March 12, 2017 Second Sunday of Lent

Sedo is one of the millions of children severely affected by the worst drought in 50 years, prolonged by El Nino. Catholic Relief Services is trying to help com-munities like this one through REAAP, short for Resilience through Enhanced Adaptation, Action-Learning and Partnership. The program is helping nearly half a million people adapt new practices and technologies to mitigate the devastating impact and better withstand climate change. .

March 12, 2017 - Second Sunday of Lent

HOUSE OF GOD, GATE TO HEAVEN – Sharing Christ’s light in our worldWith this theme for our Faithraising Campaign as foundation, the members of our Campaign Cabinet gathered last Tuesday and Wednesday for their extensive and prayerful training. I am so very grateful to each and every one who will be guiding us in the next few months. They each have a heart of service and want to involve as many parishioners as possible on this spiritual journey of seeking to fulfill this vision for St. Michael Parish.

In the next week or two they will be calling many of you asking for your assistance on their particular team. I pray that you will respond with a generous heart and get involved. We hope that as many parishioners as possible willpartake in one way or another. Together, the Lord can do wonderful things in our midst, transforming our hearts and fashioning us into a people on fire with the love of God and the desire to share the light of Christ in our world.

Faithraising Campaign RalliesPlease plan on attending three campaign rallies when we will share prayer, the ongoing work of the campaign, more details about the plan, hear inspiring testimonies and have some fun activities for the whole family. Dates are: March 29, April 19 and May 24 at 6:30 p.m. More details as time draws near.

CenterfoldTwo weeks ago in the bulletin there was a special four page center section describing the various elements of our Faithraising project, why it is important, why do it now and why do it all. It also explained how this project is linked to the six element of discipleship, Vision (Strategic Plan) 2026 as well as the Strategic Initiative: “Enhance the Sunday Experience.” If you did not get a copy, please stop by the office and get one or go to our website or app and download the February 26 bulletin.

In addition to that bulletin insert, I want to mention once again how the Westside Chapel also will benefit. The sound system will be upgraded as it has surpassed its expected life cycle. The integrated A/V system will be tastefully installed and a per-manent crucifix will be hung above the altar. There are many details to be worked out and we will be seeking additional input from all parishioners.

AdorationFr. Cody and I want to invite you to prayerfully consider committing one hour a week in Eucharistic Adoration for the next year. It is such a gift. It becomes, for most folks who commit, one of the best hours of their week. Many have been adoring since 2003 when we began in Lent. We have been so blessed as a community to have Perpetual Adoration. Please fill out a signup sheet today at Mass or take it home, pray and then turn it in at the office or next week in the offertory basket.

Downtown Gathering Space ScreensThe Washington State Legislature upgraded their video capabilities and we are the recipients of two large monitors. These will enable clear images for our Life Teen evenings, meetings and projection of Mass at Christmas, Easter and other large celebrations. We hope to have them functional in time for the Easter Triduum.

One final note, on Sunday mornings you may want to check out “St. Michael’s Breakfast” at the Oyster House that is owned by a parishioner. This is what she writes on the menu: “The St. Michael’s Breakfast was inspired by the help the church has given to our community … a portion of the proceeds will go to St. Michael to show our gratitude for their positive involvement.”

Remember during lent with your prayer, fasting and almsgiving, “Keep it simple. Keep it going.”

In Christ, I love you,

CRS Rice Bowl is a Lenten program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving. The educational materials assist ongoing parish and school efforts in developing a spirituality of justice and solidarity with those most in need. Donations help fund CRS development projects in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America to produce more food, increase income and address poverty. 25% of contributions remain in this archdiocese for grants to parishes and organizations that help the poor in Western Washington. Every week during Lent we will highlight different countries and personal stories.

Last week Rice Bowl focused and encountered the Singh family in India, where a mother and father are using innovative farming techniques to feed their family amidst a flood. How is God inviting us to think outside the box in service to others this Lent? This week we encounter Evelina in Zambia as she and other mothers in her community learn new ways to provide nutritious meals for their growing children and families. How do we ensure that those who are hungry have not only food but true nourishment?

Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY DISPENSATION GRANTEDArchbishop J. Peter Sartain has granted to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Seattle a dispensation from the Lenten obligation to abstain from meat on Friday for March 17, the feast of St. Patrick. The archbishop encourages anyone who wishes to take advantage of this dispensation to abstain from meat on another day of that week, or to substitute abstinence from meat with a personal penitential act offered for the success of the proclamation of the Gospel in Western Washington, in honor of St. Patrick.

HAVE A LENT TO REMEMBER WITH FORGIVENNo matter what you've done, no matter how long you've been away, Jesus is waiting for you in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Check out this wonder-ful new program from the Augustine Institute today on FORMED!

MISCELLANY

LENTEN SMALL GROUPSWEEK 3 – The Samaritan Woman at the Well

This week Fr. Jim reminds us that Lent is a time to journey with Jesus and that like the Samaritan woman, we may encoun-ter him in a place and with someone totally unexpected. No matter where we

are on our journey of faith, it is important for us to be attentive to how Jesus longs for and thirsts for us. Allow Jesus' thirst for you to well up like the spring of living water that he talks about in this Gospel. May you become more thirsty for Jesus!

