Saint Augustin
Catholic Church & School
Annual Report to the Community
2018-2019
Dear Parishioners,
This is my fourth year here serving as your Pastor, and I’m pleased again to report on the status and development of our community here at Saint Augustin. This past year has been one of renewal, and we’re definitely excited about some of the developments taking place.
As a committed Catholic community of believers, we are expected to be good stewards of the gifts that God has given us. The phrase that is frequently used to describe stewardship is using our “time, talent, and treasure” in the way that the Our Lord would have us use these gifts. With that in mind here are some of the developments at St. Augustin.
1. Our physical property a. As part of the Centennial Capital Campaign, we have completed a resurfacing of the church
parking lot, repainted the parish hall, and replaced the aging partitions in the parish hall. These partitions allow us to hold more meetings and address the increasing demands of our various ministries.
b. After much anticipation, we now have the custom, hand crafted statues of Saints Augustin and Monica in the rear of the church.
c. We are addressing some urgent needs in the Heating, Cooling, and Fire Alarm system areas. d. The school roof will hopefully be replaced this coming Spring.
2. Our organization a. We have new people in key positions this year. Kristel Kautzky is in her first year as Principal of
our grade school, following the exemplary leadership of Nancy Dowdle, who served the school as Principal for the last 32 years. Randy Mudge, Jill Frederick, and Paul Cognac joined us recently each as Business Manager, Accountant and Maintenance Man respectively. All have been a wonderful addition to the parish staff. We will soon be interviewing for a new full-time Music Director for the parish.
3. Faith Development a. Fr. Pisut is now celebrating Mass on Thursday at 9:00 am each week at the church for the Saint
Augustin school children. If there is inclement weather Mass will be held at the school. b. Father Livingstone spends part of one day each week at the grade school to teach children about
our faith. c. Under our Director of Religious Education, Janis Falk, our K-8 religious education program has
grown to 128 students this year. We use the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program which draws people from outside the parish as well.
d. We made the decision last year to accommodate the space needs of the Saint Thomas Academy home schooling organization for 2 days each week. This group has grown from 6 in the last academic year to 53 in the current one! There are definitely some signs of stress on those 2 days, but the children are benefiting from Mass on both of these days, and also by way of getting their religious education in the setting of an established faith community.
e. We’re working now to evaluate how we might celebrate our 25th year of Perpetual Adoration in our chapel, bringing new life and awareness to this beautiful part of who we are as a community.
Saint Augustin has a unique role within the city due to its age, classic architecture, central and easily accessible location, the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and its many and growing programs and activities. We will strive to do everything we can to further the Mission of Mother Church here in the city of Des Moines.
Sincerely,
Rev. Christopher Pisut, Pastor, St. Augustin

Faith Formation Classes Children from toddler to sixth grade explore the mysteries of the
Kingdom of God through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
approach. Starting in 2018, St. Augustin became host to “The Third
Plane,” for 7th grade and older. This is an experimental CGS class
initiated by students, which is the first of its kind in the world. St.
Augustin sixth through eighth grade classes use the traditional religious
education following texts by Loyola and St. Mary’s Presses. Children 5th
grade and older are invited serve the Mass as Altar Servers and Lectors.
In the 2019-20 academic year:
127 students from Toddler - 8th grade attend Faith Formation classes.
33 volunteers serve these children.
The office of Faith Formation also provides direction for sacramental
preparation.
34 students in 2nd grade will celebrate First Reconciliation & First
Holy Communion in May 2020.
11 adult volunteers will serve these children.
Confirmation preparation is a two-year process for 9th and 10th graders.
A total of 63 students attended preparation sessions.
30 10th grade students will celebrate Confirmation in February 2020.
14 adult volunteers serve Confirmation candidates.
Summer Activities St. Augustin hosted training for adult catechists teaching 3-6 year old
children and 6-9 year old children using the Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd approach.
As we prepared for an increase in students, the St. Augustin Knights of
Columbus purchased rolling room dividers to expand the classroom
spaces in the lower level to accommodate more children.
In July 2019, St. Augustin teamed with St. Therese of the Child Jesus,
Des Moines to host a summer youth mission for children from
kindergarten to 4th grade. 40 children were served by 5 adult and 23
teen volunteers.
Youth Ministry Since the addition of part-time youth minister, Benjamin Cohen, in the
fall of 2017, parish high school students have enjoyed several fun and
prayerful events throughout the school year. Ben is a member of the St.
Augustin Knights of Columbus and has worked with them to increase
student activity in Knight functions. In return, the Knights have
generously sponsored youth ministry efforts. The parish plans to hire a
half-time youth minister in 2020 to continue the good work which Ben
has begun as Ben continues to serve in a volunteer capacity. St. Augustin
youth ministry served approximately 30 students in 2018-19.
For the 2018-2019 school year, 280 preschool - 8th grade students were enrolled at Saint Augustin Catholic School.
The school employed 30 teachers and 6 support staff for the 2018-2019 year.
Our 4-year-old Preschool program received the state-wide Voluntary Preschool Grant. Through the grant, students enrolled in our 4-year-old preschool program received free tuition.
The Catholic Tuition Organization (CTO) provided tuition assistance to many families within the Diocese of Des Moines. In the 2018-2019 school year, CTO distributed $58,503 to Saint Augustin families.
The mission of St. Augustin Catholic School is to provide meaningful, educational experiences for our students in an environment integrated by Gospel values, which nurtures faith, community, prayer, and service.
Therefore, we believe that:
† Catholic schools exist to teach the traditions and doctrines of the Catholic Church and to live the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
† Parents are the primary educators, and Catholic schools are partners with parents in the education of their children/adolescents.
† Each child/adolescent in a Catholic school, regardless of race, cultural heritage, or gender, grows in self-esteem through the development of her/his talents, skills, and interests.
† Catholic schools will provide a warm, caring environment where children/adolescents will be challenged to learn the essential curriculum, regardless of learning rate or style.
† All children/adolescents in Catholic schools learn the value of human dignity and the concepts of peace and justice to enable them to be involved participants in a global society.

Catholic Schools Week Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2019 was January 27 - February 2. We celebrated the week by hosting an open house showcasing student artwork from throughout the year, writing notes to community members, participating in a Living Rosary, playing Bingo, watching a video from our St. Augustin Seminarian, Nick Smith, and coordinating a middle school outing. Our faculty and staff members were also recognized for every five years of service at a Diocesan-wide mass held in April due to weather. Through these community-building events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.
Mission Awareness
Blue & Gold Days A Blue & Gold Day is held the last Friday of each month to raise money for a charity. Students donated $1 or more to wear jeans and a spirit shirt to school. In total, $3,428 was donated last year. Monthly totals are as follows:
Service Hours We are proud of our tradition of academic excellence in our Des Moines private school, but also proud of our students’ dedication to serving the church, school, and community. Throughout the year, each class takes part in a service project. Our middle school students complete service hours as part of their religion class requirements.

The location where the parish endowment funds are held has been changed. The endowment funds which were
being held and managed at Northern Trust, are now being held at the Catholic Foundation of SW Iowa. The
Catholic Foundation was established by Bishop Pates approximately 10 years ago, and has an overall fund size of
over $80 million dollars. This new structure will enable Catholic givers to enjoy an improved and more efficient
tax structure in which to invest. It will also facilitate a much more regular interaction with a local, Catholic based
organization that will invest our money in a responsible manner, consistent with Catholic values.
