Seventh Sunday of Easter

What an exciting time it has been in our parish these last several weeks!

After welcoming our newest Catholics at the Easter Vigil, we have continued to celebrate Easter and the resurrection for

six more weeks and along the way bore witness to young people taking ownership of their faith at Confirmation as well

as some very excited First Communicants. We have continued to serve our friends in need in Oakland Beach and West

Warwick with hot meals, clothing, and fellowship; celebrated the baptisms of several sweet infants; dined with refugee

families at St. Francis of Assisi; and learned about gun violence in Rhode Island and we can do to affect change. Our

parish community has continued to live out our baptismal calls in stewardship, including gathering for a potluck of

everyone involved in ministry in the church; we have enjoyed coffee and homemade treats after Mass together; wrapped

up Religious Education and RCIA for the year; and experienced the joy of a number of new families joining us at Sts.

Rose & Clement.

This list certainly isn’t exhaustive of all of the ministries going on at SSRC and I know it doesn’t even include all of the

events that have happened in our parish since Easter. But if you look at this list, what does it tell you about our parish?

As a community of faith, we are defined not only by what we say we believe, but by how we act on those beliefs that we

hear proclaimed every weekend in the Gospel and in the homily.

This time of Ascension post-resurrection and as we approach Pentecost is exactly when the mission of the church is

emerging. Jesus is clear with the disciples that he wants them to “Go into the whole world

and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk. 16:15) In fact, these are his last words before he departs the physical

world and ascends to heaven--his charge to those he left behind to fulfill the mission. The disciples and all of us are not

left alone to accomplish this, however. Jesus assures them and us:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,

and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

throughout Judea and Samaria,

and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

This is his promise, but it is a liminal moment here at the Ascension. The Holy Spirit has not yet descended at Pentecost

and the church as we know it is not quite born. As Jesus takes his leave, we are left in a “space between” where the

mission of the church begins to be formed and where our work as disciples really begins. Those mysterious figures in

white that appear after the Ascension stop the Galileans and ask “Why

are you standing there looking at the sky?” (Acts 1:11) They have to

be called away from looking, not for the wrong thing, but for looking

in the wrong place. God’s work doesn’t end with the Ascension, but

that call to love as God does and to teach and minister now resides

with those of us here on Earth. And that work is the work of love, the

work of accompaniment with the vulnerable and downtrodden, and

of proclamation of the Gospel. After all, “the one who descended is

also the one who ascended far above all the heavens.” (Eph. 4:10)

Would our mission here at Sts. Rose & Clement look recognizable to

Jesus as the early disciples? Our actions as a community reveal us to

be drawn to the margins, focused on welcoming new members, and

emphasizing stewardship as a way of living as disciples. I’d say that’s

pretty close to the work that Jesus himself did on earth and called us

to do likewise.

Page 5: SAINTS ROSE AND CLEMENT PARISH 111 Long Street, Warwick ... · 111 Long Street, Warwick Rhode Island 02886 Weekend Masses Saturday Vigil - 5:00 pm ... Mrs. Angie Howard-McParland,

From the Desk of Mrs. Izzi

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our St. Rose mothers and grandmothers! Last Friday I enjoyed meeting so many

grandmothers at Grandparents Day which was heavily attended

as grandparents play a big role in their grandchildren’s lives. I

also have the privilege of working with so many mothers who

despite their responsibilities outside the home still make the time

to volunteer countless hours at school. We see this on a daily basis

at St. Rose as many mothers’ volunteer to help in the cafeteria,

and last week many worked the register at our Bookfair. As we celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend a special thank you to all

our mothers and grandmothers for all they do especially giving

their children and grandchildren the gift of a Catholic education.

This weekend is another busy one at school as our drama

students’ performance of the Spring play Giants in the Sky is taking

place in the parish hall. Students have worked hard to prepare for

this event especially this past week as rehearsals went into the early evening. Our drama program is directed by Mr. JP

Ferragano and I want to thank him for his leadership.

As we are into the mid part of the last trimester students are

undertaking their final STAR assessment test for this school year.

Results will be sent home in print to parents soon. Progress

reports were sent home electronically this week via Rediker as

this provides parents with the information they need to monitor

their child’s(drens) academic performance. Students benefit when educators and parents collaborate together in a positive way. At

St. Rose our teachers work very hard and put in many hours

outside the classroom. Many of them are also mothers and

grandmothers and I wish them a Happy Mother’s Day too.

On Thursday we celebrated Mass at SS Rose and Clement with

the parish as it was Ascension Day. Our Grade 3 class hosted this

event and as usual our Chorus provided us with wonderful music.

One of the many special things that a Catholic education offers students is the opportunity to begin each morning with prayer

and celebrate Mass together. It truly brings the students as well as

the faculty and staff together as a community.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our mothers and grandmothers!

May 13, 2018

Mrs. Rachael CzephyaA Prayer for all Mothers,

Thank you, Lord, that you fill a mother’s heart with love,

That you have instilled in her very being the need to protect her children if

at all possible,

Thank you for giving her the gift of nurturing her children, of teaching

them, of comforting them,

for feeding them and making a safe place for them.

For guiding them to be all that God has created them to be.

Fill every mother with love, wisdom and endurance,

with strength and patience and joy.

Give them ability to forgive again and again.

Enable her to rely on You and call upon You, because You will give her all

she needs.

In Your precious and all powerful name, Amen

At 10:30 Mass we welcome back our First Communion students as we

honor Our Blessed Mother Mary. Thank you to all families that joined us

today and may your Mother’s day be filled with love and peace. May God

bless you all.

Send your kids on an impacting island adventure!

At Shipwrecked VBS, kids discover how Jesus rescues us through life's storms. Shipwrecked is filled with incredible

Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Sciency-Fun Gizmos, team-building games,

cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since

everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we'll help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!

Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us at Sail Away Sendoff for each day at 11:50, a daily exploration of our Jesus' rescue!

Once again, we will have a separate area for our younger VBS participants. Children who are ages 3-6 will join us in our Lower Deck Crews. Children ages 7-10 will join us in Upper Deck Crews.Children ages 11-13 are welcome to join us as Junior Crew leaders and those ages 14 and up are welcome to join us as Crew leaders. Mark these dates on your calendar to join us at Shipwrecked VBS! June 25-June 29th.

If you have not registered, you still can. Drop by the office for a
