REMEMBERING A VERY JOYFUL AFTERNOON AT SAINT JOSEPH

Before you know it, the season of Lent will be upon us. (Ash Wednesday is February 14.) But before we begin to prepare to sing Alleluia at the Resurrection of Our Lord, let us take a moment to remember the joys we experienced when celebrating our Savior’s birth. Here are a collection of photos from the wonderful “Afternoon of Christmas Joy” Concert directed by Saint Joseph Music Director Monroe Quinn and featuring our amazingly talented Adult and Children’s Choir, Leaders of Song, Parish Musicians and Clergy!

K of C founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney

This Sunday the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, two teams that don’t count a great many of our parishioners among their fans, will vie to be Super Bowl

champs. The winners will get, besides monetary rewards, enormous and greatly prized rings. Longtime Patriots’ star linebacker Rob Ninkovich, now retired, referring to his, said, “I’m afraid if I fall in water, I’ll sink to the bottom.”

Knowledgeable Giants’ fans will always remember, just as Confederate sympathizers will always remember Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, the day when their team sustained a seemingly impossible loss against the Eagles when, in the closing seconds, with the Eagles out of time-outs,

instead of taking a game-ending knee, quarterback Joe Pisarcik muffed a handoff to fullback Larry Czonka, and future Jets’ coach Herm Edwards ran the fumble in for a touchdown in what has been called “The Miracle at the Meadowlands” or, by Giants’ fans, simply “The Fumble.” Of course, the Giants have done well in their Super Bowl appearances, while the Jets can only point to one victory in it, next year being its fiftieth anniversary. In 2008’s Super Bowl XLIII, the Giants defeated the previously unbeaten Patriots. The key play was a pass from Eli Manning to David Tyree that was an almost impossible catch that Tyree trapped with his helmet. Sister Joan Marie Aycock, an Ursuline nun from New Orleans, had sent Giants’ president John Mara a medal of Our Lady of Prompt Succor (that is, “Help”). After the catch, a TV camera captured Mr. Mara removing the medal from his pocket. Sister Joan had sent the medal because she was a Saints’ fan, and Eli Manning’s father Archie had been her team’s quarterback in its early days. Sr. Joan, speaking of the medal later, said the “Our Lady of Prompt Succor is not some lucky bean to help teams win football games. We pray that the players do their best and nobody gets injured.” I don’t know whether Sister Joan is still with us, or whether, if she is, she sent the Saints a medal before their hard-to-take loss to the Vikings in this season’s NFC playoffs, but her description of the relation of petitionary prayer to sports games seems to me to merit a nice trophy. I hope everybody enjoys the big game.

Msgr. David Hubba

INVITATION TO A SPECIAL MARIAN DEVOTION

—BEGINS FEBRUARY 20

All parishioners, especially those who feel a special closeness with the Blessed Mother, are encouraged to find out and take part in a special devotion called Total Consecration. This method of consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary was made known by St. Louis De Montfort in his book, True Devotion to Mary. It is a spiritual devotion that helps to bring souls to a perfect imitation of Christ by imitating His Mother. The consecration is accomplished through a 33-day exercise of prayer (about 5-10 minutes per day) prior to a Marian Feast. The next consecration day will be the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25. The preparation will begin on February 20. Members of the Legion of Mary have the necessary materials available at no charge. Please contact Pat at 201-599-2123 or email [email protected] for more information.

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS ANNUAL APPEAL

—FEBRUARY 3-4 KICK-OFF This year’s Appeal is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God’s generosity and to share the blessings we have been given

with those around us. This year, our parish goal is $80,111. The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO programs available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most importantly, brings Christ’s Good News to the people of the Archdicoese. Our own parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal. It is important for all of us to participate. Please consider making a gift to the 2018 Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal and fill out your pledge envelope which you will find in the pews today. (Envelopes can be dropped into the collection basket.) Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…. He told them, ‘Let usgo on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come. ‘” -Mark 1:35,38

In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes—healing the sick and preaching. But befoe He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.
