. Yet, both international and indigenous businesses in Ireland are performing well and require talent to sustain growth. Ireland’s competitiveness and agility will be tested in 2019 but will be essential to sustain our strong performance in employment.
Ireland’s unemployment rate of 5.3% has certainly dramatically improved from near 16% in 2012. More people are working in Ireland than ever, which is very positive. The drive to get more business into the regions and outside the main cities is on-going and working. Pressure on housing relative to other major cities, may be overstated but it is in everyone’s interest to balance employment in regional areas.
Salary inflation has been increasing in specific areas (IT, legal/compliance, data security, life sciences, banking) and in many cases experienced double digit percentage increases. Ireland is still relatively attractive to mobile European talent, but there has been pressure on salaries because of unprecedented demand. Benefits are increasingly a consideration for applicants, particularly in
the technology world where flexible working is becoming the expected norm rather than a differentiating factor. There is no question that the employers who are winning “talent battles” are really looking at their employee experience and also their applicant experience more closely than ever.
Effective employer branding was a novelty a few years ago, but now essential in attracting top talent. The good news is that successful employer branding works and ensures salary inflation is not excessive and hiring new talent is controllable
Overall, 2019 looks likely to be an interesting year, but as long as we stay competitive and offer some flexibility, Ireland has every reason to believe we can continue to outperform other countries in the war for talent!

Top Tip For 2019
ACCOUNTANCY& FINANCE
The strength of the Irish economy has so far withstood the lingering threat of Brexit along with other potential external fears. This has afforded businesses within the industry the opportunity to grow and expand, creating jobs within the sector. We have seen vacancies at all levels being created, with the most significant increase appearing in the €50-60k bracket. Following the trend of 2018, multinational companies have continued to fuel the increase in salaries as competition for talent intensifies. The tech industry has also contributed to growth within the industry as multinational tech firms continue to expand, particularly in Dublin. We expect the accounting industry to continue to expand into 2019 as the Irish economy maintains its steady year on year growth.

Understand the factors influencing the economy and the financial services companies you are looking to work for. This is a typical question you may be asked in an interview with an financial services company.
• Regulatory reporting • Auditing• Financial analysis • Business partnering • People management
The financial services market has continued to expand in 2018. The Irish economy has played a part; however, it is BREXIT that has played the most significant role in job creation over the past 12 months with several large financial services companies growing their presence in Ireland, particularly within their regulatory and treasury teams.
Whilst many of the domestic banks and established financial services companies in Ireland have not significantly grown in 2018, the confidence in the jobs market has resulted in opportunities in these institutions as a higher degree of staff turnover has transpired.

Salaries in 2019
Salaries in the financial services sector have risen over the past 12 months with the increased competition for talent coming mainly from the new jobs being created by BREXIT. The most notable increases have been in the mid and upper mid-levels (€50-75k).
It is anticipated that salaries will continue to rise in 2019 as the additional accountancy jobs that have been introduced create ‘churn’ in the market and supply and demand factors play a role in ensuring that salary growth is a reality.

“Meeting the projected demand for talent within Ireland’s Financial Services
Sector will be one of the biggest issues for recruiters in 2019.“
Top Tip for 2019
• Private Equity• Securities• Depositary• Risk• Credit
The Irish Financial Services sector consists of more than 250 of the world’s leading financial services companies and employs over 40,000 people. It is an industry that was front and centre of media commentary throughout 2018 as a direct result of its appeal as a post-Brexit base for global financial organisations.
2018 saw up to a 15% increase in live job vacancy numbers for this sector at different stages throughout the year. This led to rising demands for certain skillsets and upward pressure on salaries. As this sector has attracted 25% of all Brexit related company moves to date there is cautious optimism that 2019 will see partial implementation of those plans and we will see further increases in job vacancies for the sector. Meeting the projected demand for talent within Ireland’s Financial Services Sector will be one of the biggest issues for recruiters in 2019.
The Financial Services Sector in Ireland has a good track record at attracting overseas talent with almost one fifth of all vacancies in the sector having been filled from abroad in 2018 but lack of housing and increasing rental prices are becoming a growing concern for international talent looking to move to Ireland.

