March 5, 2017 - First Sunday of Lent

HOUSE OF GOD, GATE TO HEAVEN – Sharing Christ’s light in our world. We began our Lenten journey marked with ashes in the sign of the cross. As a parish community, we are seeking to make 2017 a Year of Trust. Today’s gospel gives us great reason to trust. It begins with these words: “At that time, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.”

Jesus seemingly had no need for prayer and fasting. He had just been baptized in the Jordan by John and heard the words of the Father, “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” It is from this experience that the Spirit of God leads him into the desert to confront the heart of darkness of human sinfulness. It is the Holy Spirit that not only guides Jesus but is also with Jesus in this time of prayer and fasting, this time of preparation to do spiritual battle with the devil, the Prince of lies. Linked to our first reading, we see Jesus as the new Adam who trusts in what the Father has told him and is not deceived by Satan. Jesus, unlike Adam and Eve, trusts in what the Father had told him and because of that is able to resist the temptation for something less.

The Holy Spirit is leading the Church into this Lenten journey. I also believe after much prayer, discussion and discernment, that the Holy Spirit is leading us on our Faithraising Campaign to help continue the work of fashioning us into a holy people who are called at this particular time and in this particular place to share Christ’s light in our world.

It is with a grateful heart that I introduce to you our Faithraising Campaign Cabinet. These brothers and sisters of ours will be leading us on this journey of faith these next months. I’m thankful for their generous response to take on yet one more respon-sibility on behalf of us all. In the coming weeks they will be contacting many of you to assist them in sharing not only some of the tasks but also the great joy that comes from seeking to discern God’s will in our lives. Let me introduce you.

Changes and OpportunitiesWe’ve experienced much staff change since the beginning of our Pastoral Year on July 1, 2016.  This included the retirement of Jeanne Pruitt, our Receptionist, and Mary-Jo Kelly, the Administrative Assistant for Faith Formation. Ralph Shawver, our Steward for Communications & Stewardship left the staff to return to Virginia and care for elderly family members. Also, Lorri Targus, John Terranova, Kathy Steinbrecher, Debs Pocos-Dugan and Diane Steinbrecher each stepped back from their staff responsibilities this past fall.

We’ve been blessed to fill all these empty shoes with Bob Glenn as Receptionist; Laura Patron as Administrative Assistant for Faith Formation; Mona Bishop as Administrative Assistant for Time, Talent and Treasure; Doug Micheau as Special Assistant to

Hello, my name is Mona Bishop. I am the Admin Assistant for Time, Talent & Treasure. I keep the member database up to date, verify our volunteers are in compliance with all Safe Environment requirements and assist with the fall Stewardship pledge drive, ministry sign-ups,and the Annual Catholic Appeal.

Before moving to Olympia, I was on staff at St. Cecilia’s in Stanwood for more than 15 years as the Office Manager. As it is a small parish, I wore many hats and have a wide background of church ministries. I am also a Tribunal Advocate.

I grew up in the woods of Maine and served 4 years in the Air Force. I have two grown children and four grandsons. I enjoy running, cooking and journaling.

I feel incredibly blessed to be able to continue to serve God and His Church here at Saint Michael Parish.

me in the areas of Strategic Planning, Stewardship and the Faithraising Campaign; Greg Snyder (Seminarian) for Pastoral Care; Cecilia Brennan for RCIA and Erika Peterson as Life Teen Band Director.

We will continue to experience additional changes as we head into spring. We hope to fill our newly-created position of Steward for Evangelization. This position is essential to achieve our Vision 2026 for the SHARE element of discipleship: "In 2026, Saint Michael Parish is a vibrant evangelizing community drawing people to Christ..." This position will also be central to the implementation of our current Strategic Initiative:  Evangelization and Outreach – Reach out to the community to bring the Good News to all.

Other staff changes (and upcoming searches) include seminarian Greg Snyder, who has been helping in the area of Community Outreach, leaving us in the spring. Rachel Yabut, our Steward for EDGE and Campus Ministry is taking a full-time position at our parish school as 7th Grade Homeroom and middle school history teacher. She has been a blessing to our middle school youth ministry these past five years. Cecilia Brennan, our Steward for RCIA, will leave to take on full-time duties as a canon lawyer, both in our archdiocese and other dioceses. Kimmy Jones, our Steward for Weddings and Community Events will leave us as she welcomes her fourth child in early summer. Terry Walter, Parish Administrator, will retire at the end of June.

Each of these folks has been a true blessing for us as a parish. I am personally grateful to have shared ministry with them. I am also grateful that these changes are organic and that all are moving on to wonderful new adventures in their personal and professional lives!  Many remain in the parish and will be visible and active in our varied ministries. While a turnover of fourteen employees in less than a year could be very ominous, we have experienced great joy knowing that all have left with good will toward the parish and gratitude for their time employed here.  God bless them all!

