The Collect for Ash Wednesday starts us off on our journey of reflection and repentance for the

Lenten season. We come together on Ash Wednesday and receive the sign of the cross on our

foreheads as a reminder of our mortality. It is a reminder to be humble, to keep our priorities as

Christians in the forefront of our minds, to reach out to others in need, for when any are in need,

we all are in need.

This is not an easy journey. We ask God for guidance as we begin the process of the spring clean-

ing in our hearts and minds. As we trace the path of selflessness that Jesus walked, we become

aware of those things we should have done those things which we ought not to have done, or not

done the things we ought to have done. We can, should, ought, must continue to do better.

Yet this is also a time to realize how, with the support of our parish family, we are able to accom-

plish so much more than we could have on our own. There are so many in our midst who work to

improve the lives of those around us. Perhaps this year, we may become more observant of those

who offer their time and talent both within our parish and also in the community. I encourage

you, as part of your Lenten devotion, to encourage those who work behind the scenes, exercising

their ministry quietly and in humbleness. As we do this, as God works within us in spite of our

brokenness, may we also find new ways of being God’s presence of perfect remission and for-

giveness. May our lives continue to be an example of healing and reconciliation.

May we then be ready to celebrate the wonder and joy of the resurrection.

I wish you a holy Lent.

Lent 2019 Newsletter –Community Friendship Dinner January and February Dinners were very successful. Once again, Pilkington’s generously do-

nated hams and we served them at the January dinner.

All Saints’ community dinner will continue to provide a vital and important night of fellowship

and a delicious meal on the 2nd Wednesday of every month throughout the year.

We serve an average of 80-100 guests each month. This ministry is successful because of the

wonderful volunteers. Thank you to all who donated food and/or volunteer each month. Also the

monetary donations make the difference.

New Volunteers are always needed from the parish or from the community. We need your help!

Music at All Saints' in Lent & Holy Week

You will notice that the Music for Sundays and special services during in Lent and the Holy Week

are a little different.

1. Gloria and Alleluia will be absent, Hymns, Anthems and the organ meditation & postlude

will have a strong Lenten theme. This music will offer an open invitation for quiet medita-

tion and reflection.

2. Lenten Theme - The Seven Last Words of Christ; music by Haydn

During this season of Lent, there will be special services which the choral anthems, the

hymns and instrumental music pay close attention to both the themes of Lent and the lec-

ture-series on “Seven Last Words of Christ”

Ash Wednesday – March 6th at 10am & 7pm

Lenten Lunch Series – Tuesdays at 12noon, March 12th, 19th, 26th, April 2nd & 9th

3. Holy Week will feature a new song for the Procession of Palms, Bells and waving our palms

in praise. Maundy Thursday will find us in our “Upper Room” with footwashing, commun-

ion, the anthem and hymns. And Holy Week will be concluded on Holy Saturday with a

peaceful Choral Evensong.

I hope you will appreciate these Lenten & Holy week services, with music that invites us to focus

inwardly and still allows us to celebrate God’s goodness and mercy in outward praise.

We look forward to a great celebration of Easter Sunday on April 21st at 8:30am & 10:30am with

a joyful blast of music. And our Easter celebrations continue with our annual Easter Pageant on

Sunday April 28th at 10:30am.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is continuing to grow and has proven to be

quite successful. Since our first blessing of the shawls in May of

2014, we have gifted about 150 shawls to parishioners and non-

parishioners in need of comfort and love! Each recipient has ex-

pressed their deep appreciation of the shawls and the blessings they

have received from them.

We have expanded this ministry to include “Hugs Rugs” for children

who may also be in need.

I am quite certain, that there is an invisible thread of love and prayers

stretching from the knitter’s heart to the shawl’s recipients that

soothes them all in body, mind and spirit. That thread has its origins within a faith in Jesus Christ.

All Saint’s shows itself daily as a truly caring congregation! We have several crafters who have

compassionately created these shawls with their prayers knitted or crocheted into each stitch and

we are thankful to these dedicated ladies. Also, Father Doug has blessed each and every one of

these shawls on several occasions at the services on Sunday or during the week at the Wednesday

service.

The need is great, as soon as the shawls have been blessed, we receive many requests and they are

rapidly delivered out. If you know of anyone who could benefit from receiving one of our shawls,

please contact Moira Southwell at 705-445-6072. If there is anyone who would like to participate

in this very worthwhile ministry by knitting or crocheting a shawl I have many patterns to choose

from for all skills level.

This ministry would be truly thankful for your generosity of spirit and talent.

May 3-5, 2019. AWARE (Anglican Women Alive, Renewed & Refreshed), the women’s re-

treat will again be held at Elim Lodge, near Buckhorn. The theme this year is ‘Fear is a

Liar’. This is a great weekend which includes a theme speaker, great worship, discussions, work-

shops, free time, great food and wonderful fellowship. There is a $15 discount for early bird reg-

check out the bulletin board. There are several women from the parish planning to attend and we

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Task Group calls us to prayer.

During the 5th week of Lent, Sunday 29 March to Sunday 5 April, we are

all being called to a Season of Prayer and Repentance.

An international task group established by the Archbishop of Canterbury

to restore relationships in the Anglican Communion is proposing a Season

of Prayer and Repentance. The Archbishop’s Task Group was established after the Primates’

Meeting in January 2016. Its remit is to “restore relationships, rebuild mutual trust and responsi-

bility, heal the legacy of hurt and explore deeper relationships.”

In proposing a Season of Prayer and Repentance, the Task Group members stress that they are

not pointing fingers at any particular part of the Communion. Bishop Linda Nicholls from the

Anglican Church of Canada’s Diocese of Huron chaired the last meeting of the Task Group. She

said: “we’ve been very clear when we first proposed a season of repentance that this is about the

biblical admonition that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that every one

of us has areas in our lives individually, and corporately that require repentance.” She added:

“some of that repentance is around how we treat one another, how we have worked with, or not

with one another. And that we believe that all of us can examine ourselves in the season of Lent.”

This initiative stems from the deep divisions in the Anglican Communion around differences of

opinion around certain tenets, but could also apply to all aspects of our life together, in the parish

and the wider community. Our prayers are a way of seeking ways to listen to, love and respect

each other in the midst of disagreement.

Parish Missional Transformation

At the beginning of 2018 you told us that you were very supportive of the things we do to wel-

come the broader community into our loving community at All Saints, such ministries as Friend-

ship Dinner, Co3 and YAD. You also felt that we should raise the profile of what we have to of-

fer as opposed to starting up anything new. You felt our resources were already stretched, espe-

cially our people resources.

We have also heard stories from people who are very conscious of and concerned for people in the

community, but often wonder how to connect. It has been proven many times over that as we

build trusting, caring relationships with people they are more open to experiencing the Good

News we have already discovered and want to share. In view of this, we have a few questions for

us all to ponder.

Do you see people in need in our community—not just in need of material things?

Have you encountered anyone in the community recently that you felt God was nudging you to-

wards?

Did you find a way to connect? or Did you wish you could but weren’t sure how to reach out?

Do you wish you could talk with others to share ideas about how to reach out?

Do you feel that there are things that would help to equip you to reach out?

Where have you seen the Spirit of God evident in unexpected places?

Stay tuned for an opportunity to come together to explore some of the above. If you have ideas to

share, please email the church with a subject line of PMT.