FUND ADMINISTRATION
Funds & Investment
To attract and retain talent, we have seen organisations increase their salaries throughout 2018, particularly in highly skilled areas. We expect this trend to continue into 2019 as salary increases ranging from 10% to 25% for highly skilled jobs have quickly become the norm
as companies struggle to source talent. Furthermore, improved benefit packages coupled with higher salaries have become more of a selling point than career progression for candidates.
The funds industry which has been a jewel in the crown of the financial services sector has maintained growth throughout 2018. Demand for graduates, product specific fund accountants, compliance, risk and depositary professionals has remained high and will continue to do so in 2019 as Brexit planned administrators and asset managers look to open their doors here. With more than 100 UK based asset managers and funds having applied to the Irish Central Bank for authorisation in Ireland, competition for talent looks likely to heat up even further particularly within risk and compliance areas where Pre-Approved Control Function (PCF) positions are top of the list for new entrants.

Within the world of retail banking the effort to slash cost bases under target continues. Job cuts still look likely in some areas into 2019 particularly throughout middle management, the branch network and back office service centres. No doubt, Fintech has seen the world of branch banking change forever. Despite this, the mortgage and lending market has been going through a period of change and growth over the last year which has opened opportunities for professionals across specialist finance organisations, banks and credit unions. Demand for loan and mortgage arrears/restructuring professionals saw a surge in 2018 as various loan books changed hands. We expect this trend to continue into 2019.

The construction market continued to expand throughout 2018 with forecasts showing this trend will continue into 2019. With the government’s commitment to Project 2040 and the Land Development Agency, we expect to see more of a focus on residential projects. Recent data has indicated that while more homes are being built, they are far off meeting the demand in the market. In addition, the drive to provide more residential development will have a knock-on effect on infrastructure projects required for servicing areas of housing growth.
There is significant optimism in the wider economy for continued growth and as Brexit takes shape, construction companies will have the opportunity to provide services to firms looking to relocate their EU base to Ireland. On the flip side, Brexit fears loom over the construction industry as we are yet to see how it may affect investment decisions, the cost of materials from the UK and other related factors.

Top Tips For 2019
It is important to keep your industry knowledge and skillset up to date as technological developments in areas such as BIM, scheduling software and approaches to document control continue to proliferate throughout the industry. If possible, commit to part time study in relevant technical areas. This adds considerable value to your skills and conveys to employers that you are serious about being knowledgeable in your sector.
In terms of progressing your career, it’s imperative to get involved with as many stages of a project as you can, including closing out and handover. This not only demonstrates commitment to the project, it will enhance your experience of various aspects of construction and design while affording real project achievements that can be highlighted on a CV.
Throughout 2018, salaries steadily rose for the majority of professions within the construction industry. We project this upward trend to continue into 2019, especially within building services design, civil engineering, structural engineering and quantity surveying. As companies struggle to source highly qualified talents, broader packages are being offered to candidates with some including relocation assistance to candidates returning from abroad. Furthermore, flexible working arrangements including working from home and flexitime working are being offered, especially within design consultancies. Initiatives like this are becoming the norm as companies fight to retain engineers and construction professionals.

The market is strengthening rapidly, with the likes of junior HR roles and recruitment roles leading the way, but other senior and specialist roles are not far behind. Throughout 2018, we saw companies beginning to invest more in their employees as they struggle to attract and retain talent. This in turn has created more HR positions in the areas of L&D, reward, and employee engagement. We forsee this trend continuing throughout 2019 as the fight for talent intensifies.
Furthermore, there has been a sizeable increase in the number of companies hiring recruiters. This is a trend mirrored throughout Ireland and we expect a notable increase in the number of recruitment vacancies in 2019. Specifically, HR professionals with strong operational/ER experience in the manufacturing sector will see more opportunities in 2019.

