JUNE 19, 2016 - TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It is painfully disturbing for me as I write this column on Tuesday morning. Once again the e¤ects of sin in all its horror have been manifested in a mass taking of human life and a scarring of many other human lives that will have enormous e¤ects for years to come. I o¤er these words from Bishop Noonan of Orlando:

“A sword has pierced the heart of our city. Since learning of the tragedy this morning, I have urged all to pray for the victims, the families and first responders. I pray that the Lord’s mercy will be upon us during this time of sadness, shock and confusion. I urge people of faith to turn their hearts and wounds to the great physician, our Lord Jesus Christ, who consoles and carries us through suering with mercy and tenderness. The healing power of Jesus goes beyond our physical wounds but touches every level of our humanity: physical, emotional, social, spiritual. Jesus calls us to remain fervent in our protection of life and human dignity and to pray unceasingly for peace in our world.

“Priests, deacons and counselors from the Diocese of Orland and Catholic Charities of Central Florida are serving at the Aid Center established by the City of Orlando. They are on site helping victims and families on the front lines of this tragedy. Throughout the day, they are oering God’s love and mercy to those who are facing unimaginable sorrow. They will remain vigilant and responsive to the need of our hurting brothers an sisters.”

All this week, our daily readings at Mass have been from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

“You have heard that it is said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, oer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.”

“You have heard it said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.”

How seemingly impossible this seems, not only in light of this tragedy, but of so much violence, persecution, exploitation and hatred in our world today. As political rhetoric heats up that so often seeks to demonize one group or another, it is essential that as Catholics we look to the wisdom of the Church now and throughout the ages.

How do we respond with care and compassion without compromising safety and security? As the Capital City Pride Festival honors the victims this weekend, how do we join in Christ-centered prayerful sympathy and dignity with our sisters and brothers in the LGBTQ community, the Latino and Black communities and well as with other oppressed members of our society like babies in the womb and the vulnerable elderly, the homeless and the mentally ill? As Roman Catholics we believe that all lives matter -- from the moment of conception until the moment of natural death. We also realize that seeking to have a consistent ethic of life will bring us derision, mockery, rejection and even hatred.

Can we respond with and in the love of Christ? Can we speak the truth with love and not compromise the truth of Sacred Scripture and the accumulated wisdom of the teaching of the Catholic Church through the ages? Can we seek to love sacrificially as did Christ?

Let us pray ever more fervently this coming week. We so need the guidance, wisdom and courage of the Holy Spirit. We need the strength and support of our faith family here at St. Michael Parish. Let us seek to “love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:33-34)

I ask your prayers for Fr. Charles as he finishes his final days with us. Please fill out your spiritual bouquet slips and return them to us so that we can give them as gifts to him when he leaves on June 30th. He is assigned as Parochial Vicar with Fr. Maurer in the Lewis County collaborative of parishes: Centralia, Chehalis, Mossy Rock, Morton, Toledo and Winlock.

Fr. Cody Ross will be ordained this coming Saturday at St. James Cathedral and will join us July 1. Let us keep him in prayer as he begins his priesthood and his time with us.

Our Gospel Reading for today finishes with the Lord telling us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and who-ever loses his life for my sake will save it.” That may sound somewhat foreboding to us as we strive to follow Him and to be His disciples.

We need to see that from another perspective, however. Jesus was fond of teaching by using references to plants and planting. On multiple occasions he cites seeds in His teach-ings. If we consider it, we bury a seed; in e¤ect it dies. But it must die for it to fulfill what it was intended to be. It can-not produce fruit, become a tree unless it goes through the process of dying to what it once was.

That is Jesus’ message for us. If we truly wish to follow Him, we must die to what we once may have been, or in some cases to what we may think we want to be. We have to learn to look at ourselves as the Lord might look at us. The ongoing question is “What does the Lord want me to be?” or “How does the Lord want me to serve Him and others?”

It is not easy to serve the Lord. It is not comfortable to always think of others first. Yet, those are Jesus’ instructions to us. That is His call to us. As He reminded us many times, “I came to serve, not to be served.” That needs to be our goal as well. That is what stewardship is all about.

The gentlemen I serve dinner to with the Men’s Shelter are everything...and! It’s nice to hear compliments for your cooking and “thank you’s” for your e¤orts, but it’s so much more than that. I’ve gotten to speak with a few of these men and heard their stories. There’s one that has to be awake just 5 hours after lights out to carpool to his job up north--he has strong hands and an even stronger work ethic. Another is a veteran, Navy, I believe, and he was tasked with feeding the crew, so his comments on my dishes were appreciated all the more. And yet another who likes to joke and try to stump you at brain games; he’s very warm and joyful.

These are just a few of the men I’ve met and I consider it my pleasure to have done so even just for a little visit. These sons of God who are, as some would say, down on their luck — persevere. They hope and dream just as we all do and they’ve taught me directly how good God is!

