bad weather, some of our parishioners prudently decide to remain home so as to avoid falling. Encourage them to contact the parish office if they will be unable to attend Mass for a month or more.

Please keep all our parishioners in your prayers. We do not publish a list because it would be difficult to keep up to date and some people value their privacy. Sometimes when parishioners face illness, they are doing all they can to face the situation and want some time alone. Sometimes they forget to call the parish for spiritual help. We want to be able to address their needs and at the same time respect their wishes. If someone wants to solicit special prayer support, they may call the prayer chain. God knows who our parishioners are that need our special prayers and our petition, “For all our Parishioners, especially those who are sick and homebound,” covers a multitude of our brothers and sisters.

Don’t forget: all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older.

May God bless each of you. Make it a great week and a great Lent.

With love and prayers,

Father Bob Edwards

Father Bob’s Corner .

Dear Friends, “God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” -- John 4:24

This Gospel passage reminds me of how St. Paul tells us that “we do not know how to pray,” but that the Spirit “comes to the aid of our weakness.” (Romans 8:26). The Holy Spirit helps us to make contact with God through our worship. With the help of the Holy Spirit our distractions diminish and our spirits soar. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to pray.

St. Patrick Parishioners will notice that plaster repairs are being addressed. The leaky roof on the rectory will be next. Donations are appreciated.

St. Paul Parish Council met Monday night. We discussed our parish Facebook page and our Lenten programs, reviewed Mass times and the minutes of the December Diocesan Pastoral Council . All items will require more study. The possible change of Mass times will definitely require more information.

Every once in a while we locate a parishioner who has been homebound without any contact from the parish. We want to reach out to all our parishioners, especially those who are unable to come to Mass. We always have parishioners who are having tests or going to various hospitals or rehab facilities. 2017 Annual Bishop’s Appeal for Catholic Charities and Church

Our parish joins with parishes throughout the Diocese of Youngstown in making a commitment to the 2017 Bishop’s Appeal for Catholic Charities and Church. This year’s goal is $4 million. The Appeal is the pri-mary funding source for Catholic Charities in our six-county diocese. More and more needy persons come to Catholic Charities for help, and they depend on our support of the Bishop’s Appeal. The Bishop’s Ap-peal also helps to subsidize traditional Church minis-tries. Bishop Murry is counting on our support of the 2017 Bishop’s Appeal. It is his fervent hope that every parish will reach their goal. We ask that you prayerfully make a gift to the Annual Appeal, using the envelope in your pew or the response card mailed to your home. Thank you in advance for your reflec-tion and generous response to the Bishop’s Appeal.

LENT 2017 ALMSGIVING

(ACTS OF MERCY) “Sir, give me this water that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here

to draw water.” John 4:5-42

A request for water and the Samari-tan woman’s act of mercy develops into an encounter with Jesus as living water and into a proclamation of the Good News. The third discipline of faith, almsgiving is not limited to throwing coins into a homeless per-son’s hat. Almsgiving is the spiritual practice of giv-ing ourselves in acts of mercy. Jesus asks an outcast woman for a drink of water. Her act of kindness opens her to the possibility of receiving what she needs. This woman needs a life-change found in the mercy of Jesus. This is a holy encounter at its very best. Mercy begets mercy. Like Jesus in the desert or in the mountains, this woman is in a wilderness of her very own. Following her encounter with Jesus, her sins are made whiter than snow. Then she joyful-ly shares this experience with others.

When have you encountered mercy? What difference did it make in your life?

What acts of mercy does your parish practice?
