PEACE BE WITH ME!!??

We all go through periods of “… being troubled… with questions arising in our hearts..” We see the risen Jesus asking the gathered disciples in today’s Gospel reading from Luke: “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?”

Jesus first greeted the eleven and those with them: “PEACE BE WITH YOU.” Wow, how can anyone real-ly know Peace. How can I know Peace?

“The quest for interior peace is much more than the search for peace of mind. It really is about some-thing else: opening ourselves up to God’s actions. It’s important to understand a simple but spiritually important truth: the more we reach out toward peace, the more the grace of God is capable of acting in our lives.” These words from Fr Jacques Philippe, a French priest, a member of the Community of the Be-atitudes, and a renowned spiritual director, p 88 of April Magnificat.

St Francis de Sales: “….keep a tranquil heart. Only a peaceful heart is capable of truly loving.”

Fr. Phillipe: “…When we are at peace we see life clearly…. We should adopt the following rule of con-duct: when a problem has robbed us of our peace, the most important thing is not to resolve the prob-lem in the hope of regaining our peace, but to regain a minimum of peacefulness, and then to see what we can do to face the problem.”

In other words, solving the problem is not the way to get Peace!! Boy do I need that rearranged way of thinking about things! I need to collect myself when overwhelmed with a problem. Try to get some tran-quility into my heart… try to get some peacefulness.. into my heart… with the help of the love of God, the love of Jesus… so that I can then “see what I can do to face the problem”. The flow of problems is endless in my life (and always will be!). But if I can learn to live with some tranquility in my heart, some peaceful-ness with Jesus’ help, then I will be more effective dealing with the problems.

As we pray during this Easter Season: “All-powerful God, help us to proclaim the power of the Lord’s resurrection. May we who accept this sign of the love of Christ come to share the eternal life he reveals, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God , for ever, and ever.” (Collect prayer for Tues, April 10, 2018)

PEACE BE WITH YOU! ~ Deacon David Southworth

Theology 101: The Church as Bride – Part 6

Who is the Bride? In the Old Testament the bride of Yahweh was obviously the people of Israel, as mentioned in previous articles. These consisted of twelve tribes. At the Last Supper, Jesus celebrates with the twelve apostles, who represent the “New Israel”. However something is lacking. Obviously Jesus' follow-ers (the New Israel) consists of women as well. The story of the Samaritan woman seems to be the writer's at-tempt to further elaborate on the identity of the Bride. First, the Samaritan woman looks like a poten-tial bride. Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, was discovered by Abraham's envoy at a well. Jacob met Rachel at a well. Moses met Zipporah, his future wife, at a well. Certainly when the writer of this story describes the details, con-temporary readers would have thought about these things. It's interesting that Abraham's servant, Jacob and Moses are all strangers in the lands where they met their wives, and Jesus is a stranger in Samaria. When the apostles return from their errand, the ask Jesus, “Why are you talking to her?” Undoubtedly they recognize the association. And the Samaritan wom-an is no “ordinary” woman. She is, of course, a Samari-tan. The inhabitants of Samaria were people that had been resettled in Israel after the ten northern tribes had been scattered around the empire of Assyria. Historical-ly there were five tribes, each undoubtedly having it's own god or sets of gods. People (even the Jews) per-ceived their god(s) as somehow wedded to the land, and this was one reason the Jews in exile longed to return to Jerusalem. The pagan tribes in Samaria learned about the Jewish god from people who had escaped exile, and perhaps from the population of Judah in the south. Many adopted that god and at least some of the scrip-tures. They had a temple and a sacrificial cult, like the Jews. Now Jesus' statement becomes more clear: “You have had five husbands, but the one you are living with is not your husband”. The Samaritan woman, of course, represents gentiles, and in her own life she demonstrates the infi-delity of people. Like Rebekah and Rachel and Zipporah, she leaves her future bridegroom and brings back others, who believe now on the basis of their own hearing. Finally, living water. In popular stories Jacob had opened the well for Rachel and her family, and the water was “living”, that is, not stagnant. Living water (from a running stream) was associated with cleansing – in the Old Testament, a person made unclean had to wash himself in living water mixed with ashes. Jesus refers to this as “the gift of God”. It was customary for the bridegroom to present his bride with a gift. The Sa-maritan woman understands what is happening on some level, and leaves her water jar. Indeed, in Jesus' time the custom of the bride undergoing a ritual bath before her wedding was well established. Jesus is offering life, for-giveness, and a relationship.
