Dear Faithful: A BLESSED AND Spiritually Rewarding NEW ECCLESIAS-TICAL YEAR...September 2013! “BUILDING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST” is our Spiritual Parish Theme for this New Ecclesiastical Year..for all Church Members, Church Organizations and Parish Ministries. It’s not only an Orthodox Christian reminder for us all; but a spiritual challenge to uphold and strengthen our love and commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church! Let’s be honest...we sometimes let the worldly agenda and daily way of life influence our thoughts and actions in Parish Life. All that we say, do, and offer in the Commu-nity reflects our love and loyalty to our Lord and Savior. Uplift His Message and bless your soul these days ahead. When we love...we love Jesus Christ. When we curse and divide the Body of Believers...we greatly offend Jesus Christ. Let’s be truly aware of our actions and offer our grateful hearts and spiritual obedience to our Loving Master and Heavenly Father. There is great joy and reward for us all! Gather your family and loved ones and worship in the Church with JOY, LOVE and PEACE. Remember: “BUILDING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST” is a perfect bless-ing. In His Vineyard,

Rev. Fr. James Dokos PROTOPRESBYTER FJD/jem

QUESTION: Our Priest is always reminding us that every time we enter the Church; we should be light-ing a candle in the Narthex. I thought we lit a candle on Sundays or at the Liturgies. Tell me? (Dena of Michigan)

ANSWER: Your Priest shares with you the teaching and practice of the Holy Orthodox Church. When we enter the Church to pray alone, attend the Divine Liturgy and worship services, the Sac-raments (Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals, Para-clesis, etc.) we enter the Church by means of the Narthex...light your candles, reverence the Holy Icons and enter within. Never...Never do we just walk in the Church doors and go to our pew. I see this happen-ing; especially at Sacraments. It is wrong and disrespectful to God. Offer your gift, light a candle and enter faithfully and in His Love and Light. Jesus Christ is the Light of the World! Our Lord says: “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.” (John 8:12) QUESTION: My sister recently had an abortion and the family just learned the news with horror. My aunt accused her of murder. Is this a little too forceful? The fetus didn’t know what was hap-pening. (confidential) ANSWER: ABORTION IS MURDER no matter what cir-cumstances took place. Your sister decided not only to “get rid of” the problem, but van-quished an innocent life. It may have solved an immediate problem for a moment, but a beautiful life was denied the right to enjoy life’s journey. Surely this is unacceptable to God and His Church.

ANSWER (cont.) Invite your sister to meet with her Parish Priest so that prayer and confession can be the beginning of her personal repentance. Abortion is a pitiful, ugly and selfish act against life. Repentance is surely in order. I do pray for your sister that she may be re-stored in her faith, but I lament for the Church’s loss of an innocent member of His Kingdom. Abortion is not a choice...it’s a death sentence that haunts one for eternity. Seek another avenue please.

QUESTION: Is the devil or evil one a reality in our Christian walk? Can’t we just love God and see the goodness of life? (Catherine) ANSWER: We must love God and yes...we must see what is good in this life; but it is our responsi-bility to protect and defend all that is holy and sacred to God. I Peter 5:8 reads: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”. QUESTION: Repentance is a word we hear so often in the Orthodox faith. Please note for me examples where we experience forgiveness through the Church. (Petros) ANSWER: We experience total forgiveness in the Sacra-ment of Holy Confession. An Orthodox Chris-tian also experience examples of forgiveness in personal PRAYER, in the petitions and sup-plication prayers in our Church Services. For-giveness is also found in the Sacrament of Holy Unction and also with receiving Holy Communion...the Servant of God receives the Body and Blood of Christ for the “FORGIVENESS OF SINS” and eternal life.

Parish Council News On September 8 we will once again have our “Divine Liturgy at the Farm” but with a pleasant twist. The Liturgy will be followed by a mini-fest of souvlakia, salad, rice and sweets. Many thanks to Christy Gouletas for organizing this. This mini-fest is a preview of the treats to come next summer when we once again hold a Festival. Hopefully you all have heard of this by the time you read this and have signed up. It should be a great time! Chris Atsaves has resurrected the SS Peter and Paul Golf Outing which will be held September 23 at Mission Hills Country Club. You can come and be a “Tiger” or just come and eat and share the fellowship. Details have been mailed to you or check with the Office. See you all there! From October 2 through 6 the Metropolis will be holding its Clergy/Laity Assembly in Sioux City, Iowa. Father Jim, Mary Ann Langas, Steve Koulogeorge and I will be attending as delegates from SS Peter and Paul. If you have any questions or sug-gestions please see one of us and we will carry your ideas to Iowa. While there we will get a chance to say hello to Fr. Tobias who will be the Proistaminos there. Keep the date of November 24 open for the fall Parish General Assembly. By now you have all said goodbye to Father Tobias and wished him well in his new assignment at Holy Trinity Parish in Sioux City, Iowa. You also have welcomed the newly ordained Fr. Panagiotis Boznos. The Council has been busy moving to correct several fire and insurance violations. None are life threatening but pose the usual dilemma of meeting government regu-lations and providing funding. You should see some of these minor corrections in the near future. Please keep the less fortunate and struggling in your prayers and your hands on your wallets to open them for busboys, the homeless, the Salvation Army or any others who are needy. Faithfully, Jim Gottreich Parish Council President [email protected]

