Highly Effective Families

Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (1990) has sold over fifteen million copies. Individuals and

companies who have read the book and put the seven habits into practice have experienced some major transformations. Such happens when we have balance in our lives, put relation-ships before things and activities, foster a sense of mission, and become good listeners, all things articulated in Covey’s work.

This month as we celebrate Christmas and the feast of the Holy Family, we can reflect on a set of habits that, if lived fully, will enrich our family life as well as our life in the larger community. Compassion. This is a quality we find over and over in the gos-pels and it is the natural result of putting the needs of others ahead of ourselves. That car crash remains fixed in Americana as an example of how dangerous driving really is, especially when traffic rules are not followed. St. Monica’s Prayer Group Mission

Like St. Monica, we as parents pray for our chil-dren to be guided by Christ, especially during the formative years of high school. As a ser-

vice organization, our mission is to pray for our sons, families, and the staff and members of the St. Augustine community. Join us for “Thursdays with St. Monica” Parents assemble every Thursday morning for Mass at 7:45 a.m. in the chapel at Vasey Patio. Come as often as you can, stay as long as you can. In addition to benefiting your son, yourself, and your family, you earn Family Involvement hours each time you attend. For more information go to sahs.org/parents/St. Moni-ca’s or contact Toni Christy [email protected]

Augustinian HeritageAugustine: A student,

a teacher, a parent

Part Four:More of Augustine’s own reflections

on being a student

By Fr. Bob Gavotto, O.S.A., (’55)Saints Chaplain

A student is one who is:Able to Put Things in the Right PerspectivePut love in all the things that you do and they will make sense. Take love away and they become worthless and empty. (Sermon 138,2) All kinds of love have

a driving force and there is no such thing as a love, good or bad, that is at a standstill. Love spurs us to action without fail. Do you want to know what your love is? Just look at what drives you and in what direction. (Commentary on the Psalms, 121,1) Do you want to know what class of person you are? Take the test of love. Do you love the things of earth? You are earth. Do you owe your love to God? Be not afraid in saying it: you are God. (Trea-tise on the First Letter of John, 2,2,14)

Fr. Bob Gavotto OSA (’55)

When working at something we love, the effort is not taxing. In fact, we sometimes even enjoy that work. People enjoy hunting, fishing, harvesting grapes or play-ing some game. For when it involves something that is loved, either there is no work or the work itself is also loved. (The Good of Widowhood, 21,26) To love the enemy, as enemy, is madness. To love him or her like a brother or sister, is charity...How do physi-cians love those that are sick? Is it the sick that they love? If they love them as the sick, they would wish them to always be sick. No, it is for a different purpose that they love the sick; not they should still be sick, but that from being sick they should be made whole. (Treatise on the First Letter of John, 8)

Human and UnderstandingIf the truth is the object of the aspirations of all human beings, it cannot be exclusive personal property of any person. The truth cannot be exclusively mine or yours precisely because it has to be both yours and mine. (Commentary on the Psalms, 103,2,11) Let nobody be considered close to immortality for not having feelings. The health of the human being that writhes in pain is closer to immortality than that of some-one who has lost sensibility and who is hard and unfeel-ing. (Commentary on the Psalms, 55,6) Amid possible scandals, always think well of others. Humbly try to be yourself what you others to be, and they you will not think others to be what you are not. (Com-mentary on the Psalms, 30,2,7) Don’t despair of anyone as long as they are alive. (Commentary on the Psalms, 36,2,11)

A Seeker of Harmony and Balance The one who holds onto more is not the happier, rather the one who needs less. (Rule, 3,5) Although water puts out fire and fire dries up water, both are dangerous. Fire burns; water rots. The same thing happens in life. When adversity visits us, the fire of the tribulation tests our spirit. When pros-perity smiles upon us, the water of corruption weakens our solidity. Take care, therefore, that you are not burnt by fire nor rotted by water, and that you remain strong. (Commentary on the Psalms, 66,15)

Sincere and Open About One’s Self The happiness of the person that springs from a good conscience is a ‘Heaven’: a spiritual state where the soul is happy. (The Literal Meaning of Genesis, 12,34,65) There are some of you for whom the desire for human respect keeps you apart from your own con-science. If you are among these, take note that God sees within and that it is not possible to deceive God as witness, nor to escape from God as judge. (Letter 144,3) Put aside deception, speak the truth. Expose yourself to the illumination of the Truth and be open and transparent. (Sermon 166) [These excerpts are from Education, An Augustinian Approach, pages 20-25.]

