From the Pastor’s Desk…
Catechetical Sunday - September 16, 2018
Today, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. The 2018 theme is "Enlisting Witnesses for
Jesus Christ." Those whom the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be com-
missioned for this ministry at the 10:45 AM Mass. Catechetical Sunday is an appropriate time to
reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, to hand on the faith and be a wit-
ness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is also a wonderful opportunity for us, a community of
faith, to rededicate ourselves to this mission.
In the words of Bishop Robert Barron, “We are living in a secularized society which continues to
squeeze Christianity to the margins, or completely out of engagement with Jesus Christ and the
Church”. At the same time, we are blessed with an incredibly generous faithful who are sacra-
mentally graced to give Gospel witness in their homes, schools and workplace, if only they were
invited, trained and supported in their outreach as missionary disciples.
Here at St. Nick’s, we are blessed with wonderful priests, sisters, teachers, catechists, instructors
and volunteers who are committed to serve this parish family with their teaching and good exam-
ple. Let us use the coming year to reflect on how the Bible and in particular, the Ten Command-
ments and the Beatitudes, provide the spiritual and moral foundations for our Christian life.
I am grateful to The Light of Christ Prayer Community for holding the Dinner and Dance and
Prayers for World Peace. It was a moving way of remembering all the victims of 9/11 and pray-
ing for them.
Today is Our Parish Feast Day
As we celebrate our Parish Feast today, Sunday, September 16th at the 12:15pm Mass, we
pray that following the example of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, our Patron Saint, our parishioners
may continue to grow in faith, love and service of God and one another. Jordan of Saxony tells
us about the great brotherly love of St. Nicholas: “To the sorrowful, he was joy, to the afflicted,
comfort, to the divided, peace, to those who toiled, refreshment; to the poor, relief, to the cap-
tives and the sick, a powerful remedy.” We, the family of St. Nick’s, are invited to emulate his
great love for God and others in our love and concern for the people around us!
Happy Feast Day!
Fr. John Francis

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Faith Formation classes begin today, September 16th,
at 8:45 am followed by Mass at 10:45 am. Please
come to the blue door of the Faith Formation Center.
We are still accepting registrations all week. May we
all do our part to invite children to come to learn about
God, Jesus, the Bible, etc. During the 10:45 Mass the
Catechist will be blessed and commissioned for their
mission as Catechists.
We also have begun the Catechesis of the Good Shep-
herd program for children 3, 4, and 5 years old. It is a
beautiful program based on Maria Montessori’s
method of education. They will not be bored because
there is a great deal of involvement of the children in
different learning activities. Give it a try; I am sure
they will be happy! These classes are also in the Faith
Formation Center at 8:45am on Sundays.
The RCIA sessions for adults will begin on Sunday,
September 23rd at 10:30 am in the Faith Formation
Center. Adults who need Baptism, Holy Communion,
Confirmation, and /or Matrimony, please call Sister
Alice at 718-591-6536. If the day or time is not possi-
ble for these adult sessions, again please call Sister
Alice to try to arrange an alternative.
Bible classes for adults in English and Spanish have
begun. These classes are being offered twice- once in
the morning and the same class is repeated in an eve-
ning. This will hopefully make it more convenient for
all who wish to be involved in studying the Bible.
The classes in English are on TUESDAYS at 7:00pm
and repeated on THURSDAYS at 10:00am. The ses-
sions in Spanish are on WEDNESDAYS at 10:00 am
and repeated at 7:00 pm. All sessions are in the Faith
Formation Center. God bless you!

the actual drawing of the blood. You need to be 17 years old (or 16 with written parental con-sent). You will need a picture identification, like
a driver’s license.
See how important you are!

Victims and at Risk Infants.

cells, proteins, enzymes, nutrients and hormones “swim”.
