Fall Newsletter 2018
There was a definite nip in the air yesterday as I stood on the putting green waiting for our
groups to arrive. It was beautiful and fresh and chilly. I actually had to put my jacket on and
I was glad that I had thought to put socks on! Then this morning I heard the geese as they flew
overhead. I noticed that there were leaves turning bright red on some of the trees. School has
resumed and we are back to our schedules of meetings and activities. How did this happen?
How did we get to the end of summer so fast?
Just as we face the seasonal changes we also face changes in our personal lives. Change is
inevitable, and necessary for life. If water does not change it becomes stagnant and no longer
useful. If fields are not cared for they turn into fields of weeds that are not productive. It is
the same for us as Christians. We are to work our faith within the community and personally
with thoughtfulness and care. The choices we make will affect our lives and the lives of oth-
ers that we encounter. Some times that might mean changing the way we do things or consid-
ering a new direction. What difference will we make? Will it be positive or negative? For
better or for worse? Will we accept the status quo or will we seek to do justice for those with-
out a voice? What new song will we sing to God and what new song will we sing about God?
How are our lives different because of our faith?
As we approach this season of fall, we are called to consider our gifts and talents and how we
can best use them for others. With Thanksgiving only a few weeks away we can give God
thanks for our very lives and ask for guidance as we seek new ways to help others. Big or
small, we all can make our world a better place as we all do our part.
Blessings
The Rev. Sharon E. Johnstone
Foundation Meeting
Father Doug has invited the All Saints’ Foundation Board to conduct their Annual General
Meeting in the Parish Hall Sunday September 30th after the 10:30am service. All parishioners
and guests will be invited to attend, to allow them to learn about the Foundation and its objec-
tives. That morning, the post-service coffee hour will take place in the library. Hopefully some
of the parishioners that go up for coffee will bring their coffee in to the Parish Hall, sit down,
and take in the Foundation information. At both services that morning a Foundation member
will talk to the congregation about the Foundation and invite people to the meeting, and present
the annual "distribution" cheque to a Warden ($15,250 this year). Notice of the meeting will
appear in the weekly Sunday bulletin, three or four weeks in advance of the date.

YAD (Young Adult Drop-in) for those 19-35 will start a new season on Tuesday,

board games, lunch and fellowship. Like Co3 (the Thursday morning drop in for adults
of all ages), this is a Missional Transformation initiative whose goal is to invite others
into an environment that reflects Kingdom values such as hospitality, unconditional
love, forgiveness, faith, hope, thankfulness and healing.

Fall Newsletter –Community Friendship Dinner It has been a busy summer for the Community Friendship Dinner. In July we served hamburg-
ers and hot dogs, in August we served Chicken Burgers on a Bun and in September we
BBQued spare ribs and Corn on the Cob from Valley Farm Market. The food is all donated by
our wonderful volunteers. Numbers have been lower this summer, but we are trying to figure
out why this is. If you have suggestions, let us know.
We welcomed new volunteers this summer, but we are always looking for more. We have put
up posters in both high schools looking for students who need to earn community service hours.
You can help with this! If you know of a high school aged teenager that needs community
hours, ask them to contact me. Come and chat with me at coffee hour after the 10:30am service
about volunteering or if you know of a community person that would like to volunteer, ask
them to contact me. (or the church office)
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO CONTINUE MAKING THIS OUT-REACH MINISTRY SUC-
CESSFUL!

International Dinner 2018
The International Dinner on Sept 14th was a great success and we thank
all the members of All Saints' and their friends for their participa-
tion. Tickets sold out quickly for this very popular annual event and the
evening proved to us how fortunate we are in Canada to have the excel-
lent variety of foods which we take so much for granted. Our caterers, the Olde Town Ter-
race, preparation and presentation of our East Coast Canada sourced food made this event
memorable.
Aaron Solomon, from Cape Breton Island, who was our entertainer for the evening was an
all time favourite. Those who took part in the silent auction found some unique items for
their appraisal. We hope those who enjoyed the evening are
making plans to attend again next year.