The Saints Peter and Paul Philoptochos Society will mark the beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year with their Annual Stewardship Reception. Increasing our member- ship is one of our many goals, and also our goal is to encourage our parishioners to get involved in the programs and ministries of the Philoptochos Society. Our Philoptochos Chapter commits to many Philanthropies, both local and inter- national, and our Philanthropy Fund assists families in need within our community. On the Metropolis Philoptochos Level, we commit to the Metropolis Philanthropy Fund, Metropolis Soup Kitchen, Junior Olympics, the Oratorical Festival of Chicago, the Greek American Nursing Home in Wheeling, and much more. We invite all of the ladies and gentlemen of the Parish to join Philoptochos. You may be a fully active member or give as much time as you can. Your help is needed.

Youth Corner SS Peter & Paul Youth & Family Ministries With the beginning of September comes the beginning of a new Ecclesiastical Year, and the return of our Youth Programs at SS. Peter & Paul. Both Fr. Jim and I are extremely excited about all the programs, and about engaging the younger members of our parishas they grow in faith, fellowship, and love. We hope that every young person in our parish will be involved, as we have many great things planned for this year. On, Saturday, September 21st we will be having a barbeque following the Annual Blessing of the Animals (Prayer of St. Modesto of Jerusalem) at 11am. We hope that all the members of our youth ministries and their families will be present for some good food, fellowship, and a chance to get reacquainted with the youth programs of our parish. Ministries

HOPE: The Hope Group is our parents and toddler group, with a focus on providing young children with a safe play environment, as well as a place for mothers and fathers to share fel-lowship and support with their peers. The Hope Group will be meeting MONDAYSfrom 9:30am to 10:30am starting with our first meeting on SEPTEMBER 16th. Faith/Love/Joy: As children grow in the Church we want to introduce them to the beauty of our faith. In the Faith (K&1st), Love (2nd&3rd), and Joy (4th&5th) we build off the fellowship of Hope with craft and athletic activities, and also add age appropriate lessons about the Ortho-dox Church. Faith, Love, and Joy will meet the FIRST TUESDAY of every month from 6:00pm to 8pm, starting with our first meeting OCTOBER 1st. Jr. GOYA: Junior High (6th-8th)can be fun, exciting, and a little intimidating all at the same time. What better time is there to solidify our relationships with each other as Orthodox Chris-tians, and most importantly, with Christ and His Church? The Jr. GOYA is a place of fellow-ship, fun, and learning; as our 6th through 8th graders begin to mature in their faith. We will meet the SECOND TUESDAY of every month from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, starting with our first meeting SEPTEMBER 10th. GOYA:As High School students enter young adulthood they will encounter many wonderful opportunities; college, jobs etc. GOYA provides a fun environment to connect with friends, which is so vital during this time of life, and a theological grounding in our Orthodox Faith that will help these young adults in the face of challenges. We will meet the FOURTH TUESDAY of every month from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, starting with our first meeting on SEP-TEMBER 24th. + Fr. Panagiotis

Coffee Connection: Connecting in Faith and Fellowship

Coffee Connection is a parish education program that is open to all interested adults. The theme for this year is, “Understanding What We Believe: The Creed as an Expression of Our Faith” and will focus on both theological topics, as well as current social issues. The Ni-cene Creed provides the essential truths of our Orthodox faith, and each session will examine how we can apply those truths in our everyday lives. With the blessings and encouragement of Fr. Jim, veteran teachers Helen Theodoropoulos, Randa Anderson, John Colis, and Doreen De-Sent will be leading the discussions which promise to be informative, engaging, and relevant for all. On designated Sundays, adults will meet in the Youth Room under the gym immediately fol-lowing Holy Communion until 11:40 a.m. The setting is ideal—we’ll gather in the youth room kitchen for a cup of coffee and to chat with other parishioners. It’s an opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with old friends. Offered in this “mini coffee hour” will be a selection of educational handouts about our Orthodox Faith. We also will have recommended reading available to peruse (and possibly to purchase in the Church bookstore). Once all are gathered, we will move into the adjacent room for a presentation and discussion on the day’s topic. The discussion is a chance to share ideas and information, as well as get to know one another a little bit better. So let’s connect in Faith and Fellowship! There is no registration required for this program, so feel free to attend any or all sessions that interest you. Be sure to check the weekly bulletin and the ”Coffee Connection” page of the parish website (www.ssppglenview.org) for updates on the specific topics to be discussed. In addition, be sure to check regularly the “Educational Mate-rials” portion of the Coffee Connection web page for interesting reading materials and re-sources. Below are the dates through December:
