The spring semester is the most exciting semester for intercollegiateathleticshereatSantaFe.Fourofourfiveteams are challenging for conference, state and national championshipsandbeforethesemesterisover,allfivewill be signing the next class of Santa Fe Saints!
Our men’s and women’s basketball teams, softball team and baseballteamlooktobuildoffthesuccessoftheSaintsVolleyballteam that won the Mid-Florida Conference Championship in its inaugural season last fall. It was a remarkable accomplishment for Head Coach Nick Cheronis, assistant coaches Benavia Jenkins and Nichole Halbert and the players.
I urge you to come to the games and cheer on the Saints. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the level of play you will see.
And the SF Athletics Department has plenty of “hands on” things for you to do as well. Be in control of your health and wellness with regular visits to the SF Fitness Center. It is free of chargeforallactiveSFstudents,facultyandstaff,andhasalltheequipmentyouneedtobeginapersonal wellness program or build on one you may already have. SFIntramuralSportswillalsobeactiveinthespringwithofferingsofbasketballandsoccerleading the way. The2014seasonfortheSantaFeSaintswascomprisedof,aswe’veseenforthelast10years,brilliantplay.TheSaintswonthe Mid-Florida Conference championship for the ninth time, advanceddeepintothestatetournament,andwon36gamesormorefortheninthtimeinthelast10years. The2015versionofthe Saints will return four players from last year’steam,includingstarpitcherMaddyPeres.Pereswent15-8in162.2inningspitchedlastseason,strikingout164witha1.55ERA.
BeriScottreturnstoanchortheinfieldatshortstop,leftfielderTorriBethel is back for her sophomore year, and Caroline Whittington will takecareofanoutfieldpositionforanotherseason. Atotalof15newcomersjointhefoldastheSaintsmakearunata10thMFCtitlein11yearswhentheyopenupattheJUCOKickoffClassicinClearwater,Fla.onJanuary31.SFwillfaceoffagainst Pensacola State, Wallace State-Hanceville, and Miami-Dade College all in one day, giving every player on the roster a

chance to shine. Wallace State is a familiar foe as the Saints have faced them in the national tournament during both of their appearances.SFfinishedrunners-uptoWallacein2008. TheSaintswillstartconferenceplayMarch10,playinga24-game schedule to decide the champion. The top four teams in the conference advance to the state tournament in Vero Beach May1-3. DDuring his eight years at the helm of the Santa Fe Saints baseball team, Head Coach Johnny Wiggs has achieved much success, includingfiveMid-FloridaConferencetitles,anFCSAAStateTitle,andarunner-upfinishattheJUCOWorldSeries. This year, Coach Wiggs and the Saints will look to continue thatsamesuccesswhentheytakethefieldonJanuary30inTampa against Hillsborough Community College in the season opener. The following day, the Saints will open at home and give theirfansthefirstglimpseofthe2015Saints. SF has plenty of reasons to be optimistic about this season, thefirstbeingstarinfielderJaredShouppe.Shouppehasseenhislast two seasons cut short by injury. The handful of games he has appeared in, and his showing during fall ball, has shown his ability to hit and hit for power. He is already being courted by upper division colleges and is expected to be an SEC/ACC caliber player. Also returning to help give the Saints some veteran leadership iscatcherEvanBarnes,infielderMikeCastilla,infielderChipperAndzel,andinfielder/pitcherWalkerBurgess.
Newcomers that are expected to make an immediate impact are highly regarded catcher Matt Allen, and pitchers Austin Goss, Tom Watson, and Trent Johnson. With all the newcomers on the roster, there will be plenty of opportunities for every player on the roster to make their mark leading up to Mid-Florida Conference playMarch4andastheycontinuetheirmarchtowardsthestatetournament in Lakeland in May.