Next issue, more of Augustine’s reflections, in his own words, about being a student.

St. Augustine, pray for us!

Angels Meet Every Third Tuesday

Angels at Saints is a prayer group founded in September, 2002 to provides ongoing prayer support of alumni families. The group, mostly

alum moms, meet every third Tuesday of the month for noon Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary church in Little Italy. Afterwards they meet for lunch at Fillipi’s Pizza Grotto Restaurant 1747 India Street. Grad moms, who usually attend are: Lorraine Bau-mann (Jonathan ‘02);. Maggie Loringer (Michael ‘02); Jackie Smith (Nathaniel ‘03); Patricia St. Clair (Brian ‘03) and Barbara Kristoff (Bart ‘03).. “There are usually 5 or 6 of us attending on any given month,” says Mrs. Baumann, “Any member of the Saints community is welcome to attend...just show up.”

Saintsmen. Although we thank you for your generosity, there are still many items on the school “Wish List” that we hope to fill. We encourage you to volunteer your time, share your talents and contribute your hard earned “treasures” through the APA.We are a real and unique community of students, alumni, parents and friends who all share common love and appreciation of the St. Augustine philosophy and its commitment to Catholic education for young men. It is with your help and dedication that we keep Saints mov-ing forward to meet its broad range of needs.

cents to see the possible consequences of their actions. For this age group, bad things happen to other people.Boys by themselves tend to be better decision-makers than in a group. When there is more than one, their rea-son seems to go out the window. Their natural proclivity to impress their peers often leads to a total disregard for safety. The addition of alcohol and/or drugs is a recipe for disaster, very often leading to the phone call every parent wishes to avoid – the late night call from the po-lice department that their son has been in an accident. Emphasize the necessity of buckling up for safety, enforce your son’s curfew and California’s teenage driv-ing laws, and talk to him openly about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

All families are welcome. Band parents will provide lightrefreshments, and a chance to win a beautiful Saints themed quilt,

handmade & donated by band mom, Marla Moore.

Cole Christy (‘12) & Maggie Adema (‘10) were part of the winning 18 and under co-ed swim relay team that conquered the 21 miles of the

cold Catalina Channel separating the island from the mainland. Rounding out the ocean relay squad were Clay Christy (Saints ’09); Sarah Rens (OLP ‘10); Tom Anderson, (Bishops); Jordan Hart (Patrick Henry) and Melissa Berkay (La Jolla Country Day). Each swimmer swam two one-hour legs. The relay began at 2 a.m. July 5th in extremely choppy waters. The temperature fluctuated between 57-64 degrees. This was the first 18-under relay team to make the channel swim, ever, so in the feat the relay team set a record of 9 hours 48 minutes. The Christy men each swam their first leg in total darkness, then each swam their second leg during the morning hours. Cole finished the relay swim by climb-ing out of the water onto dry land to stop the clock at approximately 11:48 a.m. A ceremony was held Nov. 7th to present the relay swimmers with their medals.

Saints Dominates Food Drive

A couple of years ago, Saintsman Sean Ducey (’09) dreamed up a friendly competition be-tween Cathedral and Saints to see which school

had the biggest heart when it came to gathering food for the needy. With help from fellow students, staff and faculty, “Rivals with Heart” food drive continues as a tradition between the schools. Of course, Saints dominated. Saints gathered 15,000 cans of foodstuff vs. 5,000 for Cathedral. All food has been donated to St. Vincent DePaul Village downtown.

One of the more interesting golf events in the county is called the Century Club Matches. Each year, 12 top selected amateur golfers

from San Diego who qualified through a series of events in 2009, including the SD City Championship, USGA qualifying events, SCGA qualifying events, and SD Amateur Tour events compete against the 12 top qualifying SD PGA players who qualified through their own series of qualifying events. For the second year in a row Saints faculty member Mr. Tom Isaak qualified to play in the annual event run by the Century Club of SD and co-sponsored by SAIC. The current score is now 19-18-1 with the professionals ahead. This year was the event’s first tie score at 18-18. Several Saintsmen, including Will (’13) and Wally (’11) Gonzalez were involved in the “Pro Kids” por-tion of the event. Tyler Connoly (’11) caddied for Mr. Isaak for two rounds. Also, Armando Favela (’05) and Loyola Chicago (’09) caddied for Coach Isaak during the competition. “The Saintsmen stood out for their enthusiasm and work ethic,” says Mr. Issak, “They proudly represented the school.” This year’s 38th annual was held at Rancho Santa Fe Country Club. The format of the event is Ryder Cup (match play) style with some partnership events fol-lowed by singles match play on Sunday. In match play, two players or two teams compete.