There has been a marked increase in salaries, especially for more junior roles, where competition for talent is fierce. Companies are broadening their overall packages, not just with the traditional offerings such as healthcare/pension/bonus, but with more bespoke perks such as flexible/remote working, wellness initiatives, CSR initiatives, etc. This trend will have to continue into 2019 as companies vie for the strongest candidates.
Don’t be afraid of temp contracts! You will appear more attractive to potential hiring managers as you have decided to take up a temp contract while in between jobs. This shows that you are eager to work, will potentially be broadening your skillset, and that you are proactive in your approach. It’s also a great way to increase your network.

Change is a Good Thing The insurance sector is historically recognised by its formal, some say old-fashioned look, but the industry is changing. Smaller companies are competing with the long-established heavy hitters for a bigger share of the market and some of the most recognised brands in the industry are merging to counter the ever-shifting landscape.
Consolidation Means Expansion; 2018 saw consolidation within the insurance sector with several headlines marking mergers and acquisitions. This type of news is regularly followed by news of job cuts or redundancies, but that has not been the case. If anything, the opposite seems to be happening in Ireland. In an ironic turn of events, this consolidation seems to be breeding expansion!
And expansion in the Irish market doesn’t look like it’s slowing down in 2019. Several companies have already committed to setting up or expanding Irish offices post-Brexit, with people already onboard in a number of these. 2019 should see further announcements along these lines, particularly, as at the time of writing, the UK Brexit agreement is still up in the air.
Thoughts on the Market
Challenges & Opportunities; With Brexit, GDPR, diversity and InsureTech grabbing headlines on a regular basis we are seeing insurance companies moving in directions many never anticipated. As Ireland’s insurance sector focused on Brexit and GDPR in 2018, and they still require plenty of focus in 2019, we should see a greater focus now on how they approach diversity and InsureTech in 2019.Ireland is already once of the most diverse countries in the EU and will need to be even more so as employers look to Europe and beyond to fill any talent shortages. 2018 saw the trend for attracting overseas talent continue and it will not slow down in 2019.
InsureTech is the other exciting development within the insurance sector that will only get more relevant over the next couple of years. Artificial intelligence and data analytics are at the forefront on insurance innovation and more and more jobs will open in these areas in 2019 and beyond. Driverless cars are already raising more questions than answers for insurers and automakers and this is one discussion that will be particularly interesting to see play out.
Salaries in 2019
Retention was the focus for most employers in the sector throughout 2018. As a result, salaries have been increasing around 10-15% in several areas. Surprisingly, salaries have not been the predominant factor when it came to people moving jobs in 2018. “What are the benefits” is usually the first question asked when a candidate is considering a change. Pension, healthcare and bonuses continue to be at the top of people’s lists of required benefits, however flexible working hours is becoming almost as important for a lot of people.
Achieving the highly valued work-life balance seems to be a key selling point and employers offering basic salary packages with little or no benefits or flexibility are finding it very difficult to attract/retain talent.

General Insurance
The general insurance sector saw a steady demand in 2018 with traditional skills in claims and underwriting leading the way in open vacancies throughout the year. The regularly highlighted cases of fraud within the motor insurance sector continued to be a focus for insurers and claims handlers experienced in litigated claims have been highly sought after throughout the year. 2019 should see no change in this as companies continue hiring for these roles as we reach the end of 2018.
Underwriting has steadily returned to the fore with numerous companies hiring in the general and reinsurance space in 2018. Again, this doesn’t look like it will slow down and 2019 should see the number of vacancies remain steady if not increasing.

Life & Pensions
It was keeping the status quo in 2018 as far as the life & pension space was concerned. Defined benefit and defined contribution pension administration experience continued to be the number one requirement for employers. This has been the trend for several years now and doesn’t look like it will slow down in 2019. Other areas where we saw a lot of demand was in the broker consultant space on the commercial side. This should continue into 2019 with employers looking for the best consultants to drive revenues in this space.