TTo say the inaugural season of Santa Fe Volleyball was a success wouldbeavastunderstatement.In2014,SantaFeCollegeplayedtheirfirstseasonoforganizedintercollegiatevolleyball,smashingallexpectationsbyrecordinga31-7record.TheSaintswontheMid-FloridaConferencechampionshipandfinishedjusttwomatchesshy of a National Tournament berth. Coach Nick Cheronis was named the MFC Co-Coach of the Year. Sophomore Ruth Harrington earned FCSAA First Team All-State honors, and she along with Kaylin Powell, Farah Rajaee, and Savannah Young were all named to the All Mid-Florida Conference team.
The Saints will lose only two players from their MFC championshipteamin2015–SavannahYoungandRuthHarrington. Although the loss of Young and Harrington are big shoestofill,CoachCheroniswillhavearosterfullofexperienceplaying in high-pressure situations and a group of players that know how to win. The2015Saints’volleyballseasonwillopeninAugust26,while the state tournament will take place in Jacksonville early November.

Would you like access to a fully functional gym free of charge? A deal this good almost sounds too good to be true. Now is a great time to save some money because the Santa Fe College Fitness Center is free for all currently enrolled SF students, faculty andstaff.AllyouneedisyourvalidSantaFeCollegeID. TheFitnessCenteroperatesfrom6:30a.m.to9p.m.MondaythroughThursday,and6:30a.m.to6p.m.onFriday.Itisclosedonweekendsanddays when the college is closed. It’s located in Building V (Gymnasium) on North Road on the Northwest Campus. The Fitness Center and Santa Fe Athletics also host Zumba and Yoga classes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both are also free of charge and held in Building V. Mr. Marshall Blair manages the Fitness Center and oversees the state-of-the-artfacility.Thefacilityoffersthreeseparaterooms:acardioroom,a free-weights room and a Cybex machines room. ThecardioroomconsistsofaStairMaster,fivestationarybikes,sixtreadmillsandfourellipticalmachines.Thetreadmillsofferedbythe Fitness Center allow you to focus more on your lower body while the elliptical trainers give you a total body workout with dual action handlebarsforyourarmsandfootpedalsforyourlegs.Thebikesoffera low impact way of getting the exercise you need without putting too much strain on the lower body.
Thefree-weightsroomconsistsoftwoflatbenches,aninclinebenchand decline bench, a shoulder press bench, two cable crossovers, rubberizedweights,dumbbells,asquatrack,twolegpressmachinesandothervariousfree-weightequipment. TheCybexroomhasatotalof30machinesthatcanbeusedforeverymusclegroup.Italsooffersstretchingmats,medicine/exerciseballsandmultiplelegandabdominalmachines.TheCybexequipmentisthemostinnovativeinitsfieldandofferscardiovascularexercisesaswellasstrength training. The machines are very user friendly and are great for bothfirsttimeandexperiencedgymusers.
THE SANTA FE COLLEGE FITNESS CENTER IS FREE FOR ALL CURRENTLY ENROLLED SF STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF. ALL YOU NEED IS YOUR VALID SANTA FE COLLEGE ID. TheSantaFeCollegeFitnessCenteralsoofferstwoindoorracquetballcourts, basketball courts in the main gym, walking trails, and beach volleyball courts. There is also a locker room for both men and women (with lockers available to rent).