Dear St. Michael Parishioners,

We have just concluded the 2015-2016 school year at St. Michael Parish School! Please know that I am grateful for our parish community’s deep commitment to Catholic education. I am so blessed to lead a school with such a vital partnership

between teachers and families, where the values of our school’s mission are fully alive at home. Looking back on this year, I am especially thankful for our parents’ commitment to: open communication with teachers, carefully monitoring their child’s academic progress, helping to cultivate healthy study habits, and (most importantly) modeling lives of faith within their homes.

We had a beautiful Graduation Mass and Graduation Ceremony for our twenty-eight 8th grade graduates. Our graduates have persevered through their studies, shown tremendous growth, and have successfully reached the end of their academic journeys at St. Michael Parish School. We are so proud of their accomplishments at our school and confident that they will continue to be successful students and faith-filled leaders in their high school communities. Please pray for our graduates and their families during their transition to high school. Please join me in thanking Patricia Cash for her tireless dedication to our school community as our PTSA President for this school year! Her vision, enthusiasm, and sheer love for our school has strengthened our community this year. In looking ahead to next year, please welcome JanAi Lundquist as our incoming PTSA president for 2016-2017! JanAi is a graduate of St. Michael Parish School and the mother of Jackson (Kindergarten) and Robert (2nd grade). I look forward to serving with JanAi and our PTSA Executive Committee in the upcoming school year.

It is not too late to register your children for the 2016-2017 school year! Please contact the school o°ce at 754-5131 if you would like to learn more about the school and explore the possibility of providing an outstanding Catholic education for your children. Tuition assistance is available.

Summer Blessings,

Connor Geraghty Principal

CONGRATULATIONS JPII CLASS OF 2016!JPII graduated 17 young men and women, its fourth senior class, on June 4.

This September, Pope John Paul II High School plans to welcome its largest freshman class and is reno-vating the school to accommodate the increasing student body. “We are adding three new classrooms, one dedicated to the performing arts and a second science laboratory, increas-

ing the commons space and upgrading our technology infrastructure,” says JPII’s President and Principal Ron Edwards. He anticipates everything will be in place and ready for the opening of the 2016-2017 school year.

Making the high school’s planned expansion possible is a $1.75 million capital campaign. To date, $1.55 million has been secured. Fundraising e¤orts are still underway for this project. Watch the progress at www.popejp2hs.org or like JPII on Facebook!

PENGUIN FATHERS!One of our small groups is made up of delightful young ladies who share prayer, service projects, and always a few bounces on the trampoline before they part ways. The families have been a big support to helping these girls grow together in their faith. But really stepping it up have been their fathers. They spend time together with the group, and now many of them are attending the Men’s Group on Wednes-day mornings. What a great example of leadership and involvement you are giving to your families!

Way to go, Dads!

SVDP DONATION GUIDELINES!All donations should clean, ready to use, and in good working order.

Clothing: We accept all clothing items. Most critical are underwear, socks, and outerwear of the season, warm coats and rain gear for fall and winter.

Shoes: We accept all, but the greater need is casual shoes for men, children, and women, and work shoes for men.

Bedding: We take sheets, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, towels and wash cloths!

Kitchen and tableware: That’s plates, glasses, cups, and all manner of tableware. All manner of cookware, frying pans, kettles, and co¤ee pots are welcome.

Miscellaneous: Bring us books, working TVs and other audio/visual equipment; toiletries, especially soap, shampoo, tooth paste, etc., child and adult diapers.

Note: We have no laundry or repair facilities. If an item needs to be repaired or laundered- please, we can’t use it! We simply don’t have the facilities to make use of it.

The majority of individuals and families we serve are under 30 years old — they wear casual clothing. Most must use laundromats for washing. Many face eviction or have been evicted and are starting over. If they have been evicted chances are they’ve lost everything. Thus, clothing, bedding, and kitchenware are their primary needs.

The Clothing Bank works together with Pregnancy Aid in accepting donations via the donation facility in upper parking lot. Pregnancy and infant clothing, car seats, diapers, etc. can all be donated utilizing that facility.

SAVE THE DATE - SMP SUMMER PICNIC!We’ve had to reschedule our picnic and Mass on the Grass to August 28! We normally hold this event in concert with Lakefair weekend (3rd weekend in July), but the school field is getting new grass and it won’t be mature enough in time this year. YOUTH MINISTRY

NEXT WEEK:

COMBINED LIFE TEEN AND EDGE FAMILY BBQ AFTER THE 5PM LIFE TEEN MASS!

For the last six months a group of teens and a few parents, sixteen people in all, have been praying and preparing for Saint Michael Parish’s first mission trip to Madian, Haiti.

The Life Teen mission in Haiti began in 2012 at the request of Bishop Pierre André Dumas, who asked Life Teen International to establish a mission to the youth of Haiti. The mission’s focus is evangelizing the youth and helping local churches establish youth ministry programs to provide for the spiritual growth of the Haitian youth. While there, our teens will participate in the mission of evangelization by visiting teens in their villages, schools, prisons and youth groups. We will also experience the life of a missionary by participating in daily prayer, holy hours and Mass.

Next Sunday, June 26, we will bless our missionaries at the 5pm Mass, enjoy some BBQ and send them forth. Please keep our missionaries in your prayers for the next few weeks and plan to join us next Sunday as we send them forth!