If you were unable to join the 300+ parishioners journeying through Lent in small groups, you can follow along by using the reflection sheets and Fr. Jim's/Fr. Cody's videos posted on the website at saintmichaelparish.org/learn/small groups. Click on Facilitator Resources.

Weekly reflection sheets in Spanish are now on the website!

CONGRATS, CATECHUMENS!Congratulations to our catechumens Brian Bowers, Emeory Darby-Palmer, Hannah Hach and Karina Noxon who celebrated the Rite of Election last Wednesday with Bishop Elizondo at St. Edward's in Shelton. Let us hold them in prayer as they journey through the Period of Purification and Enlightenment to the celebration of the Easter sacraments.

Archbishop J. Peter Sartain and the Inclusion Ministry of the Archdiocese of Seattle invite and welcome all to a Mass and celebration with our commu-nity with special needs.

St. James Cathedral, Saturday, April 1 at 11am.

Following Mass will be a dance and pizza lunch. It is such a fun celebration and gives our friends with disabili-ties an opportunity to be lifted up and recognized for their giftedness and con-tributions to the community.

Carpool to the event. We'll leave the SMP parking lot at 9am, returning at 3pm.

RSVP: Leanne Bergford (360) 292-7112 [email protected]

MEALS FOR MOMSThis ministry presents an opportunity to deliver dinner to mothers in our parish who have recently given birth, as well as other families in need. And the need is especially great right now!

Please check the Cook Up Some Love post on our website and follow the links to chose a date that works for you, plan a dinner, and deliver it to a family.

St. Michael School families also receive an hour of community service credit for each meal delivered.

NEED A PRAYER SHAWL?Prayer shawls can be a great source of comfort for so many occasions — for someone who is sick or grieving, having a baby, or maybe just going off to col-lege! Stop by the parish office and pick one out for someone you love!

Why not join the "Ladies of the Yarn" Wednesdays from 1-3pm in Gathering Space Room 3 and create your own gifts of comfort? Don't know how to knit or crochet? You'll get plenty of help to get you started. Please also remember that you can participate in this ministry even if you can't make the weekly meet-ings. Create prayer shawls at home then simply drop them off at the parish office.

Thank you to our team of sand painter artists: Eric Eble, Thao Nguyen, Laura Patron, Mary Rathke and Curtis Taylor who graced us with the beautiful installation for Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The artwork used images and materi-als to help usher our hearts into the Lenten season.

Sand reminds us of Jesus' forty days of prayer and fasting in the desert (MT 4: 1-11) and calls us to enter into a season of simplicity stripped of the frivolous. Forty candles represent the call to fasting and prayer during the forty days of Lent. A bowl of rice represents the cries of our brothers and sisters in need and reminds us of our call to generously give alms. A 3-wicked candle reminds us of the presence of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are near to all who call upon God (Ps. 145:18-19, Pvbs 3:8-9). A cross reminds us of the saving passion and death of Jesus, a call to repentance and God’s abundant mercy (1 Cor.1:18, Ps. 51: 11-12, Ps. 103: 8-13).

Sand paintings are created to be temporary. The medium, like the ash cross marked on our foreheads, reminds us of the temporary nature of our lives on earth (Ps. 103: 13-17) and calls us to develop a view toward eternity.

Providence Health International is an organization that has supported us over the years by donating medical supplies for our Journey of the Heart mission in Juarez, Mexico. The organization is presently in great need of toothbrushes and toothpaste for a trip that they are taking to Guatemala in April. Caregivers from Providence Health will travel to Guatemala to provide free medical and dental outreach to the poor and vulnerable. Many of the kids suffer from "baby bottle tooth decay", a common health issue in Guatemala in which sweetened liquids cling to a toddler's teeth causing decay and pain.

Providence Health International also collects and redistributes several other kinds of medical supplies. Last year, the team treated over 1,400 men, women, and children.

For more information, call (360) 493-5641 or email [email protected]. If you wish to donate toothbrushes and toothpaste, just drop them off at the parish office.

ARCHDIOCESE PLANNING STUDYParishioners throughout the Archdiocese are encouraged to take part in an arch-diocesan-wide planning study for a major campaign which will address clergy and religious retirement needs. Visit the Archdiocese of Seattle website to learn more about the study’s proposed goals and to participate in the study. Your input and participation will help us make prudent decisions moving forward.

To participate in this important study, please go online to www.seattlearchdio-cese.org and click on the “Planning Study Survey” link under the Archdiocesan Events and Activities section to learn more and provide comments. Use the password: Catholic.

Our Middle School students are holding their annual Science Fair at this time, so be sure to stop by the gym and help us celebrate their hard work. You will be amazed by the quality and scope of their projects, so you don't want to miss it. We look forward to seeing you there!

We are conducting Parent Ambassador tours all throughout this spring. Please contact us at (360) 754-5131 to tour the school with a current St. Michael parent and learn about the blessing of a Catholic education at your parish school.

Lenten Blessings,

Connor Geraghty, Principal