Compliance
Compliance is at the forefront of everybody’s mind since the introduction of GDPR and this has led to the biggest increases in salaries in the insurance sector. Demand for compliance officers and data protection professionals has gone through the roof and employers are willing to pay to attract and retain the best talent in the area.
Consultancy in this area is increasing and this is causing salaries to rise with 10-15% increases as a standard and base starting salaries for 1-2 years’ experience starting around the 40-45k mark. 2019 should see this continue with the potential for salaries to level off but with more companies entering the market and competing for the same talent this may not happen.

creativity, we are seeing a noticeable trend of more and more candidates moving towards this area. Furthermore, as companies move towards digital transformation, we are seeing a noticeable increase in the demand for strong mobile developers across all industries.
Business AnalysisWith more and more tech companies choosing to set up operations in Ireland, we will see business analyst positions that require not only impeccable interpersonal skills but also a solid knowledge and understanding of evolving technologies. This is evident in the increase of hybrid positions such as roles that include a mix of business analyst and data analytics attributes.
Project ManagementThe increasing demand for project managers will continue in 2019. With an accelerated pace of digital transformation, companies will seek project managers capable of utilizing these changes while applying a systematic approach to deliver projects successfully.
ProductTechnical understanding and ability to translate technical requirements into everyday language, is a crucial part of product management. Commercial awareness and strong business acumen are a must have on today’s IT market, and because of that, product professionals are in a big demand and key factor of every software environment.
IT Security/RiskThe security market is a fine balance of technical and soft skills. The challenge for companies is finding people with the technical prowess to identify, mitigate, fix and prevent different threats/attacks/breaches, while also finding the right leaders in IT security to drive a culture across a business which makes the staff a security conscious group - lowering the margin of human error which leads to security breaches.
QA & TestingThe QA and test market is now a hot topic for many, if not most, companies. With stories hitting the headlines of QA/testing disasters leaving customers in chaos, companies are now focused on upping their game to prevent them being next in line, and ultimately provide a better experience for their customers. Throughout 2019, technology will continue to advance and the continued transition towards more of an engineering led culture by most companies will mean the QA & test market will need to continue to adapt. The increasing adoption of DevOps meaning testing is introduced at a much earlier stage, machine learning within testing and performance engineering will all feature heavily in 2019.
Big Data & Analytics2018 saw a very noticeable increase in demand for candidates within the big data and analytics space. As the market moves more towards AI and automation of processes, the more “traditional” analytics roles are being combined to form a unique combination of skills that may not have been seen before.
Over the next few years, candidates can be expected to upskill in a number of areas to reflect the creation of these new “hybrid roles” (data analysts working as BI consultants, actuaries working as data scientists etc.).
InfrastructureIT infrastructure is the largest and most fluid market within IT. As technology advances, so too must a business’ operations in order to be as productive with their tech as they can be. Over the last few years the two areas which have best represented that dynamic are the migration to cloud and the growth of DevOps. Both are in demand for companies and a valuable but rare skill in candidates.
Mobile/GamingWith creativity at an all-time high, the Irish IT market is thriving within the mobile and gaming industries.

“35% of our placements in 2018 came from relocators from the UK to Dublin, is
this a knock on effect of Brexit?”
Ireland’s legal market, whilst small in comparison to the UK, is a mix of small practices with an average of 2 to 20 solicitors employed and “larger” firms with up to 300 solicitors employed. Salaries are rising within the industry as a few major international firms have relocated to Ireland tightening up the talent pool.
Another interesting development this year is that Dublin based firms are increasing their presence into other regions of Ireland. Dublin is the main hub for Ireland’s legal industry, however Galway and Cork have seen some notable names from Dublin’s legal scene set up bases here.
In terms of hiring in 2018, we have seen increasing demands for solicitors who have experience in the areas of commercial property, construction, banking & finance (particularly financial regulatory), funds, commercial/technology, data protection, corporate.
Furthermore, we have witnessed an increase in demand for non-qualified legal executives and legal secretaries to provide support to busy legal teams. There is a lack of experience in this area and salaries have risen substantially to attract staff.
It has been another busy year for company secretarial hiring, however there was a slight dip towards the end of 2018.