Pastoral/Spiritual Care at All Saints’---We all have a role to play.
We can all care for one another, and encourage each other in our faith in a loving, present
God. We do this through compassionate listening to each other, by following up with a
phone call when someone has been missing from a group or church, by delivering a meal to a
parishioner who is ill or grieving, by accompanying another to a doctor’s appointment, by
praying for and with each other and by walking alongside another during trying times.
We all can pray for those whose names are listed in the weekly bulletin. These people have
asked for all our prayers. We can pass on names (with permission from the person) to The
Prayer Circle---a group of people who pray for individuals who have asked for prayer, keep-
ing all very confidential.
We can involve ourselves in the Prayer Shawl ministry by prayerfully creating a prayer
shawl to be delivered to someone who is ill or suffering, as a tangible reminder of the prayers
of others and the love of God. Contact: Moira Southwell 705-445-6072
We can also contact the Pastoral Care team and make them aware of a parishioner who is ill,
in hospital or in need. Contact: Sharon Goldsworthy 705-441-2577 or Moira Southwell 705
-445-6072. The team ensures that Father Doug is made aware as well.
Father Doug and the trained team are involved in the following:
Anointing and individual prayers for healing are offered and both services on the 1st and 3rd
Sundays of the month.
Communion and/or anointing are available at home, by our priests or our fully trained and
licensed lay team, for those not well enough to get to church.
A number of ‘shut-ins’ are contacted each month by phone.
A Communion service is offered on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 1:30pm in the church.
This service is helpful for those who can’t get out on Sunday, for whatever reason, or those
who just wish to come to a midweek service. We also provide transportation & a time of fel-
lowship.
Monthly services are offered at Sunset Manor, Collingwood Nursing Home, Raglan Village,
Chartwell Retirement Home and Pine Villa Retirement Home. See poster re dates, times, etc.
Hospital visits are made every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday. and at other times as needed
by the team or Father Doug, depending on the circumstances.

From the Archives
We are pleased to report that All Saints’ Anglican Church Archives continues to benefit from the interest and
support of both parishioners and members of the public. Over the last several months a number of important gifts
have been made to the collections; among these gifts are the following:
From Matthew Pretty, a framed print of a drawing of “Claverleigh” by well-known local artist, Robert
Kemp. This is the house standing west of Creemore that provided the plan for All Saints’ Anglican
Church Rectory. It can be seen quite clearly in the drawing that “Claverleigh” is of board and batten con-
struction in contrast to our rectory that is built of stone. This is a most welcomed gift and it is sincerely
appreciated.
From Alexina Reid, a former resident of Collingwood and now of Hanover, Ontario, the Archives has
received a number of important documents and photos. These include a copy of the history of All Saints’
Collingwood that was produced for the church’s 100th Anniversary in 1955; a photo of the interior of the
church during the Christmas season in the 1940’s; the baptismal certificate of William Ivan Girvin, and
the original hand written dedication inscription that appears in the World War Two Memorial Book that
was a gift of the family of William Ivan Girvin. The book itself is displayed in the north side of the organ
case. Each of these items is an important gift in itself while together, they constitute a major donation that
is greatly appreciated and from which the Archives Collections benefit.
From Velma Cook the Archives has recently received a “Record Book” detailing much important infor-
mation about the Mission that was supported by All Saints’, Collingwood at Petches’ Beach, on Highway
26, east of Collingwood. During the 1950’s this was an important and active outreach venture of the
church. A drawing of the west side of the church buildings done by Nick Hodson is a major addition to
the collection of such works that hang in the Parish Hall; it is an excellent example of the artist’s crafts-
manship and style, and it is an important and valued gift that is greatly appreciated. During the course of
several years, Velma and her husband Finlay made a number of donations to the Archives and her con-
tinuing interest and support are gratefully acknowledged.
Earlier, Fran Bonwick shared with the Archives information and material regarding a relative who is memorial-
ized in the World War One Memorial Stained Glass Window that is above the altar; this, along with other docu-
mentation from various sources and anonymous donors has broadened and enriched the information that the Ar-
chives have about the stained glass windows. A wonderful collection of Sunday School leaflets and lesson out-
lines has been received from John Thomas and adds immeasurably to the information about this part of All
Saints’ life in the 1940’s, while a Sunday School attendance pin from an anonymous donor is a unique addition
to the collection.
All such gifts are most welcome, they are valued, sincerely appreciated and gratefully acknowledge.
As some readers will be aware, a rather interesting and fascinating collection of cards, letters, photographs and
various other items has been discovered behind the mantle that surrounds the fireplace in the west room of the
rectory. The discovery was made by Albert Scouten who has spent considerable time carefully extracting this
material that dates from the early 1900’s to the 1950’s. Once the material cleaned, identified and catalogued, it
will be on view for a period of time in the Parish Hall.
At this time it is appropriate to offer a word of appreciation for the interest and active support that several parish-
ioners – Liz Zizis, Jim Kelly, Don McArthur and others, give to the work of the Archives at All Saints’ Anglican
Church; thank you most Sincerely.
