Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, celebrates and affirms that Jesus, though born of a human mother, truly is divine. This dogma of the Church was proclaimed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 and reaffirmed at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the last of the patris c ecumenical councils recognized by most Chris an denomina ons. The controversy was intense as many devout people tried to protect the transcendence of the one true God, denying that the eternal God was born of a creature. The Council affirmed that God’s ways are beyond our human comprehension and that he revealed his plan of salva on to us through Jesus Christ. Jesus, uniquely, is both fully human and fully divine. We cannot comprehend how this is so, but we believe that it is true and Jesus is the true source of our salva on.

In the Book of Numbers, God tells Moses that he will bless his people and will let his face shine upon them. Jesus will be the true face of God whose light shines upon us. St. Paul tells us that Jesus is the Son of God, born of a woman through the power of the Holy Spirit. In the gospel, the shepherds visit the Holy Family at the manger, telling Joseph and Mary that the Angel of the Lord revealed that their baby son is the Savior of the world.

The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

The writer of the Book of Sirach gives us prac cal advice on living out our role within our own family. The father is set in honor over his children while the mother holds authority over them. Children are to honor their parents and care for them when they age. St. Paul con nues this theme wri ng to the Colossians telling them about how husbands, wives and children should relate to one another. He tells them to be kind, compassionate, humble, pa ent, thankful and forgiving. And, above all, they are to “put on love.” In a sense, love is who they are to become. In the reading from Ma hew’s gospel, the Holy Family is in danger. The Angel of the Lord tells Joseph to take Mary and the child Jesus and flee to Egypt. Later, when the danger is over, the angel tells Joseph to return to Israel, and the Holy Family se les in the town of Nazareth.

On this first Sunday of the Christmas season we gather and recall how holiness does not lie in extraordinary works, but in living a life of faith each day. We remember the faith of our ancestors, celebrate the faith of the Holy Family, and pray that our own families are led to a stronger faith.

From the Pastor’s Desk

On Wednesday we celebrated Christmas. For the Church, the celebra on is just beginning. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In the mystery of the Incarna on God’s divinity is joined to our humanity. So this feast is a celebra on of our human families. God sanc fies our human nature by becoming one of us and giving us a share in his divine nature through bap sm.

The Second Va can Council says that the family is the "domes c church" where the love of God is passed on to our children and nurtured in the home. In the bap smal liturgy parents make the promise to raise their children in the ways of faith. Also in that liturgy we pray for God’s blessings on the parents that they may be the best of teachers in all that they say and do. The Holy Family is a model for us in living, of loving and taking care of our families.

The Scriptures today give us some guidance on how family members should treat one another. The reading from Sirach is a commentary on the Fourth Commandment. We should remember that he speaks of God’s will, not just some maxim that we can choose to ignore. Parents have honor and authority over their children. We are called to honor our parents, to take care of them when they are old, even if they become infirm in mind or body. Since family rela onships are based on the love of God, we should accept these responsibili es as labors of love not as burdens or as inconveniences. Interes ngly, this Com-mandment is the only one that comes with a specific promise from God: “that you may have long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you”. We are being promised eternal life. The pa ence and love we show our parents will be reward-ed as we are more closely conformed to the divine image in which we were created.

St. Paul echoes this theme in his Le er to the Colossians as he describes the virtues of a healthy rela onship. We are to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and pa ence. We are to bear with one another and forgive one another just as God has forgiven us. And above all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfec on. St. Paul really challenges us to act on our faith, especially when it is difficult and especially toward those we love. Husbands and wives are to be mutually loving and respec ul, avoiding bi erness. Children are to obey their parents. Parents are not to provoke or discourage their children. St. Paul tells us that the key to all this is gra tude. If we are grateful for the people in our lives, the love they give us and how blessed we are to be loved, the “grievances” will not upset us out of propor on. Nor will our grievances cause us to lose per-spec ve on what is truly important in life: the fact that we are in a rela onship of love with one another and with God.

The gospel story tells us how Joseph listened and acted upon God’s word to protect his family. First he takes the family to Egypt for safety, and when the danger is passed, they return home from exile, se ling in Nazareth. In this short story we learn how God works in human lives to fulfill his plans (in this case the fulfillment of salva on history). But we also see how God wants us to live, listening to his commandments. Joseph is a model of humility and obedience, yet strong in his role as hus-band and father, protec ng, providing for, and nurturing Mary and Jesus. Mary, of course, is the perfect model for listening to, and ac ng upon, God’s word. The theme of obedience and sacrifice for others is the spiritual message of the scriptures. We are called to grow in our bap smal grace, becoming more like Christ who, in total obedience to God, sacrificed himself for us. The Holy Family draws into the wonder of the mystery of God’s love for us, giving us their guidance and intercession to help our families grow in the life of the Spirit.

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is celebrated on Wednesday, January 1st. As we honor the Blessed Mother, we rejoice that God comes to us, joining our human family. This con nues the celebra ons of Christmas and of the Holy Family. The Vigil Mass will be on Tuesday, New Year’s Eve at 4 p.m. The Mass on New Year’s Day will be at 9 a.m. This is a Holy Day of Obliga-

on.

The Christmas Season extends for two more weeks. Next Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany (The Three Kings). Epiphany is the Twel h Day of Christmas, tradi onally the day when the Christmas decora ons are taken down. The following Sunday, January 12, is the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord, which ends the liturgical season of Christmas. Unlike the secular culture, which has a big build-up for Christmas and a big let-down on December 26, as Catholics we keep the joy of Christmas alive in our hearts and homes for three weeks. Please don’t give in to the culture; keep the spirit and the joy alive. The winter is long and cold enough as it is.

Please notify the rectory office at 773-777-2666 when a family member is hospitalized. Because of HIP-PA regulations (Privacy Laws), hospitals are no longer permitted to notify us when parishioners are admitted to the hospital.

The School had an early dismissal (1:45 pm) on Friday, December 20, 2019 and will be closed until classes resume on Monday, January 6, 2020.