Intramuralsportsarestartingforthe2015schoolyearandnowisthe time to get involved. This particular sports program at Santa Fe College is a great way to meet new people, compete against others in a competitive but friendly environment, and a fun way to get exercise. Sign-ups take place online at imleagues.com. Fromthefallthroughthespringterm,SFoffersawidevarietyofintramuralsports,including7-on-7flagfootball,soccer,basketball,weightliftingcompetitions,racquetballtournamentsandmore.
TO PARTICIPATE IN INTRAMURALS, EACH PLAYER MUST BE A CURRENT SF STUDENT AND SIGN UP AT IMLEAGUES.COM WITH THEIR SF ID NUMBER AND A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS. Recently, Santa Fe College paired up with the University of Florida toofferstudentsachancetocompeteinanumberofdifferentUFintramuralsports,includingbeachvolleyball,softball,tennis,4-on-4football and more. “Intramuralsportsareagreatwayforstudents,facultyandstaffto play sports and test their skills in a fairly competitive setting,” said Intramural Coordinator Scott Jamison. “We encourage everyone to get involved and come play one or more sports with us.”
FallintramuralsstartinearlySeptemberandinclude7-on-7flagfootball,soccer,weightlifting,yoga,andaracquetballtournament.Flag football takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and soccer plays MondaysandWednesdays.Eachsporthasmorethan150studentscompetingon10-plusteams.Inadditiontofallsports,soccerandbasketballareofferedinthespring,withgamesbeginninginMarchafterspring break. Soccer, the only sport to run during both the fall and spring terms, competes on Mondays and Wednesdays while basketball is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Finally, bench press and leg press competitions will also be held throughoutthefallandspringsemestersaswellasaracquetballtournament, with the dates to be determined. A schedule of events will be posted on the intramural website at imleagues.com. Intramural participants can also stay updated about Santa Fe College intramurals on Facebook by searching “Santa Fe College Athletics,” or following on Twitter at twitter.com/SF_Athletics for live weather updates and more. To participate in intramurals, each player must be a current SF student and sign up at imleagues.com with their SF ID number and a valid email address. You can sign up as a team or a free agent. CCoach Chanda Stebbins and the Santa Fe Saints women’s basketball team recently started Mid-Florida Conference play. Although the results have not been what the team expected, the Saints have plenty of time left to still reach the postseason with nine conference games to play. Through18games,theSaintshavethreeplayersindoublefiguresledbyfreshmanSonyaFranklin’s10.7pointspergame.GainesvilleHighSchoolgraduatesDejaMcPhee(10.4)andKaylaLovett(10.3)alsoaveragedouble-digitpointsforSF.

SophomoreTatianaManuelisfifthinthenationinblocks,averagingfourpercontest.OnJanuary14againstDaytonaState,ManuelsettheSFcareerrecordwhenshenotchedthe134thblockofhercareer,breakingthepreviousmarkof130setbyLeandraKingfrom2009-2011.
The Saints have the talent to make a run through the Mid-Florida Conference. The regular season comes to an end February 21andthestatetournamenttakesplaceinOcala,Fla.thefirstweekin March. OffthecourttheSaintshavebeenbusymakinganimpactinthe community. Deja McPhee was recently named a “Woman of Distinction”, an honor bestowed upon just a select few women from the Santa Fe community each year. On February 14theSaintswillhosttheir“ThinkPink”game,helpingtobringawareness to breast cancer, and also to honor cancer survivors andthosewhohavelosttheirlives.OnFebruary21theywillhost a canned food drive in connection with Catholic Charities “Weekend Backpack” program, an event the Saints volunteered at earlier in the year. TThe Santa Fe Saints men’s basketball team accomplished much throughthefirstpartofthe2014-15season,winning12gamesthroughJanuary10,whiledroppingjustseven.ThekeystretchoftheseasonwillstartJanuary17whenMid-FloridaConferenceplay opens. SF will play nine conference games, with the top two teams advancing on to the FCSAA State Tournament in Ocala, Fla. in early March. LeadingthewaythroughthefirstportionoftheseasonwassophomoreMorrisMarshall.The6-foot-2guardisaveragingateamhigh16.2pointspergame,andatthebeginningoftheseason signed a letter of intent with the University of Wyoming. SophomoreguardMichaelSanchezisscoringata14point-per-gameclipthroughJanuary10,androundingoutthedoublefigurescorersisAllenBaezat11.7. BrandonWilliamsleadsontheinterior,averaging7.1pointsand8.5reboundspergame.
Although shorthanded, and down to just eight active players due to a litany of injuries, Coach Chris Mowry and the Saints will continuetogivetheirbesteverygameastheyfightthroughtheMid-Florida Conference. TheregularseasonconcludesonFebruary21,withtheMFCTournament and FCSAA State Tournament following.
THE SAINTS WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE THEIR BEST EVERY GAME AS THEY FIGHT THROUGH THE MFC.
