Special Second Collection for Ecuador Earthquake Relief

Sunday, May 15, 2016

The situation in Ecuador after the recent earthquake continues to worsen. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families, as well as to those struggling to recover from this disaster. But, of course, we need to help the people of Ecuador and assist them as soon as possible. On the weekend of Sunday, May 15th, we will take up a special collection to assist in this relief work.

From Monsignor Tom’s Desk Church leaders from around the world hailed the tone of mercy in Pope Francis’ recent apostolic exhortation, “Amoris Laetitia” (The Joy of Love), but they cautioned against a hurried reading of the document. It is an “encyclopedic” document and, like all such documents, much of its most valuable content runs the risk of being bypassed by a preoccupation with one or two of its aspects. It contains no new rules or norms. However, it encourages careful review of everything related to family life and ministry and greater attention to the attitude and approach used when giving the Church’s teaching and ministering to those who don’t fully live that teaching. What is new about this exhortation is its tone: it calls on all ministers “to be warm and caring in the way they

deal with people in difficult circumstances.” There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach and shepherds are urged to adapt Church teachings from the 2014 and 2015 Synods of the Bishops on family life to their particular circumstances. For example, different cultural understandings of marriage within the U.S. would give the Church here different challenges to those faced by churches in other parts of the world. As Pope Francis says, every situation is different and needs to be approached with love, mercy and openness of heart. People looking for “juicy” headlines would be disappointed. Pope Francis is not giving individual consciences the ultimate authority to decide their spiritual state, as media pundits and liberal theologians maintain, but is trying to help us priests to be better pastors, especially when dealing with family matters. The exhortation was meant for people to read and ponder and the document could help priests and bishops realize that “nobody is beyond the care of the Church.” It touches all the realities that a family might experience. Pope Francis is telling us that we have to help people form correctly-informed consciences. What he is doing with this exhortation is teaching people to better understand what the beautiful vision of real Christian marriage is. It’s an approach that many pastoral agents and priests have been promoting for a long time, but it now gives stronger theological foundations. Despite what the uninformed may try to assert, Pope Francis is not allowing divorced-and-remarried persons to determine whether or not their first marriage is valid. Rather, he is teaching priests to be “tactful” and “sensitive” in explaining to divorced-and-remarried couples why they might not be able to receive Holy Communion without an annulment, and to get them to “come to understand” what that means. “Amoris Laetitia” addresses many topics regarding marriage and family life, from the Biblical foundation of the family to reflections of St. Paul on charity in his first Letter to the Corinthians, to practical advice for married couples. It invites us to take the teachings of the Bible and the Church very seriously while welcoming in a true and realistic way couples experiencing hardships. The lengthy document is full of contemplative vistas but also down-to-earth practical wisdom that could come only from long pastoral experience of spouses and their families. It moves constantly between the ideal and the real. Chapter 8 of this document deals with “accompanying, discerning and integrating pastoral care” for those in irregular family situations. Contrary to assumptions that it demonstrates a change in Church teaching on reception of Holy Communion by divorced-and-remarried persons, the document upholds existing Church teaching. As with any other papal exhortation, it must be interpreted within the context of the texts that have gone before it. It builds strongly on St. John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation on the role of the Christian family in the modern world, “Familiaris Consortio,” following the 1980 Synod on the Family. In that exhortation, St. John Paul II had written that the Sacrament of Penance, which would open the way to the reception of the Holy Eucharist, is possible for the divorced-and-remarried only when they 'live in complete continence'. Pope Francis makes the “classic distinction” between an “objective state of a situation” and “subjective culpability.” Since there are three conditions necessary for a sin to be mortal: 1. serious matter, 2. sufficient reflection, and 3. full consent of the will –sometimes people enter into adulterous unions without really knowing Church teaching on this. Sometimes people even enter into these unions without having a full knowledge of what marriage is. A pastor’s job is to lead them to live in accord with Church teaching. It is the priest’s job to help form a person’s conscience so they can correctly determine if they are in this state or not. We have to accompany the people where they are in their moral life, and help them move forward. That’s going to be different for every particular circumstance, and the ways to apply pastoral care can often be “circumstantial” and “murky.” Even so, the pastor tries to “lead” the couple so that they may understand what they can and cannot do. Any passage of the exhortation must be interpreted in light of existing Church teachings. For example, we need to consult and read the “Declaration Concerning the Admission to Holy Communion of Faithful Who are Divorced and Remarried,” which is cited in Amoris Laetitia. The exhortation “insists that we have to deal always with the facts, however messy they may be; we have to be in touch with the reality of marriage and the family, not clinging to some romanticized sense of what the family should be. A genuinely pastoral approach to marriage and the family begins with the facts. Some people will be disappointed that it is not full of black-and-white solutions; but, it embraces the papal vision of the Church being a field hospital, treating the wounded and attending to those with needs. The Pope has underscored “…the importance of confession” throughout his papacy. Pope Francis refers “in the first place” to the Sacrament of Penance, and then to Holy Communion. This order points to Church teaching of reception of Holy Communion only after one’s sins have been forgiven in the Sacrament of Penance and they are in the state of grace. Finally, it is not just a collection of separated chapters. As Pope Francis says, “you can’t whiz through it. It needs reflection.” It is “a precious tool, a guide for pastoral workers accompanying couples. It has particular focus on the need to walk with those who feel excluded and to let everyone know that they are loved by God and that that love is a tender love, but also a love that challenges us all to change.”

