PASTOR’S NOTEBOOK – May 25, 2014 – Sixth Sunday of Easter
Dear Friends,
I greet you all in the name of our Risen Lord! When Fr. Jim asked me to write the Pastor’s note-book for this week to say goodbye, I couldn’t help but wonder where time has gone. It feels like only yesterday when I wrote and first introduced myself to you almost a year ago. I think our
time together has gone into our hearts and minds, where we re-live every memory we have shared. As I leave St. Michael’s, I know I will be separated from you by distance, but not in my memories, because I will have you all close to my heart.
I thank you for all the hospitality, friendship, support and prayers. I have truly experienced what it means to belong to the Universal (Catholic) Church. Being far from home and my own family
has not been easy, but being around people I share communion with every day at the table of the Lord has made it easy for me to feel at home here. So many of you took a keen interest in my life and opened the doors of your homes for me, saved a place for me at your tables, and
shared the stories of your lives with me. Those moments never went unnoticed. Thank you.
The first friends I made here were the middle-schoolers whom I accompanied to Skagit Valley
for YMP and it was through them that I was introduced to many of you. I will forever treasure the life-changing experience that I shared with your kids serving the migrant workers. Hearing the young people’s stories gave me hope for the future of our beloved Mother Church. A week
after YMP, I was in Spokane for the Steubenville Youth Conference; another great opportunity to connect with LifeTeen folks, and I began a wonderful spiritual journey with them through Life Nights. Some of the young men told me of their desire for the priesthood. Please pray for them.
I connected with many more of you at Mass and the different events in the Parish. I got to expe-
rience your joy and love for your families, your faith, and your Church. Your lives and dedication have been a source of inspiration. May God, who inspires all good works, continue guiding you on your journey to holiness.
As I begin a new chapter of my life at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Tacoma, I will always look back and reflect on what I have learned here and use it to guide my ministry. I have learned so
much from my mentors— Fr. Jim and Fr. Michael, parish staff, volunteers, and from all of you by just observing how you live your lives. Truly, your lives preached the gospel to me without using any words. Your interest in my life, especially during the months leading up to my diaconate
ordination, humbled me. My words cannot express what I feel in the depths of my heart. I have no doubt that in the same way you accepted and loved me, you will accept and love my brother Brian Thompson, who will be coming to your Parish as a deacon and later, through God’s grace,
serve you as a priest. Deacon Brian is a wonderful young man and a blessing to the Archdiocese of Seattle. He is also blessed to be sent here!
I think of our parting as not really a goodbye, but just a temporary physical separation from one another. We shall always remain connected every time we partake in the One Body of Christ at the Eucharist and, since I’m not moving too far from St. Michael’s, I’m sure our paths will occa-
sionally cross. I hope to see you all on September 6th at St. James Cathedral in Seattle for Deacon Brian’s and my priestly ordinations.
As your friend, brother, son and deacon, my prayer for you is that God the Father, the source of all that is good, shine His light on you, illumine your path, strengthen your spirits, and remain with you and those you love all the days of your lives. Let us continue praying for one another
as we all strive for holiness. May God bless you. Zikomo kwa mbiri (Thank you very much in Nyanja my native language).
Pax et bonum,
Deacon Dean Mbuzi
Please join us in prayer on May 26th, celebrating
Memorial day with Mass at 9 am for all men and
women who died while serving.
Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal is still needed! Thank you to all who have responded
to the needs of our Church in Western Washington through the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. One
person or parish could not possibly accomplish all that needs to be done for over 60 ministries and
services of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your gift, no matter the amount, WILL MAKE
a difference! It is not too late to return your pledge envelope if you haven’t already
done so – imagine what can be accomplished if we all give;
imagine what can be accomplished if you give. Please fill out a
pledge envelope today or go online to donate:
www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate
Our Annual Catholic Appeal goal: $284,050
Parish Rebate Goal $50,000
Total Goal $334,050
% of goal reached so far: 83%
Participation goal—households: 1,250
Pledge Envelopes returned: 750
% of participating households goal: 60%
Remember, our Parish participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal isn’t just an archdiocesan fund-
raiser. It isn’t just an obligation that we have to fulfill. It is our contribution to the efforts of the
wider Church in Western Washington, in communion with our brothers and sisters in some 143
other Parishes. Without all of us, there is no Church.