Position descriptions and applications are available on our parish website. If you know of any qualified persons, please recommend them. Thank you.

Shrines of Italy Pilgrimage: October 31 – November 11I am very pleased to announce that I’ve finalized a pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi, Florence, Loreto, San Giovanni Rotondo and Rome along with other stops as well. This will be a very special pilgrimage. We are having an informational gathering on Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30pm in the multipurpose room. Brochures will be available shortly. There are 44 spaces available. It is my hope that most spots will be filled with members of Saint Michael Parish, their family members and friends.

LENTEN SMALL GROUPSWeek 2: The Transfiguration and "Return of the Jedi"!

This week Fr. Cody explains to us how the Transfiguration reminds him of the ending to the Star Wars movie "Return of the Jedi". Watch the DVD in your group to see how!

Fr. Cody also talks to us about how this mountain top experience was meant to strengthen the apostles for what was to come. Mountain top experiences aren't just for the disciples, but for every human person. But for Peter, as for all of us, it isn't possible to "pitch tents" and stay up there forever. Ordinary life isn't lived on the mountain top, it's lived in the plains and valleys. Come and learn what our important roles are in allowing those moments to strengthen us and deepen our conversion.

If you were unable to join the 300+ parishioners preparing for Advent in small groups, you can follow along by using the reflection sheets and Fr. Jim/Fr. Cody's videos posted on the website at saintmichaelparish.org/learn/small groups. Click on Facilitator Resources.

Dear St. Michael Parishioners,

We have developed an outstanding Pre-K program that prepares our stu-dents for Kindergarten both socially

and academically. Our five-day per week program offers children an opportunity to grow through an enriching faith-based curriculum. We cultivate a welcoming, friendly atmosphere and we have an open door policy for all our parents to become involved in the classroom activities.

We offer a tailored program for all academics so that each child has the opportunity to work at his or her own pace. Our program offers an introduction to Spanish and a hands-on, stimulating curriculum.

S.T.E.M is incorporated in the program weekly, as well as a full phonics program. Our children also have the opportunity to attend P.E. and Music classes through our specialists. They also visit our school library on a regular basis.

Registration is now open for our morning and afternoon classes. This year's Pre-K program is fully enrolled, so I would encourage you to contact us immediately if you are interested in enrolling for the 2017-2018 school year. Please call us at (360) 754-5131 to learn more and schedule your tour.

Blessings,

Connor Geraghty, Principal

ANOINTING OF THE SICKIn the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.

The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physi-cally healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.

SHOULDER TO SHOULDERHow many times have we heard Fr. Jim marvel at the generosity of Saint Michael parishioners? We are blessed to be a family of families who truly care about one another.

That spirit of generosity is clearly demonstrated in the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry which was crafted by Fr. Jim at the height of the last recession. He used the rebate from the Annual Catholic Appeal to create a special fund

to help parishioners who were struggling financially. Parishioners have continued to donate to the fund, allowing the ministry to continue.

Here’s how it works: Parishioners who find themselves in a financial crisis complete a confidential application that is screened by a committee of parishioners who, in turn, make a funding recommendation to Fr. Jim. If approved, the parish issues a check directly to the service provider, not the applicant.

Shoulder to Shoulder dollars paid to replace a leaking roof that had resulted in mold which, in turn, seriously jeopardized the health of a parishioner and her disabled child. Shoulder funds also paid to repair a van that was used as the only source of income for a parish family. Contributions have been used to pay unanticipated med-ical and utility bills as well. In some cases after an unexpected job loss, Shoulder dollars have paid the rent to keep families in their homes.

Applications are available on the parish website or at the Good News stand. Parishioners who submit an application can be assured that their information will be anonymous and held in strict confidence.

Are you facing a financial emergency with nowhere else to turn? If so, consider filing a Shoulder to Shoulder application. Through the generosity of its members, your church family is here for you.

Thank you to our team of sand painter artists: Eric Eble, Thao Nguyen, Laura Patron, Mary Rathke and Curtis Taylor who graced us with the beautiful installation for Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The artwork used images and materials to help usher our hearts into the Lenten season.

Sand reminds us of Jesus' forty days of prayer and fasting in the desert (MT 4: 1-11) and calls us to enter into a season of simplicity stripped of the frivolous. Forty candles represent the call to fasting and prayer during the forty days of Lent. A bowl of rice represents the cries of our brothers and sisters in need and reminds us of our call to generously give alms. A 3-wicked candle reminds us of the presence of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are near to all who call upon God (Ps. 145:18-19, Pvbs 3:8-9). A cross reminds us of the saving passion and death of Jesus, a call to repentance and God’s abundant mercy (1 Cor.1:18, Ps. 51: 11-12, Ps. 103: 8-13).

Sand paintings are created to be temporary. The medium, like the ash cross marked on our foreheads, reminds us of the temporary nature of our lives on earth (Ps. 103: 13-17) and calls us to develop a view toward eternity.
