REFLECTION FOR HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY
Artistic renditions of the Birth of Jesus some-times depict a remote stable, far apart from other people and from human activity. But what scholars tell us about life in Bethlehem at the
time of Christ paints a different picture. The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Joseph and Mary going to their ancestral home for the census. They would have been welcomed there because they were family! While there may not have been room for them in the parts of the house where people socialized and slept – which is often translated in English as “the inn” – there would have been space in the family dwelling nonetheless, likely in a lower level near where the animals were kept at night. Thus, the Angels telling the shepherds to find the child lying in a manger was accurate, even if the manger was not out in a field somewhere.
The point to all this is that Jesus was not born ‘distant and separate‛. He was born into family, into community. In Baptism we are born into the family and community of the Church. We are not ‘distant and separate‛; rather, we are brothers and sisters joined together by Christ. How different our world and our Church could be if we recognized our relationship to one another, with God as our Father. The Collect, or Opening Prayer of Mass, for this feast reminds of the im-portance of family, and the example provided for us by Jesus, Mary and Jo-seph:
O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards.
Let us take this to heart and make this prayer our own. May God bless our families and our Parish Church.

Monday Evening Bible Study: Monday, January 7th

"David the King" by Bishop Robert Barron and Word on Fire. This program looks at the emergence of the King "par excellence," Jesus through the emergence of King David, the definitive king who would restore order to God's Kingdom to the Lordship of God after the fall of Adam. In "David the King," Bishop Barron helps us to understand this pivotal figure in light of Adam and Jesus, the King of Kings. This program is a 7-week program and meets on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 in the Kolbe Room in the church. The cost of the program is $26 which covers the cost of the workbook. (The cost of the workbook is presently discounted on the internet; if we can get the workbook at a lower price when we order, we will refund the difference.) If you would like to join our class, please bring a check of $26 to the rectory by December 22nd. If you have any questions, please call Joe Pizzino at 484- 883- 8985.