How Does our Parish Financially Support
our Parish School?
Our parish school is a ministry of our parish and we
support it financially by a special grant based on Sun-
day contributions from our parishioners. For every $1
donated to the parish by a school family, we return
$1.90 in the grant. Once the grant reaches $302,860,
the grant is reduced to fifty cents on the dollar. For
this year, our grant to the school will total $403,000.
Our parish grant to the school represents the largest
income source to the school, by far—other than
tuition. This grant helps keep tuition costs down for
parents and helps the school as it strives for contin-
ued excellence in all its endeavors.
PARISH HAPPENINGS
HOLY HOUR IN ADORATION
At Gethsemane, while suffering in his Hour of Agony,
Jesus prayed for strength To fulfill the will of His Father
Jesus was comforted by an Angel from heaven.
Similarily, Jesus desires to share His love and compassion with us during Adoration.
He offers us comfort and deeper understanding
of His great love. He soothes wounds, and helps to heal our pain.
He brings us His joy.
He listens to our heart in quiet prayer.
We ask you to give Jesus your time as an Adorer.
Please offer Him an hour of your week, any day, any time. For more details, contact Roger Theine at (360) 357-6246 or at [email protected]

PARISH HAPPENINGS
WEEK 5. “FATHER, THE HOUR HAS COME”
In his reflection this week, Fr. Jim shares his desire for us, “May the eyes of your heart be enlightened.” He invites us to partici-pate in a Pentecost Novena (to be posted on-line). Please join
the Small Groups in this beautiful prayer.
“What has been most astounding to me in facilitating a small group
is listening to each member get something unique out of the Sun-
day scripture. Each person hears what God is calling them to do in
their own lives and circumstances. I witness the truth of the verse,
‘the Word of God is living and active”’ (Heb 4:12). Every week I am
amazed and humbled all over again.” - Diane

WESTSIDE CHAPEL VOLUNTEER WORK PARTY
Saturday, June 14, 9AM—Noon
We will plant flowers, rake leaves, and clean up
storm debris from the winter. This is a great chance
to meet some new people and help beautify the
grounds at the Westside Chapel. We will provide
the refreshments, please bring gloves and rakes if
you have them. See you there rain or shine!
Any questions? Call John Grausam at (360) 292-7107.
LOVE IN THE LITTLE THINGS—SOCIAL MINISTRY IN ACTION
“I am so impressed by the St. Michael volunteers at the women’s shelter and how quietly, gently,
and respectfully they care for the women in need. It reminded me of what Dorothy Day said about
those in need. ‘It is simple. We help the poor because they are Christ.’ Our St. Michael Volunteers
knew Christ when they saw him at the women's shelter.” - A Parishioner
FOOD BANK & THE OTHER BANK COLLECTION IS NEXT WEEKEND!
Every first weekend of the month, we take nonperishable food items and finan-
cial donations for the Thurston County Food Bank. The Other Bank, operated by
the YWCA, distributes personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies
which CANNOT be purchased with food stamps. These items are essential for
maintaining health and personal dignity. Cash donations are also much needed
and appreciated. Please use the blue-edged envelopes at the donation table
and put them in the collection or give them to a hospitality minister. As always,
thank you for your generosity!
ST. MICHAEL PARISH SCHOOL
THE MARIAN MOVEMENT OF PRIESTS will host a
Cenacle at St. George Byzantine Catholic Church,
9730 Yelm Hwy SE, Olympia on Saturday, May 31st.
Divine Liturgy at 9am with Cenacle following.
The Celebrant is Fr. James Lane. Reception to follow.
Questions? Contact Ita Bourke at (360) 459-5639.
“Cenacle” is a word for the Upper Room where Jesus celebrated the Last Supper. A “Prayer Cenacle” is a
group that gathers for prayer in that same spirit of expectation as the apostles during their wait there
prior to Pentecost. In many of her messages, Our Lady insistently calls upon priests, religious and faithful
to gather together with her in fervent prayer and fraternal love, in authentic cenacles as when the first
apostles gathered with her in the Upper Room in Jerusalem awaiting the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
COVERED PLAY AREA GROUND BREAKING
There will be a ground-breaking ceremony for the new covered play area on June 13 at 11:45 am
at the front entrance of the school. Come join city officials, the Knights of Columbus, and other
honored guests at this ceremony to kick off the start of this wonderful addition to our campus. The
play area has been in the planning stages and funds have been set aside for several years in antici-
pation of its construction. It’ll be an asset that benefits the entire Parish!

Signature Themes of Talent
“I enjoy my Arranger theme.
It allows me to be organized and
structured and empowers me to get a
lot done or help others get a lot done.
It is logical! These talents confirmed
what I already know about myself.
I understand more about ‘who’ and
‘what’ I am and how God wants me to
live my life.”
Thank you, Danny,

incredible talents with us!