4.4 Million pledged and RISING!

Dear Parishioners,

I am writing to you today because our parish needs your help.

As you know from previous mailings, parish bulletins, and brief presentations at Masses, we are engaged in a special anniversary capital campaign to raise $6.5 million with which to renovate and expand our school and to expand and enhance our church.

To date, we have successfully received just over $4.4 million from 496 of our parish and school families. The good news is that the average contribution is in excess of $8,400; The best news, however, is that the goal can easily be surpassed if the remaining non-contributing 2,000 families respond to this appeal and support the campaign with a generous contribution of $1,000 or more.

According to Diocesan policy, we need to have 100% of the funds gifted/pledged and 70% in cash in order to “put the shovel in the ground.” I urge you to make your special gift to St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church & School before the end of May so that the renovation and expansion projects, so vital to the future of our school and church, can be initiated as quickly as possible.

Please pick up a blue marketing folder located at the credenza at the back of Church at your convenience. Please give prayerful reflection to making a contribution to the best of your ability. You are reminded that you may take up to 5 years to fulfill a pledge of $10,000 or more; up to 3 years to fulfill a pledge less than that amount. Remember, however, that immediate fulfillment of pledges will help us to reach the 70% cash goal needed to initiate our projects sooner than later.

We look forward to receiving your campaign contribution and adding your name to the long list of parish families that have already made a sacrificial gift to benefit St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church & School.

If you have questions or would like to meet to discuss a campaign gift, please do not hesitate to contact, Director of Stewardship & Development Julie Ott at 561-276-6892 x 308 or [email protected].

Your gift will make a difference for our parish and will create a long legacy of future Catholic leaders in our community.

THE SCHOOL { our needs }

While the faith, academics, and excellence of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic School has remained strong for the last 60 years, the building’s infrastructure and school facilities are much the same as they were in 1955, even with the great attention and care from our beloved maintenance staff. Although the facilities have served us well over the years, the time has come to complete a comprehensive renovation for St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic School. The Living Our Faith, Building Our Future Capital Campaign will complete our vision for the future by improving the overall learning environment, increasing our long-term financial stability and the appearance and functionality of the campus that promotes our Catholic Identity.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE- You Can Pledge Now!

As we mentioned in previous newsletters, it is Diocesan policy that we must have 100% of the funds pledged and 70% in cash before we can “put the shovel in the ground” and proceed with our building and renovation initiatives that will so positively impact parish life.

If every remaining parish family that has not given to the campaign made a sacrificial gift of $3,000(either a one-time gift or $1,000 for 3 years) not only would all the school and church building and renovation initiatives be completed, but more than $2 million would be added to the parish/school endowment fund! If every remaining parish family gave just $1,000: either a one-time or $333 a year for 3 years, which is less than $1 a day, the campaign would definitely exceed its goal of $6.5 million.

Time is of the essence in order to build our school! For those just learning about the campaign, still pondering what amount to give, or those who have not yet pledged, there is no better time than NOW. Every gift counts! To learn more about our campaign, please visit www.stvincentferrer.com/capital-campaign/ for information.

