The Craft & Community Guild A few weeks ago, Father Kevin asked if the Craft Guild might be interested in making Prayer Shawls that he could take to the sick and to those with whom he visits for

prayer. He explained the Shawls offer comfort not only to the recipient, but also to the family. If you can knit, sew, or crochet and would like to participate in this ministry, please contact Amy Anderson @ 678 962 3071 or [email protected] for more information.

Nativity of St. John the Babtist

What is the mission of the messenger? Today,

the messenger described in the Scriptures of the

Old and New Testaments is truly a missionary.

The feast of John the Baptist invites us to

consider ourselves as messengers; God’s

message entrusted to us; the people receiving

the message; and the messenger’s attitude. Just

as the prophet Isaiah foretold,

Saint John the Baptist bravely

accepts his mission as precursor.

The Collect today briefly

summarizes his beautiful life of

surrender. He is the prophet who

prepares the way of the Lord for

a community that, guided by the

Holy Spirit, is likewise called to

share the good news of salvation

to the whole world. We, the

Church, are also messengers

called to prepare the world for

Christ, who is the good news of

peace and salvation. We are called to be

missionary disciples who grow in the

commitment to welcome those who seek God,

and move beyond our comfort zones to the

peripheries of society to proclaim Christ’s

presence in the midst of darkness and sin. The

characters in today’s Scriptures reflect the

faithful response of the Church: the trust that

Elizabeth and (later) Zechariah place in the Lord,

the persistence of Saint John in announcing the

way of penance and purification, and the public

testimony of resurrected life in Christ preached

by Saint Paul in the Second Reading. It is

important that our clergy and lay ministers

reflect upon these attitudes, and evaluate their

lives as missionary disciples in the ministry they

exercise in the Church. -Saul Oñate, DRE
