Saint Rafka Maronite Genealogy Sunday On this Sunday we celebrate all the generations in the history of Israel that brought about the coming of the Lord – through faith – beginning with Abraham, and until Joseph the Father of Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, God’s plan of salvation reflects the patience of God and his mercy towards our human nature, through both faith (trust and obedience), and sin (expressed in doubting). Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans reminds all nations – Jews and Greeks alike – how they have been included in God’s saving plan. like his own!

Our Hoosoyo this Sunday focuses on Christ, the Eternally Begotten Son of God, to be revealed as the hidden mystery of God to us and transfigured in God’s proper time. Like the generations of the past – as a confirmation of our inclusion in this divine plan – the Church and her children now prepare for Christ’s nativity – being eternally renewed and transfigured before us.

The Qolo and the Mazmooro hymns, dwell on the Cave of Bethlehem, where all creation has gathered to worship in wonder God’s humble presence in their midst: Emanuel (Hebrew: God among us)! Like heaven, earth, has become God’s dwelling place. All creatures now give praise to the Son of God who has become the Son of Man. He has made his nature one with ours; he has taken what is ours and made it his own. He has established his family with Mary and Joseph in our midst: the cribs in our churches reflect this so wonder-fully!

From now on both heavenly and earthly beings will stand forever stilled in awe at his gentle presence. Christ is our Covenant of Grace as we hand him down from generation to generation. He is carried by the angles and by the ark whose two fiery wheels are Joseph and Mary.

May the Wonder Child of Grace come to be your guest this Christmas!

May you learn to open the doors of your hospitality forever wide!

Father Steve Bonian, S.J.

Abouna’s Corner

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

This is the last Sunday before Christmas dawns upon us. This year, we have an entire week of prayerful preparation for the Glorious Birth of the Lord. This is unique in the liturgical calendar to hear the full course of readings at the Divine Liturgy at the end of the Season of Announcement.

Father Chris Henderson is now at home and in the care of Open Arms Hospice. Right now, he is actually feeling a lot better due to pain management medication and taking life a bit slower. Father is in good spirits and is praying with us as we pray the Christmas Novena. If you would like to help with bringing him a meal, please contact Paula Howard-Casby by email or phone at 202-538-1469.

Please also pray for Father Jack Morrison, the administrator of Mary, Mother of the Light Mission in Palm Beach, FL. Father has been in a coma for several weeks. May God return him to us to continue his ministry in the Lord’s Vineyard!

Just today, I received a link from Father Christopher Smith, Pastor of Prince of Peace Church. The link was to a great article by Father James Bradley, about the growth of the Catholic Church in the Upstate/Greenville area of South Carolina. This is a great, well written article and I urge you to read it at your leisure.

There will NOT be a Knights of Columbus Breakfast this Sunday after the Liturgy. There WILL be a day long period of confessions on Wednesday, December 21 from 9 AM till 6:30 PM. The Christmas Novena will follow at 7 PM.

You still have one week to have your loved ones included in the Christmas Bulletin for Christmas Flower Memorials. There are envelops in the pews.

Have a great weekend and see you in Church. Salaam!

Ab. Bart

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel God of heavenly wisdom, you gave us Mary, Mother of Jesus, to be our guide and counselor. Grant that we may always seek her motherly help in this life and so enjoy her blessed presence in the life to come. O Mother of Good Counsel, patroness of the National Council of Catholic Women, intercede for us, that we may be wise, courageous and loving leaders of the Church. Help us, dear mother, to know the mind of Jesus, your son. May the Holy Spirit fill us with reverence for God’s creation and compassion for all God’s children. May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God and may God’s gift of faith and living hope prepare us for the fullness of the world to come. Amen.
