Today’s Gospel Reflection

First Reading: Is 40:1-5, 9-11 * Psalm: Ps 85:9-14* Second Reading: 2 Pt 3:8-14 * Gospel: Mk 1:1-8

NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Parishioners and friends, Saint Peter shows us a characteristic of God that we normally do not think about. He tells us that for God, “a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day” (1 Peter 3:8). Because early Christians sometimes complained that Jesus’ second coming had been delayed, Peter is trying to tell us that what seems like a long time to us is nothing to God. Like the early Christians, we may wonder how long it will take for God to answer our prayers. We may be praying for someone who is looking for a job, a sick relative, an end to abortion, or world peace. Some prayers require us to change, and we may not be ready. What Peter means is that a thousand years is not too long for God if someone needs that long to repent. God is far more patient than we are. God has been “waiting” over two thousand years for us to preach the gospel to all nations. God has been waiting for millennia for people to give up war as a means for solving our problems. God has been waiting since the beginning of the human race for us to learn how to love our neighbor. We might not be as patient as God, but we can help. Saint Peter says that we are not just waiting for the Lord’s return, we are hastening it. When we make a choice that is based on faith rather than selfishness, we make it a little easier for people to believe in God. Jesus is the light of the world; he asks us to let our light shine, so that people can see Jesus in us. May our light “prepare the way of the Lord” (Mark 1:3). Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Today’s readings combine to tell a story of eagerness—enthusiasm, zeal, wholehearted dedication. Eager anticipation is not a surprising topic for the Advent season, but very surpris-ing, perhaps, is what our readings urge us to be eager about: the cleansing of sins. Isaiah tells God’s people to cry out loudly, proclaiming that the Lord will come with power to comfort them and forgive all their sins. Saint Peter inspires us to “be eager to be found without spot or blemish.” In Mark’s Gospel, people from all over stream to the Jordan, acknowledging their sins and repenting. John the Baptist preaches the mighty power of the Lamb of God, who takes away our sin. Today’s readings wake us up, reminding us how great God is. May we eagerly seek the powerful peace that God’s forgiveness brings. There will be Penance Service on Monday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m. Several priests from other parishes will be in our church to hear confessions. Come and take this opportunity to prepare for Advent and Christmas.

P.S. The San Diego Padres Cantantes (singing priests of San Diego) will be performing in Concert: “Remember...Celebrate...Believe” on December 29th (Friday) at 7:00 pm; with the special participation of the combined choir of St. Michael. This will culminate our 60th Anniversary celebration as a parish. Proceeds from the concert will go towards the building of a new parish center. Come, let us remember, let us celebrate, and let us believe that our dream of a new parish center will come to reality!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many people think that Saint Francis origi-nated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines of villag-ers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depic-tion is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth cen-tury, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER For December

Gracious Lord, Let your goodness reveal itself to us, that we, made in your image, may conform ourselves to it.

We cannot imagine your majesty, power and wonder on our own; nor is it fitting for us to try. But your kindness and mercy reach from the heavens, through the clouds, to the earth below to show us the

fruits of your Incarnation. You have come to us as a small child, but you have brought us the greatest of all gifts, the gift of your

eternal love. Caress us with your tiny hands, embrace us with your tiny arms, and soften our hearts with your tender voice so that we might respond as humble stewards of your active presence in the world. We pray this through Christ, your Son who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. Adapted from a prayer by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

Stewardship and Christmas: Turning the World Upside Down

For women in the ancient world, motherhood was prized and desired above almost all else. Sacred scripture tells of many women who pleaded with God to let them conceive. From Sarah, the mother of Isaac, to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, the Bible is replete with women who finally, in their old age, were granted the gift of motherhood for which they had begged God. How marvelously significant it is, then, that in the town of Nazareth those many years ago, a young girl named Mary, unmarried and probably feeling altogether unready for motherhood, was visited by an angel who delivered God’s plea: would she give God a child? Mary’s response is a model par excellence for all those who aspire to be good stewards: “Behold, I am the Lord’s servant. Let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk. 1:38). And so the real mystery and beauty of Christmas is delivered: God turns the world upside down. In the words of the Magnificat, Mary proclaims the hope of every good steward: “My soul magnifies the Lord” (Lk. 1:46). He has dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart, lifted up the lowly, filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. Here is a new understanding of the God who desires not our begging and our pleas, but our ‘yes’ to God’s invitation to be active stewards in his plan of salvation. For the Christian steward, the consumerism, the gaudiness, the excesses of our cultural Christmas can be overcome by answering the call to live simpler lives, to use less, to feed the poor, to quiet ourselves in stillness rather than grow louder in frenzied activity In her book The Vigil: Keeping Watch in the Season of Christ’s Coming, Professor Wendy Wright from Creighton University writes: “The ancient desert dwellers of our early Christian communities tell us that the surest way into the heart of God is to be still. In being still we learn to be attentive to the vast and hidden stillness that permeates all things.” In a world which prizes and desires wealth above so many things, the Christian steward finds in the stillness the true hope which lies at the heart of Christmas. Christ has come, and he comes again and again, and finally in the end, Christ comes. Once again, God implores us to receive this child in the stillness of our hearts, and respond to his call to transform the world’s values – to turn the world upside down. - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews, December 2015

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT \

Second Sunday of Advent Weekend of December 9/10, 2017 Today’s second reading is about Christ’s coming again, “The day of the Lord,” Peter calls it, but that day isn’t December 25th. It’s that other day, that second-coming-day about which Peter is concerned. He waits with great hope and anticipation for God to remake the earth into a place of perfect justice and peace. And he sets some demanding goals for the Christian community as it awaits that final day of accounting and reconciliation: strive to be at peace, without spot or blemish. Christian stewards work for peace. As we await the coming of Christmas, what can we do to promote peace in our homes, workplaces, community and world?

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we ask for Your divine guidance as we prayerfully move toward the realization of our new parish center.

Show us the way to meet the needs of our growing parish community. Lead us to committing ourselves with a spirit of true sacrifice. For it is always by sacrifice that we show our love of You and our neighbor.

Lead us to wisely use our time, talents and treasures as we move forward with Your holy vision. Inspire us all out of Your generous love, to be equally generous for strengthening Your Church and our parish.

Spirit of God, we praise You and adore You. We pray that Your Spirit will empower us to work strongly for the realization of our dream so that future generations will harvest the fruits of our commitments and sacrifice.

This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mary Mother of God, pray for us. St. Joseph the Builder, pray for us.

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us.
