Dear Friends in Christ,
The third week of Advent begins with Gaudete (Joy) Sunday. In it Holy Mother, the Church, bids us to rejoice. Unlike Lent which is primarily a season of repentance, Advent, in addition, is also a season of expectation of a great guest, the savior of the world. This great expectation fills us with joy knowing that the one we expect is already with us.
The expectation of this great guest (Emmanuel - God with us) leads to joy even as we wait patiently for His coming. True joy is never selfish but communal in that we call others to share in our joy. Similarly, true joy is an invitation for others to share in our gifts which is the cause of our joy - Jesus. That is the reason this season is a time for joyful waiting and joyful sharing of what we have received. The great-
est gift to share is that of Emmanuel with our family members, friends and others. But we also share His temporal gifts, food, clothing and other means of livelihood with others especially those who are less fortunate than we are. May the joy of this Gaudete Sunday and week warm our hearts so we may share our gifts joyfully.
A few years ago, one of our parishioners shared with me a reflection from Michael Zelenka published on Notre Dame’s Web-site. It is a reflection from the first week of Advent but I think it is worthwhile and an excerpt might be worth your time as it con-trasts the world’s demands of Christmas (no regards to Advent, Advertisements, shopping, pressure for perfect holiday, etc.) and that of the Christian understanding.
…In our efforts to live up to these demands, we are consumed by shopping, parties, wrapping, cleaning, bak-ing, mailing, decorating, and more shopping. We find ourselves filled with more debt, stress, exhaustion, and stuff than hope, peace, and joy. We celebrate Christmas without first celebrating Advent. We heed society’s demands and dismiss the call of Jesus…”
Like the first apostles, may we have the courage this Advent to leave aside the nets of the world that have caught us in the belief that more stuff leads to more joy. May we boldly jump out of the boats headed toward frustra-tion and emptiness and into the waters that lead to Christ.
As we prepare our homes for the holidays, let’s make sure we prepare our hearts for the Incarnation during Advent. Let’s spend more time praying and less money on gifts; more time creating memories with loved ones and less energy on the stress of the season. Jesus invites us to the Mass, not the mall. He wants us to engage in the Word, not the worry. He beckons us to his presence in the Eucharist, not to the presents under the tree. This Ad-vent let’s fight for the space to hear his call, “Come after me.”
Leave everything behind, jump into the water, and follow Jesus!

Merry Christmas
The Ladies Guild would like to thank the many parishion-ers who helped to make our Bake Sale fundraiser a success, raising over $800. Also thank you to our members who donated the delicious baked goods and helped at the sale. Through the kindness and generosity of our parishioners, the Ladies Guild has made donations to charity and purchased many needed items for St. Pat-rick’s. This year the Ladies donated to Montini tuition assistance, the Youth Ministry and the Knights of Colum-bus Holiday Meals program. We are very appreciative of your support and we feel honored to be able to help our parish and our community. Diocesan Stewardship Appeal Let’s Complete our Parish Goal Before 2019!
We were unable to meet the Diocese’s September 30th completion date challenge but we are much closer to our target than ever before: It is our hope that with your sup-port we will be able to meet our target by the end of December.

Vocation Corner
It is Gaudete Sunday!
What does that fancy word mean? It is a Latin word that means joy! Therefore, we call this Joy Sunday and we mark this special Advent Sunday by lighting a rose col-ored candle rather than a purple one, as we do on all the other Sundays on Advent.
We do this because we are called to celebrate with joy the fact that Christ is on His way!
In celebration, I would encourage you to spend some time in prayer today asking God to give you an increase of joy and an appreciation for the fact that He has called you to something great! Even though you might not yet know exactly what that ‘something great’ is, you can be positive that greatness does indeed lie ahead. So give thanks and praise that He breathed your life into existence and de-sires beautiful, wondrous, redemptive things for you.
Celebrating Children at St. Patrick
To the parents of our young children, may we suggest:
∗Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in
God’s house. All are welcome! ∗Sit toward the front on St. Joseph’s side or in the chapel. It will be easier for your little ones to see and hear. Should you need to leave with them - the TV in the library broadcasts the Mass and the washroom is convenient. ∗Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, ushers, choir, etc. to them. Teach them to talk in a “church” voice. ∗Sing the prayers, pray and voice the responses. Chil-dren learn liturgical behavior by copying you. ∗If you have to leave Mass, please feel free to do so, but please come back. Jesus and we want you there.
To the members of our church: The presence of the children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder that our parish family is grow-ing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents.

“In 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now know as Our Lady of Guadalupe.
She sent him with miraculous flowers in his cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened the cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this day. The chapel was quickly built, millions embraced Christianity, and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples.

The “O” Antiphons of Advent Begin Monday - December 17th
As the days shorten and the nights become the longest of the year, many Christians pray what are called the O Anti-phons. Starting on the 17th of December and going until Christmas Eve, these Antiphons are small opening and closing prayers before the Magnificat, which are prayed daily during evening prayer (Liturgy of the Hours/Divine Office). Going back to the 8th century, perhaps earlier, each antiphon takes a phrase from the Hebrew Bible and applies it to Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Many of the titles come from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Each day a different aspect of the Messiah is highlighted. For Christians, the O Antiphons are not merely representative of promises made. They are also a celebration of promises kept. They connect us to the past and point to a blessed future. They are a wonderful prepa-ration for Christmas—joyful and beautiful.
A curious feature of these antiphons is that the first letter of each invocation may be taken from the Latin to form an acrostic in reverse. So the first letters of Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, Clavis, Oriens, Rex, and Emmanuel, provide the Lat-in words: ERO CRAS . The phrase spells out the response of Christ himself to the heartfelt prayer of his people: "Tomorrow I will be there".

Baptism of Infants or children under 7 years of age:
To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please con-sider scheduling your child’s Baptism before your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is required for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is re-quired and you may take the class before your child is born. You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism.
Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