Salaries in 2019
There has been an increase in salaries offered across the board in the legal sector, and one particularly interesting development we are seeing is that firms are much more willing than in recent years to offer reduced hours and work from home options to attract and retain the best staff.
We are also seeing increased innovative and strategic hiring from the medium sized practices in Ireland, who are offering something slightly different to the larger firms from a cultural and opportunity perspective. Additionally, their salaries have become more and more competitive with the larger outfits this year.
This has been particularly true at the senior level, where firms are hiring big names as partners and giving them flexibility and a creative licence to grow a team in their way. If you have a following of clients, you can earn a very strong salary.
Another interesting development this year is that Dublin based firms are increasing their presence into the regions of Ireland. Galway and Cork have particularly seen some notable names in Dublin’s legal scene set up bases here.
Brexit: Since the announcement of an impending Brexit; and the convoluted, unclear and staggered nature of negotiations between the UK and the EU, the eyes of Europe has turned to Ireland as the UK’s closest neighbour and what will now be the only English-speaking country in the EU. From a legal perspective, it will be the only common law jurisdiction in the EU when the UK leaves.
“Big Business” has proven that it is not willing to ‘wait and see’. The proof is in the pudding with some major global players in the financial services, legal and tech sectors taking precautionary and strategic decisions to open new offices in several other major European cities. Ireland, with its business consortia, political figures and the IDA, has engaged in a competitive “battle” with its EU “rivals” to attract some of this new business and seems to be doing very well. Huge players in the financial services sector are currently undergoing a “lift and drop” of their front-end operations from London to Dublin. The rumour mill says many more companies are in the pipeline seeking Central Bank approval to do something similar.
Continued FDI:As the EU’s fastest growing economy for the past few years, it is not only Brexit contributing to the upsurge in business here. Our “friendly” tax regime, a talented
and innovative indigenous workforce, ability to attract the best talent from around the globe, and a reputation as Europe’s technology capital has meant that multinationals continue to invest here from the US and further afield.
New Market Entrants: The reasons above as well as others have painted Ireland as a picture of financial health with a plethora of opportunities to make money for legal services providers. We have seen the arrival of a number of major players in the legal world to Dublin such as Simmons & Simmons, Pinsent Masons, DLA Piper, Lewis Silkin but to name a few.
From a talent retention and acquisition standpoint 2018 was incredibly competitive and there were some winners and losers. The top 20 firms in Ireland have continued to grow, however have lost some key players to these new market entrants and the continuing lure of in-house positions to practice solicitors.

Predictions for 2019
1. The legal industry in Ireland will continue to experience continued pressures to attract and retain talent across a number of areas unless innovative recruitment and retention methods are utilised.
2. Culture of law firms and legal departments will become as important as salaries to attract and retain talent.
3. Traditional Irish law firms will remain under threat from loss of staff to new market entrants and in-house legal departments. Competitive salaries will be important to negate this, but flexibility and benefits equally so. Not everyone wants to move in-house, but work-life balance will become an increasing concern.
4. More companies will move to Ireland, increasing the amount of competition for talent.
5. Busy areas will continue to be across the areas of financial regulatory, commercial/technology, aviation finance, funds, derivatives, construction, property, corporate banking.
6. Partner level hires will continue to be on the rise with all firms in competition to grow.
7. Salaries will increase slightly again in 2019, because of the surrounding pressures.
8. The market will become more specialised, to offer “London” style legal services to new companies in Ireland used to this level of service.
9. Irish solicitors based in the UK will continue to move back home should Brexit not play out well.
10. Firms will buy more into the idea of offering “work from home” options; offer sign on bonuses; relocation packages and assistance and other methods to attract the best talent.

Experience in video marketing strategies will be key in 2019. As companies begin to augment their content strategies to engage their online audience, we predict video to be a core aspect of this.
It’s a common enough phenomenon - an increase in activity in a specialised jobs market leads to competition for talent and the economic factors of supply and demand kick into play.
This quarter alone we have seen a number of senior positions in performance marketing, ecommerce and insights where the hiring manager states that unless the candidates come from named competitors they will not be considered for the role as they believe they will not have the correct skillset. For these lucky candidates salaries can be negotiated upwards.

