(One of the following forms of the penitential act is used:)

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. “May God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.” Amen.

“Have mercy on us, O Lord.” For we have sinned against you. Show us, O Lord, your mercy.” And grant us your salvation. “May God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.” Amen. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “Christ, have mercy,” Christ, have mercy. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy.

“Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “Christ, have mercy,” Christ, have mercy. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “May God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.” Amen.

Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace to people of goodwill.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Music: (C) 1997, 1998 Steve Angrisano. Published by OCP.

O God, you are my God, and I will always praise you. In the shadows of your wings I cling to you and you hold me high. Through the day you walk with me; all the night your love surrounds me. To the glory of you name I lift my hands, I sing your praise. I will never be afraid, for I will not be abandoned. Even when the road grows long and weary your love will rescue me.

Responsorial—Psalm 63:2, 5-9

1st Reading - Isaiah 55:10-11

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

2nd Reading - Romans 8:18-23

A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans

Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower.

All who come to him will have life for ever.

Gospel - Matthew 13:1-23

The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear."

The disciples approached him and said, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" He said to them in reply, "Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted, and I heal them. "But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. "Hear then the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and re-ceives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Presentation & Preparation of the Gifts

Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (bow) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

After everyone has received communion and after the

Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the Tabernacle, you may be seated or kneel for a time of quiet prayer.

Prayer to St. Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle, be our protection

against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him,

we humbly pray; and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly host,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl about the world seeking the

ruin of souls. Amen.

July 12th, 2020—15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends: A reminder that the Cleveland Diocese has strongly suggested that all parishioners attending our daily and weekend Eucharistic Celebration to wear masks. We have masks available if you forget yours. Thanks to all who are sharing their time, treasure, and talents to be there for each other. We have flyers out on some of the food donations needed for SVDP. Also, we received five thousand dollars from the Catholic Foundation to assist anyone in need. Our playground enhancement project is one example of families coming together to bring some peace and normalcy to our young children who will be joining our family this year on the St Michael campus (something that can be enjoyed for years to come for future graduates) Please pray on this reflection from Scott Hahn: Today’s readings, like last week’s, ask us to meditate on Israel’s response to God’s Word—and our own. Why do some hear the word of the kingdom, yet fail to accept it as a call to conversion and faith in Jesus? That question underlies today’s Gospel, especially. Again we see, as we did last week, that the kingdom’s mysteries are unfolded to those who open their hearts, making of them a rich soil in which the Word can grow and bear fruit. As we sing in today’s Psalm, in Jesus, God’s Word has visited our land, to water the stony earth of our hearts with the living waters of the Spirit (see John 7:38; Revelation 22:1). The firstfruit of the Word is the Spirit of love and adoption poured into our hearts in Baptism, making us children of God, as Paul reminds us in today’s Epistle (see Romans 5:5; 8:15–16). In this, we are made a “new creation” (see 2 Corinthians 5:17), the firstfruits of a new heaven and a new earth (see 2 Peter 3:13). Since the first humans rejected God’s Word, creation has been enslaved to futility (see Genesis 3:17–19; 5:29). But God’s Word does not go forth only to return to Him void, as we hear in to-day’s First Reading. His Word awaits our response. We must show ourselves to be children of that Word. We must allow that Word to accomplish God’s will in our lives. As Jesus warns today, we must take care lest the devil steal it away or lest it be choked by worldly concerns. In the Eucharist, the Word gives Himself to us as bread to eat. He does so that we might be made fertile, yielding fruits of holiness. And we await the crowning of the year, the great harvest of the Lord’s Day (see Mark 4:29; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 1:10)—when His Word will have achieved the end for which it was sent.

Please Remember in Your Prayers Our Sick Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community and for all who are in need.

A Prayer for our Military:

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your

heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which

beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PFC Joshua Strenk, National Guard 1LT Zak Zubic, Marine Corps

Our goal is to provide prayer support and recognition for the men and women of the St Michael community who are serving on active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

If you have a family member or close friend serving on active duty who could use our community’s prayer support for their health, well being and safe return,

call the church office so we can add their name: Please provide their rank and which

branch of the service they are in.

Dear friends in Christ:

As you gather for meals please pray the following, seeking God’s Light and Peace through our Lord

and Savior, Christ the Lord I suggest that we all remember to drop a card and

call all our friends who are alone and afraid. We gather our strength through the Divine Physician.

Prayer before meals:

Loving Father, As we gather at our table to give thanks

and honor to You, We remember Your grace and open our hearts to Your compassion.

We are in a pandemic and our hearts are restless. The future which lies ahead is uncertain and anxiety producing.

We place ourselves in Your care, entrusting our lives to You. Bless our family,

our parish, our nation, and our world. Give us comfort and strength.

Help us to see beyond this challenge and find comfort in Your guidance.

Jesus, we place our trust in You. St Michael the Archangel- Pray for us!

Amen.

Adoration Chapel Meditations --from the Brothers in Christ Ministry of St. Michael (www.brothersinchristcmf.org/blog)

Hope Sprouts from Scorched Earth A crop of young faces sprouted at one of the main intersections of our town this summer. The faces belong to Independence High School’s Graduating Class of 2020, but they represent a generation of young people hoping to make their way in a post-pandemic world. Theirs was a graduation with a lot less pomp, under these circumstances. The owners of this crop of faces graduated online, via the High School website. Their pictures were accompanied by details about their accomplishments. But, although social distancing requirements depersonalized 2020 graduations, the same cannot be said of the graduates. Like good farmers during droughts, many of these young people made productive use of their interrupted academics. They actually made a difference in the real world—whether by working with people of special needs, comforting the sorrowful or feeding the poor. Many in the Class of 2020 received scholarships recognizing the difference they made—and plan to make—in the parched global environment they are entering. And though Independence High is a public school, its graduates are answering God’s calling. This Sunday’s readings present the word of God as nourishment for generations of the young seedlings planted on this earth to grow His presence. Whether their service lies in the fields of medicine, law, government, the Arts, or even faith, God’s creatures grow in the light of His love. Sunday’s readings help us make sense of His agriculture, starting with the inspired words of Isaiah (IS 55:10-11): Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth. What we farmers return to the heavens are prayers for the wisdom, strength and courage to prosper his plan. One of those prayers is for the graduates of 2020, who will be coming out of a pandemic-sized drought and into a world starving for their wisdom. Our current population is as hungry as the Romans were for Paul’s inspiration thousands of years ago. In the following letter, he seems to be preparing the way for new graduates (ROM 8:18-23): For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. The Class of 2020 has been loosed on a world filled with obstacles to that freedom. Overcoming those obstacles will require the will to find and nurture fertile ground. Whether they know it or not, they are taking on the same challenge Jesus faced as he entered public life. Indeed, his is the spirit of every graduating class. In Sunday’s gospel reading, we listen to this story from his perpetual valedictory speech (MT 13:1-9): “A sower went out to sow. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” The fruit of the Class of 2020 will feed a world hungry for hope. As they sow, so shall we reap.
