Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

GOSPEL MEDITATION

When you think of being Catholic, what do you think of? Perhaps you grew up with your only associations being fasting, nuns with rulers, and "Catholic guilt." Our faith can sometimes have the connotation of restriction and absence, not abundance. Who is God in your life? Is He the divine law-giver, the judge punishing the rule-breakers? These are certainly attributes of God. But the laws don't exist for themselves alone. They exist to help us love one anotheras God loves us. And this loving God is the author of abundance and joy.

Did you hear today's Gospel? "There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee." Here at this wedding, Jesus would perform "the beginning of his signs...and so reveal his glory." This first sign isn't a miraculous healing. He didn't raise someone from the dead. He kept a party going! "There were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons...the water...had become wine." The wine has run out. Jesus creates somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons to help his friend save face. We may not have such momentous miracles in our lives, but God is watching out for us. The string of green lights when you're running late. The sale on the replacement appliance you need. The friend who calls at just the right time. These are the little moments of God's abundance. We just need to look for them!

Not only does Jesus surprise, but the guests point out to their host: "You have kept the good wine until now." The divine wine is better than the earthly variety. God's goodness is better than what we can grasp at for ourselves. Isn't that how it always goes?

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTSThere are close to 7.6 billion people currently on earth. That is a lot of people! If you try to estimate how many people have collectively been born since the beginning of time, a good guess is 108 billion! It is hard to contemplate that many distinctly different human beings created by our God. In the midst of all those people, where do you and I fit? Can we really be created to make a difference in the world? One can feel very small and insignificant when reflecting on the numbers.

We render ourselves insignificant when we make the mistake of seeing ourselves as being just like everybody else. However, when looking at the numbers, how can one honestly think we are all the same? Another way we become insignificant is believing the lie that one person in the midst of so many does not have the power to make an impact. However, we all spend time reading books, watching movies, or listening to news about singular people who made all the difference in some part of the world. Imagine your own world without a few key people who have touched you and made a difference.

We are all created with unique gifts. We have those gifts that have been part of us from birth and those that have been imparted to us by the Holy Spirit. St. Paul tried to get the Corinthians to understand that reality when he explained to them the many gifts of the Spirit. Perhaps some of his audience back then thought they were insignificant. The message then remains the message today: God is counting on you to use what He has given you. If you don't, who will?

Thank you to all who support St. Rose School.

Last Friday St. Rose of Lima held a school Spelling Bee! To support our contestants, all pupils dressed in yellow and black.

Congratulations to all our contestants: James Boughman III and David Izzi (Grade 4), Claire Damiano and Delilah Tully (Grade 5), Talia Soares and Elaina Bartolini (Grade 6), Lauren Quattromani and Calista Aguinaldo (Grade 7), Grace Ritchotte and Laurel McMahon (Grade 8). Calista Aguinaldo and Grace Ritchotte are our winners with Claire Damiano as our alternate to represent St. Rose in the State Diocesan Spelling Bee! Congratulations and best of luck!

As it is mid-January, we are preparing for Catholic Schools’ Week which is quickly approaching. To “kick off ” this special week Grades 4 and 8 are attending the School Choice Rally along with our school Band. This is happening at the State House on Thursday, January 24th at 1pm so please feel free to join us and show your support! Our time at the State House will not only include attending the rally, but our Band is performing. We will be taking a guided tour of the State House! This will be an educational experience for all of our students and I want to thank Mrs. Moretti-Foggo, Mrs. Mederios, and Miss Liddle for arranging for us to attend.

Finally, our Open House is taking place Sunday, January 27th from 11am to 1pm. Please take the time to tour the school the parish supports and pass the word on about this special event. Registration opens to the public at Open House so I encourage all current families to secure a spot for September by please returning their re-registration form with payment before Open House.

I hope you all enjoy this weekend with your families. There are no classes today due to the long weekend.

Thank you to all our 2nd grade families for sharing Mass with us last weekend. The teacher’s and I are so proud of our 2nd graders for doing such a wonderful job with their Children’s Mass.

I want to thank you all for the encouragement you showed the 2nd grade at this Mass. I witnessed some wonderful moments between many of our parishes and the kids.

I would like to remind our Grades 6-10 classes that while you are attending Mass your behavior needs and should be respectful. This means NO cell phones, NO gum chewing, No talking with friends and definitely No horse play while going up to receive Communion. Please remember you are in the presence of Jesus during Mass and your behavior should reflect that.

Please Note that there is a schedule change! Due to the Stewardship Fair that will take place on January 27th there will be NO Faith Formation.

Faith Formation will resume on February 3rd.I hope to see you all on January 26th or 27th at the Stewardship Fair. I would love to see many of you join us in the Ministry of Faith Formation. You do not need to know everything about our faith to teach you only need to be willing to share your faith with the youth of our Parish. We are in need of more teachers during both our weekly Sunday morning program and our once a month program. If you are unable to join us for the Stewardship Fair but are interested in joining Faith Formation as a teacher or to help in anyway, please contact Father Matt or Mrs. Czepyha.

It is never too late to join the Youth Group! Anyone in grades 2-5 that is interested in having fun and spending

time with others while encouraging one another to be good people in our Faith are always welcome!

Our Youth Group will meet again on January 22nd at 5:30 pm. Everyone is welcome from grades 2-5 and you do not have to be a member of the Parish so bring a friend! You

are all welcome to join us at any time. At this meeting we will come up with some ideas for our next community project. For more information contact Mrs. Czepyha at

This year for Lent, our parish will publish a pamphlet of reflections for use during the season of prayer and preparation.  We are looking for parishioners to write short reflections!  You don't need any special training or skill, just a heart willing to share.

If you're interested email Angie ([email protected]) and she will send you a set of readings and a deadline for the reflection in order to put the book together.  These will be a beautiful reflection of our community and resource for all during the Lenten season!

Sts Rose, Clement, Francis, and Catherine Pray for Us!

We are blessed to have four saints to call our own in this little corner of Warwick RI. Rose,Clement, Francis, and Catherine lived

at different times, but each made a significant impact on the Church and the world. They were interesting characters who have a lot to teach us about life and about our faith. For instance: Two of our patrons went to interesting extremes to avoid marriage. Two of our patrons worked to heal major Schisms in the Church. One of our patrons modeled her life on the life of another one of our patrons. Three of our patrons were born into lives of privilege. One of our patrons designed the first Nativity set. One of our patrons was the first saint born in the Americas. One of our patrons was a disciple of St Peter. And one of our patrons helped to care for victims of the Black Plague. During the next four weeks in this Transitioning Together column, we’ll find out who did what as we meet the fourth Pope, the founder of the Franciscan order, the founder of Social Service in Peru, and one of the Doctors of the Church.

Join us for this year's Stewardship Fair after all Masses Jan. 26-27!

This is an opportunity to see most of the ministries in the parish and get to know them a bit while discerning where God might be calling you to serve.

Our monthly Coffee An' will also take place, hosted by the Stewardship Council.

Mother Teresa Outreach Ministry Join us to serve our friends in West Warwick and Oakland Beach on Friday, January 25th.