There appears to be disparity between the supply and demand of suitable talent in many sub sectors resulting in companies selling themselves in more unique and creative ways. Aspects such as company culture and benefits packages are being advertised in a bid to attract top talent.
Demand for candidates with experience in the professional services sector in particular communication and demand generation specialists grew in 2018 and we foresee this to continue to grow in 2019.
The majority of industry sectors experienced growth throughout 2018 boosting the availability of jobs. Niche sectors such as social media have continued to experience meteoric growth as companies seek to exploit the many opportunities that social media presents. However, as companies scramble to catch up with the ever-changing social media landscape, quality, engaging and relevant content has become central to companies’ strategies with influencer marketing content topping the pile.

We expect some companies will increase their salaries in 2019 as the demand for talent is outstripping supply in some areas. However, we have noticed a trend of candidates seeking extra benefits and flexible working hours in place of increased remuneration. Companies, especially those struggling to source talent, seem to be responding to this by broadening their benefits packages.

The pace of change in technology has led to a demand for more experienced candidates, where before entry-level roles required candidates merely to be fluent in a language(s). Now companies are requiring candidates to have experience, either practically or academically, in the industry or technology they are dealing with.

The competition for multilingual talent is higher than ever. As per previous years German, Dutch and the Nordic languages are the highest in demand. However, in 2018 we have seen companies avoiding competing for candidates based in Ireland by sourcing from mainland Europe and increasingly by setting up local offices to hire for senior local talent in-country.

Putting real thought and time in to your CV layout and content is crucial. Competition for top roles is high so spending time tailoring your CV for each application you are making is time well spent. The best CVs show demonstrated relevant examples of your skill set/experience in clear bullet points. Ensure technical skills are broken down to show your abilities. Also, be careful of using generic words, show your technical skillset off.
If you are in between jobs, keep your skills up to date by filling in any unemployment periods with temping or volunteering. Unexplained gaps on your CV can raise a few red flags.
Show up! We have noticed a trend of interviews not being rescheduled when cancelled by the candidate. This is not always the case but it’s certainly a tip to bear in mind when you are actively looking for a new role.

2018 saw the office support market grow rapidly. As new companies began to prosper, and established organisations continued to expand, so too did the requirements to support those within – whether it was basic admin staff or senior administrative assistants. 2018 also saw an increase in industry specific positions with 40% of companies seeking candidates that come from their respective field. Due to rapid expansion of the market, companies are scrambling for candidates that can hit the ground running with an understanding of technical lingo.
Positions predicted to be most in demand for 2019 are team administrative support or team administration coordinator position roles. These roles see candidates
We have seen salary increases on the junior end of office support roles. While some companies can choose to pay below market rate, they are beginning to realise that they will not attract suitable talent in this candidate-driven market.
Throughout 2018, we have seen an increase in the prevalence of counter offers for candidates and at times companies being drawn into bidding wars. As the market continues to tighten up, we unfortunately expect this trend to continue in 2019.
In response to this, companies need to bear in mind candidates expectations of the job and ensure they are selling the benefits of their organisation during the

These roles are also becoming more tech savvy with the growth of new technologies such as diary, flight and hotel booking apps. Candidates experienced with up to date apps will be highly sought after and can demand salaries upwards of €45k.
The temporary market saw an uplift of 15% in 2018 a trend which we are predicting will continue in 2019. Short term temp administrators along with longer term temp receptionists are the two areas with the most demand.

An interesting development to note is the upwards trend of benefit packages, opposed to candidates simply seeking higher salaries. Work life balance appears to be top of the list as candidates have listed flexi-time working options and increased annual leave as their most sought-after benefits.

Salaries in 2019Top Tip For 2019
Companies want to feel like you want to work for them. In a market where candidates have multiple options available to them, what can often be lost is demonstrating you have researched the company and actually want to work for them.
Show a prospective employer why you want to work for the company and what aspects of the role interest you. By doing this, you stand a much better chance of getting over the line!
Basic salaries are facing more and more scrutiny as living costs consistently increase. Whether the person is renting, looking for a mortgage or has a family, the priority is what they will consistently get in their fixed income. Base salaries have increased year on year in part due to the lucrative nature of the tech industry, but many companies simply cannot afford to match these salaries.
For companies limited in this regard, look at ways you can reduce the individual’s cost base – offering health insurance, TaxSaver for commuters and so on. Small benefits like this do add up and contribute to reducing a candidate’s net outgoings which in turn may lure talent your way.

