Human Body Systems

Students will work in groups to research the body systems. Research will focus on the structure and

function of the major organs in the assigned body system. Each group will be responsible for a visual

aid to be used in a presentation to the class. In addition, each group will be responsible for researching

and presenting information on diseases associated with different body system.

Primary Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to name the eleven human body systems and their functions.

Students will be capable to identify homeostasis.

Students will be able to identify the organs and structural parts present in each system.

Students will be able to describe the basic structure of the major organs in each system.

Students will recognize different diseases associated with the body systems.

Students will enhance their research and presentation skills.

Co-Requisite – Content

Students will analyze the nature of the relationships between structures and functions in living

cells.

Explain the role of cell organelles for both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including the cell

membrane, in maintaining homeostasis and cell reproduction.

Students will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations.

Students will derive the relationship between single-celled and multi-celled organisms and the

increasing complexity of systems.

Students will assess the dependence of all organisms on one another and the flow of energy

and matter within their ecosystems

Requirements:

Work in groups of 4 to research an assigned body system, create a visual aid, and present

information to the class. Information presented during the presentation will be used to fill in a chart

that will be used as a study guide for the test.

What to research for your assigned body system:

o List and explain the functions of the organ system.

o Identify the major organs and their functions.

o Describe the basic structure of the major organ in assigned body system.

o Describe a disease associated with each body system.

o Research

Visual Aid:

o Title

o Outline of body

o Diagram of major organs in anatomically correct locations

o Labels on major organs

o Neat, easy to understand, colorful, creative

Presentation:

o Present all required information.

o Organized and easy to follow.

o All group members participate equally in the presentation.

o Spoken clearly and eye contact with audience.

Project Checklist

Use this checklist as a checklist to help you earn an A+ on your project!

Task 1:

Students will research the body system and fill in a chart.

Introduction to Body systems

• List the different systems of the human body.

• List the major structures of each body system.

• Describe the function of each body system.

each. NOTE: Your diagram should also include the following bones in the body: cranium,

clavicle, humerus, scapula, sternum, rib, vertebra, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges,

pelvis (may list parts), femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, and metatarsals.

• Describe each of the following joints and where they are located: hinge, pivot, and ball-and-

socket. You may include other joints as well.

• Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 2

examples.

• Find 5 fun facts about your body system.

• Describe 2 diseases associated with your body system.

Muscular System

• Major functions of muscular system

• Describe the function and locations of each type of muscle – skeletal muscle, smooth muscle,

and cardiac muscle

• Diagram that includes the major muscles in the body - biceps, oblique abdominis, sartorius,

deltoid, orbicularis oculi, sternomastoid, gastrocnemius, pectoral, temporalis, gluteus maximus,

quadriceps, tibialis, masseter, rectus abdominis, and triceps
