A Message From Our Pastor
Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week MOVIES – The Traditional Catholic Rosary
Hopefully these past weeks have enlivened you to the pow-erful gifts of the Sacraments to fight the devil. God in His wonderful generosity gave them to us for the strengthening of our faith and deepening our union with Him. While these are efficacious instruments that dispense God’s grace in a special way, they are not the only gift we have been given to fight the battle against evil. The rosary is a gift from God that is easily accessible and something everybody can do be they young or old, rich or poor, educated or uneducated. It can be prayed wherever one finds oneself and at any time. A seminary for-mater, if he woke up in the middle of the night, would walk the halls of the seminary praying the rosary. People can be seen walking along the street with a rosary dangling from their hand. You do not need to be in a church or in a prayer space in your home. For centuries, the rosary has been a powerful weapon in tem-poral and spiritual battles. This string of beads has been lik-ened, in analogy and visions, to a spiritual sword to fight evil. It has been utilized throughout its life to aid in the defense of the Church and to strengthen and protect the faithful. St. John Paul II once said, “At times when Christianity itself seemed under threat, its deliverance was attributed to the power of this prayer [the rosary], and Our Lady of the Rosary was acclaimed as the one whose intercession brought salvation.” There are many unwinnable battles that have been won due to the people and the soldiers faithfully praying the rosary. St. John Paul II described the reason for the spiritual power of the rosary when he said: “To recite the rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ.” Mary brings us to her son who makes the devil flee. Christ our Sav-ior saves us from the clutches of the devil; and in Christ’s pres-ence, we find continued protection from Satan and his cunning. We place our souls in the hand of Jesus to be given to the Fa-ther. The rosary, then, is a way that we grow in unity with the Father through the Son along with Mary.

FIRST READING - 2 Kings 5:14-17 Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times at the word of Elisha, the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean of his leprosy. Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said, "Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant." Elisha replied, "As the LORD lives whom I serve, I will not take it;" and despite Naaman's urging, he still refused. Naaman said: "If you will not accept, please let me, your servant, have two mule-loads of earth, for I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any other god except to the LORD."
SECOND READING - 2 Timothy 2:8-13 Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descen-dant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those
who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. This saying is trust-worthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.
GOSPEL - Luke 17:11-19 As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!" And when he saw them, he said, "Go show yourselves to the priests." As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?" Then he said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you."

St. Philip the Apostle Church presents Kitty Cleveland on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019 from 1:00 to 4:30 in the St. Philip school gym. Kitty Cleveland is a singer/songwriter and inspirational speaker from New Orleans. She began her professional ca-reer as a lawyer and then as a college professor. In adoration chapel one day in 1998, as she searched for God during a devastating family crisis, she clearly heard the Lord Jesus call her to become a “music missionary.” Kitty will share her family's Divine Mercy miracle story, along with an afternoon of music, reflection, and inspiration. Her endearing person-ality and delightful humor, along with her beauti-ful singing voice is both uplifting and encouraging.