“Candidates are in demand. If you want them, so does someone else!”
Within software sales, companies want to see candidates that have a consistent and proven track record. It’s a red flag if you have worked in several companies for short periods of times (less than 1 year). So, make educated decisions about your ‘Next Steps’ and commit to your roles for longer periods.
On your CV, outline your achievements and highlight your quota attainment. Face-to-face, know your figures and be articulate around this. If you didn’t hit target but no one in your team did, outline your performance relative to your team-mates.
For candidates looking to get into software sales with no previous software sales experience, focus on sales targets and achievements and draw parallels with sales processes.

2016
The software industry is booming and with that, the need for strong software sales candidates has risen dramatically. Salaries will continue to rise within software sales in 2019 as there is a notable shortage of talent within the industry.
There will always be a basic salary and a variable salary (commission) within sales industries. Depending on what market you are selling to, this is split in different ways. SMB AEs tend to work on a 50/50 split while Enterprise AEs could be looking at a 70/30 split.
Less direct sales roles (like account managers and customer success roles) can also have different split ratios with a stronger focus on basic salaries.
Thoughts on the Market
Aside from basic salaries, candidates are actively seeking benefits packages with the age-old staples of pensions and healthcare being the bare minimum. Benefits such as additional annual leave days, company phones/laptops and catered lunches or lunch allowances are becoming the norm. It will prove very difficult to source suitable or experienced talent without offering a selection of benefits.
Salaries in 2019
to sales. Companies often hire at graduate level or will hire people with 1-2 years sales experience in direct sales.
For 2019, companies will continue to need hunters. Companies will be concerned with your sales style and process, who you have sold to previously and what your career aspirations are. Strong candidates are in high demand and some of the bigger software companies are able to wrap up a full recruitment process in less than 2 weeks. This amplifies the importance of moving quickly with suitable candidates. If you like them, chances are so do other companies and in this market, we have seen candidates being offered well above market salaries to secure them.
Like every other market, Ireland is now facing a talent shortage due to nearing full employment. Within software sales, the roles that tend to be most in demand are account executive positions. These are hunter roles where you will be tasked with finding and closing new business deals within your target market. Typically, the software companies have separate teams of account executives (new business) and account managers (renewals & growth). Similar to other sub sectors of sales, software sales is a very target driven environment with monthly or quarterly quotas.
Other roles that are in demand are business development representatives or sales development representatives. These are junior/entry level sales positions and companies tend to like candidates with a strong educational background and some exposure

The growth of the biologics and biopharma industry in Ireland reflects current global trends. According to The Irish Times, sales of biologics products look set to grow by 10% in the next eight years. Given anticipated expansion and growth of new sites here in Ireland, it is estimated that there will be almost 8,500 potential job openings arising within the biopharma industry in Ireland over the next five years.
These investments promise the life sciences sector in Ireland will continue to thrive, with strong pharmaceutical hubs based in Dublin and Cork, and rapidly developing areas in Sligo, Waterford and Mayo. The future career opportunities for the scientific workforce is looking very strong for 2018 and beyond.
Ireland has a long tradition of attracting manufacturing facilities from major life sciences companies and the life sciences sector in Ireland has continued to grow strongly in the last decade. There are now over 60,000 people employed in the industry, either directly or indirectly. This trend looks set to continue into 2018 with major expansions of many of the big pharma players across the country. The IDA reports the biopharmaceutical industry has made a capital investment of approximately €8 billion in new facilities in Ireland, predominantly in the last 10 years. This represents one of the largest investments in new biotech facilities anywhere in the world.
Out of the world’s twenty-five largest independent, public biotech and pharma companies, Ireland is home to twenty-four of them. However recent figures put the number of pharmaceutical companies operating here at approximately seventy-five. While many of the large companies are major sources of employment here, new smaller start-up companies are also seeking out Ireland as a new home which is exciting in terms of R&D.
As further investment continues within Ireland the salaries and remuneration packages are going to increase. With the candidate market so strong and increasing demand for even junior positions, this is driving up already inflationary wage rates across the country as companies try to keep staff.