The Holy Year of Mercy began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, 2015. This liturgical feast day recalls God’s action from the very beginning of mankind’s history. After the sin of Adam and Eve, God did not wish to leave humanity alone in the throes of evil so He turned His gaze to Mary, holy and immaculate in love (Ephesians 1:4), choosing her to be the Mother of man’s Redeemer. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responded with the fullness of mercy. We see the fullest expression of Divine Mercy in the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, bringing us new life and removing all that separates us from our destiny – communion with God. “His mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 136) The Holy Father fervently desires that this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy be, “for all believers a true moment of encounter with the Mercy of God…a living experience of the closeness of the Father.” Pope Francis outlined the overall spirit and intentions for the Holy Year in his 28-page papal bull titled, “Misericordiae Vultus” or “The Face of Mercy”. A bull is a papal letter or document referring to the most important documents issued by a pope including canonizations of saints, dispensations, and dogmatic pronouncements. “Merciful like the Father" is the motto Pope Francis chose for the Holy Year, coming from Luke 6:36, "Be merciful just as your Father is merciful." There are three inter-related elements essential to living this Jubilee Year fully. First, we are called to make a pilgrimage. Symbolic of the road each of us walks in life, Catholics are encouraged to make a pilgrimage to walk through a designated Holy Door

of Mercy. Each of the four major basilicas of Rome have a Holy Door: Saint Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major. The Holy Doors in Rome are only opened during the Holy Year and remain closed during all other years. This rite of the opening of the Holy Door illustrates symbol- ically the idea that, during the Jubilee, the faithful are offered an “extraordinary pathway” towards salvation. While most Jubilees have been focused on calling pilgrims to Rome, Pope Francis has widely expanded this Jubilee, asking dioceses throughout the world to open their own Holy Door at a Cathedral or significant shrines and even chapels in every prison. In the Diocese of Palm Beach, the Holy Door of Mercy is located at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens. Pope Francis said by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, which is a symbol of the “gate of the sheepfold” who is Jesus (John 10:9), he hopes it will be an impetus to conversion and offer each participant the opportunity to “open wide” the doors of their hearts to forgive and be merciful to others. “The holy year won’t be very effective if the doors of our heart do not let Christ enter,” Pope Francis said.

Jesus realized that without the Holy Spirit, His followers—

including us—would not be able to fulfill God's call in their lives,

so He sent the Holy Spirit to be our Helper, Teacher, Comforter,

Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Revealer of truth and the One

who empowers us. Developing a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit is crucial for those who desire to discover and fulfill

God's will for their lives. Yet the truth is that many Christians are on fire for God and love Jesus with all their hearts, minds, souls

and strength, but they remain less familiar with the Holy Spirit. Some long for fellowship with the Spirit of God to hear His voice

but don't know how or don't believe that they can. In order to nourish and strengthen your relationship with the Holy Spirit, join

your fellow parishioners on a 21-day daily e-mail devotional with scripture readings beginning on Monday, April 25, 2016,

and concluding on the Feast of Pentecost, Sunday, May 15. If you would like to receive these daily devotionals, please

e-mail the Office of Family Life Services at [email protected], or call them at 561-665-8566.

Ministries Our purpose on Earth is not to get lost in the dark, but to be a light to others, so they may

find a way through us. Our St. Vincent Ferrer Care Ministry (SVFCM) is made up of Par ish registered, men and women who like to be of service to God, by giving their time assisting the truly needy of our Church and its Community. Most of our clients are in need of food, help with utility bills or rent and most often they

need direction of where to turn to for additional assistance. Sometimes they just need a caring ear to listen. In some cases, we will make an appointment to meet with them in the Rectory conference room to get a better understanding of their predicament, however, most interactions are over the phone from your home office. Care Ministers work one morning or afternoon a week taking telephone messages from our answering service and returning calls to clients. Our ministry meets every Wednesday at 7PM to review the cases of the past week. It’s at our meetings that the more involved cases get the input from the “group think tank” that helps resolve the case. New members receive training with one of our Care Ministers until they feel comfortable to work alone. During the season, we would like to have three Care Ministers, during the week, take calls on their assigned day. If you think this Ministry speaks to you, we invite you to sit in on one of our meetings to see if our Ministry is worthy of your time and talents. The best training for this work is your own life’s experiences. For Additional information please call 272-7580 and leave a message for Mike or Joe to call you back.

Our St. Vincent Ferrer Care Ministry is here to help the less fortunate of our community. There is no need to give money to panhandlers. If you are approached by anyone on the grounds of the church, kindly give them our phone number . We are here to help them.

The Patriotic Rosary

Please join us for the Patriotic Rosary in the church, every Tuesday and Thursday after the 8:30 a.m. Mass, as we continue to pray for life, the sanctity of marriage and Religious Freedom.

~ Rosary for Peace ~ In various apparitions, Mary has appeared holding a rosary and has asked that we continue to pray this prayer. She always leads us to her Son, and presents our needs before Him. Prayer is about developing our relationship with God, and loving Him more. So, it makes sense to get to know Him through the events of the life of Christ that we meditate on during the rosary. Please join us every Monday at 7:00pm in the Adoration Chapel to pray the Rosary for Peace.
