From the Pastor’s Desk…

This Sunday, the Word of God teaches that God shows no favoritism and makes no distinction be-tween classes of people. In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah gives his oppressed people a message of hope. He tells them that God has not forgotten His chosen people and describes miracles that symbolize the transformation that He will effect in man and in creation. In the second reading, St. James says that we tend to show favoritism in our dealings with others and are quick to judge based upon superficial standards. His message is very relevant today. It is sad to know that in our society, favoritism, discrimination and racism still plague our society. Following Christ’s teachings, however, we Christians should not make distinctions in dealing with the rich and the poor, the powerful and the lowly. Today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus travelled to various towns doing good. We were not told that he healed only the poor or only the rich. Rather, he allowed his blessings to reach the poor as well as the rich, the good as well as the bad. Jesus did not discriminate or show favoritism. Instead, he identified with all classes of people. He healed the poor, the blind, the lame, the deaf and the dumb without showing favor-itism, or minding the race, the economic, social, religious or political status of those he helped. “He did all things well.” May we go about doing good and reaching out to those in need without giving impor-tance to who they are, their status, and class in life.

St. Nicholas of Tolentine, our Patron Saint Next Sunday, September 16th, we will celebrate our Parish Feast at the 12:15 PM Mass. St. Nicholas was born in the village of Sant’Angelo in Pontano, Italy in 1245. He was named after St. Nicholas of Bari since his parents considered his birth a gift through this saint’s intercession. Brought up with a Christian education, Nicholas grew up a pious young boy.

He professed his religious vows at the age of sixteen in 1261, a few years after the foundation of a new order, the Hermits of St. Augustine. After serving briefly in Cingoli and other houses of his order, he went to Tolentino and remained there for the rest of his life. Amidst the decline of morality and religion in the developing city of Tolentino, Nicholas remained an authentic witness of Christ. He engaged in daily preaching and reached out to the poor and the sick. St. Nicholas gave his spirit to his Creator on the 10th of September. Just as he did miracles during his life time, multiple miracles and wonders were performed through his intercession. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed St. Nicholas as the “Patron Saint of the Souls in Purgatory. As we celebrate his feast next Sunday, may we also emulate his great love for God and others in our love and concern for the people around us! God bless you!

Fr. John Francis

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER

Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Registration for Religious Education continues after Masses on Sunday and throughout the week at the Faith Formation Cen-ter. Classes begin on Sunday, September 16th, at 8:45. Please come to the blue door at the Faith Formation Center. All students will be at the 10:45 Mass. Sunday is National Catechetical Sun-day. All of the catechists will be commissioned during that Mass. All parents will be asked to also commit themselves to being part of their child’s faith formation.

We will have the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd avail-able on Sunday beginning at 8:45. This program is based on Maria Montessori’s method of education. They will not be bored because there is a great deal of involvement of the children in different learning activities. Give it a try; I am sure they will be happy! Children 3, 4, and 5 years old are welcome.

This week I will begin Bible classes for adults in English and in Spanish. These classes are being offered twice - once in the morning and the same class is repeated in an evening. This will hopefully make it more convenient for all who wish to be involved in studying the Bible. The classes have been slated as follows: TUESDAY, September 11, 7:00 pm in English and is repeated on THURSDAY, September 13, 10:00 am. All classes will be in the Faith Formation Center. The Bible classes in Span-ish will be WEDNESDAY, September 12 at 10:00 am and re-peated in the evening at 7:00 pm also in the Faith Formation Center.

Adults who need Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirma-tion and/or Matrimony please call Sr. Alice at 718 591-6536. Generally these sessions are on Sunday but arrangements can be made if necessary. These sessions will begin on Sunday, Sep-tember 23 at 10:30 am in the Faith Formation Center.

THE MAGNIFICAT DAY—Saturday, October 6, 2018—Kings Theatre, Brooklyn Many of us use the Magnificat Daily Mass booklet. Each year “Magnificat” chooses a site to hold its annual gathering of many of the best Catholic speakers. This year Brooklyn has been cho-sen to co-host this marvelous event. The site seats 3500 people and one-third are already sold. Since this is a nation-wide event, tickets will be sold very quickly. I participated when this event was held in Philadelphia. It really was an incredible experience for me and those who went with me. Tickets for individuals are $49.00, however in groups of 10 tickets are $29.00 each. Please see Sr. Alice as soon as possible. Please Note: All the presenta-tions will be in English.

Today is Grandparents’ Day.! At all Masses, there will be a spe-cial blessing for all grandparents. They are an incredible treas-ure in our families.

God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation

Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Directora de Formación de Fe

driver’s license.

See how important you are!