The player or team with the lowest score on a given hole wins that hole. The winner of the most holes during an 18- or 36-hole match is determined the winner. If players or teams tie a hole, the hole is halved and neither earns the hole.

APA’s Annual Tailgate PartyProves to Be a

Tasty AffairThe annual Saints Tailgate, hosted by the

hardworking Austin Parent Association, was held at Mesa College prior to Saints’

November 13th game against Patrick Henry and coincided with Senior Night. To greet those who showed up a little before 5 pm were our energetic cheerleaders who started off the evening’s events with excitement and flip signs pointing towards their very successful bake sale. The BBQ was catered by West Coast Catering where BBQ chicken and BBQ beef was offered with side dishes. The meal truly was delicious and our #1 biggest fan was Father Bob who made sure he went around and give both thumbs up to those in attendance. “We had a very lively turnout of Saints and OLP families,” reports Maggie Mudd and Fiona Theseira co-chairs, “Thank you to all who helped make this event a great success.”

Saints Chaplain Fr. Bob Gavotto, OSA (’55) has turned his love of oil painting into a project benefiting Hogar Infantil La Gloria,

an Augustinian sponsored orphanage in San Anto-nio de los Buenos, Mexico. Fr. Bob has turned eight of his original paint-ings into note cards that he wants to share with the Saints Community and at the same time aid the orphanage. The set of note cards are $15 per box and they make a wonderful Christmas gift and/or stocking stuffer. Fr. Bob had always wanted to try his hand at painting, and since 2000, has had the opportunity to do so during his vacation time. He attempts to complete two paintings per summer. Many of the paintings are places he has vis-ited while serving as a cruise chaplain. To date he’s completed more than a dozen 18x24 inch canvases of some of his favorite ports of call. The photo shows all attendees and those from San Diego included, Mr. Jim Horne, Mr. Ed Hearn, Fr. John Keller, Mr. Vladimir Bachynsky, Mr. Greg Hecht, Mrs. Jeannie Oliwa, and Mr. Dan Morrin.

of curriculum fashioned by requirements for University entrance. “Scuba, automotive mechanics, rugby, small busi-ness management, sailing, cooking, and digital photog-raphy are areas of the school curriculum not likely to position a student for entrance to a University, but our students have indicated they are not short on interest in these offerings. We want to help students develop a passion for learning, and sometimes that is difficult to accomplish in traditional college prep classes. Our In-tersession, although in its infancy, has sparked a curios-ity and inquisitiveness in our students that has energized campus and stimulated their desire to learn. “We look forward to the adventures ahead in year two of Intersession,” says Mr. Horne.

Wide World of Intersesssion—Intersession courses ranged from campus classrooms, to visiting Europe, plus many Saintsmen during last year’s mid-year program were afforded valuable in-ternships at various professional offices like Anthony Campos (’09) who interned at the dental offices of Dr. Joseph Cave.

Millennium(to date) of Success

Saints Varsity Football in Playoffs, AgainFacts: The headline may seem like bragging, but this is a newspaper and we deal in facts. The last time Saints had a losing season in varsity football was 1999. The football team has made the CIF playoffs each year in the new millennium. 2009 added to that roster of success by forging a winning season and returning to the CIF Playoffs winning its championship opening game 42-20 vs. a gallant Mar Vista High.

Usual Suspects: Yes, varsity football is a team sport, but when you check the scoring stats in the UT each week or view KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report, the same names keep popping up: QB Evan Crower, RB D’Andre Crowder, WR Dana Barbaro and Kicker Paul Hundley.

Mr. Quips—A KUSI reporter at the Mar Vista game asked who was “that” public address an-nouncer “the guy has a quip for everything.” Mr. One-Liner is Mr. Tom Cudal, Assistant Principal for Academics, who has been the Saints PA announcer for years.

Doc Returns—It was good to see long time Saints sports team doctor and alum Jerry Wisniew back on the sidelines after successfully battling prostrate cancer.

“Junior” Varsity: Class of 2011’s Crower, Crowder and Hundley will return next year.

Deadline: Because of printing deadlines Saints Scene will pick up the final CIF Playoff results next issue. However, www.SAHS.org has up-to-the-minute results and game day images: now!

Bottom Line: If you did it, then it isn’t bragging. Ten years of winning football is a credit to the community, the school, the students, coaches and the fans. Putting together a successful program involves countless individuals, who selfishly work as a team behind the scenes. When that hap-pens everyone wins.
