19141914 was the worst ever Sakurajima eruption. It was the worst eruption in 20th century Japan.
Luckily almost all the people on the island had evacuated days before because of large earthquakes leading up to the eruption, which started on Jan 11.
At first the eruption was highly explosive, causing pyroclastic flows(waves of heat which travel at high speeds and reach burning temperatures).
Afterwards there were waves of lava which continued for months. The island grew and swallowed other islands, filling the channel between the mainland and the island. This caused the tides to rise and become higher.
FUN FACTS
• It is a Stratovolcano
• the summit is split into three peaks called Kitadake (North peak) Nakadake (Middle peak) and Minamidake (south peak)

•The Japanese Metropolitan Agency issued four states of activeness and sakurajima is level ORANGE - erupting or one may occur at any time
• The people living on the island make their children wear hard hats on their way to school to protect them against debris
