Annual Fall Appeal Started All registered parishioners have been sent a le er for the Annual Fall Appeal. This important once-a-year financial request allows the parish to balance its budget and progress towards fixing and upgrading many areas of the parish. If you are not registered and therefore did not receive a mailing, there are envelopes marked “2020 Fall Appeal” at the doors of the Church. As of Monday, November 30th there have been 63 gi s totaling $22,915.00. Gi s range from $5.00 to $3,000.00. Thank you for your generosity. The appeal will run un l the end of December.

  • Hat and Glove (Mi en and Scarf) Drive Underway For Advent to Support Chris an Community Ac on The Social Ac on Commi ee of the Parish is conduc ng the annual hat, scarf, mi en and glove drive to support those in our community in need. In the past this program was adver sed through Advent Giving Trees where parishioners were able to take a tag and fill the request of the gi but this year it is streamlined. There will be no tags and no trees just the request to consider do-na ng new winter hats, gloves, scarfs or mi ens before December 13. The Chris an Community Ac on, where our dona ons will be delivered are looking for items for children from babies to

teens. Currently the group is looking for items that will fit: 10 teens (4 male and 6 female), 7 pre-teens (3 boys and 4 girls), 9 youth (5 boys and four girls), 6 children (2 boys and 4 girls), and 5 babies (3 boys and 2 girls). If you could label your dona on as to the size, it would be helpful. There are no adult sizes listed above but any dona ons for adults will be donated to those adults in need. Please leave your dona on in the big red bin located in the Church and the parish social ac on commi ee will package up the gi s and deliver to the organiza on for distribu on. Thank you for your generosity and kindness!

The Figures of Advent The scriptures of Advent reacquaint us with several key figures in the Bible. All of the proph-ecies of the season are significant, but the ones that stand out come from Isaiah. The prophet Isaiah wrote 770 years before the birth of Jesus yet he foretells the coming of Jesus, (Is 11:1-10) “a shoot from the stump of Jesse, miraculously born to a virgin.” Jesse is the father of King David, the greatest king of Israel and it is from the family line of David that Joseph is connect-ed. As a result the prophecy comes true, the King of kings is born to the line of Jesse and it is Jesus. In his wri ngs, the prophet Isaiah also gives the people hope. Hope is something we need in and out of the Advent season. There is hope that God will intervene in our difficul es (Is 64:1-4), God comforts Jerusalem and the glory of the Lord will be revealed (Is 40:1-5), and Isaiah even iden fies Jesus by referring to him as Emmanuel, “God is with us.”

John the Bap st is another key figure in the Advent readings during Mass. John the Bap-st prefigures Jesus in many ways; mysterious events led up to both births, the two pregnant

mothers visited and greeted one another and miraculous signs heralded the births of both children. John grows to preach about the coming of the Lord while issuing a call to repent-ance and then John suffered a cruel, premature death at the hands of an authority both in-trigued and fearful of him. In birth, life, and death, John prefigured Jesus. The third great figure of this season is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Advent includes two of her celebra ons, the Immaculate Concep on and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Immaculate Concep on on December 8th (Mass celebrated at 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m..) celebrates the belief that Mary lived completely without sin, even from the moment of her concep on. God thus made her a worthy vessel to receive the Word made flesh. On December 12th the Church celebrates Mary’s

appearance to Juan Diego in Mexico, where she delivered her own message of deliverance and hope. In addi on, scriptures of this season highlight Mary’s life with the annuncia on by the angel Gabriel, Joseph’s encounter with an angel in a dream, the visita on to Elizabeth and Mary’s saying yes to God in his plan for salva on. Three important figures are highlighted in the Advent season, three people who show and live out salva on history, the history that we come to thank God for and celebrate with great joy and happiness at Christmas.
