Uniting Yourself to God

Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Sound familiar? These words are spoken at every Mass and it’s meaning is very real and should fill us with wonder and awe! As we physically approach the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, our hearts should soar as we anticipate and receive Jesus. We are uniting ourselves to Him in the way that He desires us to be joined to Him. This profound act of Holy Communion with Christ should humble us and make us realize the immense love that Jesus has for each of us by giving us His Body and Blood. When we bow before Him prior to taking His Body our hearts and minds should be intently set upon Him. As we take the cup of Blood, or pass by the cup, we should bow our head before His Blood as a gesture of reverence and thanksgiving to Our Lord who died on the cross-for our sakes.

As for me, I need to reset my mind, examine my conscience and open my heart to the fact that this truly is Jesus that I am approaching. When I return to my pew I know that this private time with Jesus, now in my body, mind and heart, is a time of reflection and a very holy moment to savor within my whole being. Every Commun-ion should be this way: a profound moment knowing that I am joined to Christ and Him to me. I recently read the book; 7 Secrets of the Eucharist by Vinny Flynn. It is a very short read and gives great insight about the Eucharist. This book explains the Eucharist sacramentally. In other words, when we receive Je-sus during Mass or a Communion service, this is known as sacramental Communion. Did you know, when we cannot receive Jesus sacramentally, we can receive Him in a spiritual Commun-ion? Yes, we can make a spiritual Communion anytime that we are unable to receive Communion in the sacra-mental way. We can receive actual graces by wanting to receive Jesus and be united to Him before our next Holy Communion in the sacramental form. Vinny Flynn explained this in his book: sacramental Communion brings us into union with God, and spiritual Communion helps keep us there. Spiritual Communion has immense value. As with the Sacrament of Communion, purity of heart and the desire to be in union with Christ is essen-tial. St. Maximilian Kolbe explained this detail: that the graces of the Eucharist are received in proportion to our spiritual condition, our desire to be united to God. St. Kolbe then went on to say: since God always honors our desire to be with Him, the graces are not limited to sacramental Communion. “ At times spiritual Communion brings the same graces as sacramental”. Many saints wrote about spiritual Communion. A few examples of these saints are: St. Faustina, St. Padre Pio, St. Francis de Sales, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Catherine of Siena. St. John Vianney (Patron Saint of Priests) wrote: “ A spiritual Communion acts on the soul as blowing does on a cinder-covered fire which is about to go out. Whenever you feel your love of God growing cold, quick-ly make a spiritual Communion”. When we approach Christ in the sacrament of Communion or receive Him in a spiritual Communion, the words that we say from our hearts should be said with reverence and deeply expressed with immense gratitude and generosity of heart and mind: Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Amen!

God bless you all ~ Noreen DiPerri Tolosky, Chair Spiritual Life Committee

The Call to Holiness in Today's World – Part 2

The grace of Baptism allows us to be holy. We should let everything be open to God. The Holy Spirit in the end enables us to be holy, and when we are tempted to focus on our own weakness we should turn to the Lord and ask him to make us a little better. The Church has everything necessary for holiness – scripture, the sacraments, holy places, living communities, and the witness of the saints. Holiness grows through small gestures. The pope gives as an example, a woman who meets a friend and decides not to gossip; then goes home tired, but listens to her child who has some concerns. Finally she engages a poor person she meets rather than avoiding him. Sometimes God shows us an opportunity, but other times it is a matter of doing what we are supposed to be doing with more care, more attention. “I will seize the occasions that present themselves every day. I will ac-complish ordinary actions in an extraordinary way.” – Cardinal Francois Nguyen (while imprisoned). The New Zealand Bishop rightly teaches that we are capable of loving with unconditional love, because the risen Lord shares his powerful life with our own. Our lives demon-strate his power at work, even in the midst of our human weakness. A Christian's mission on earth is a path of holi-ness. It consists of uniting ourselves with his death and resurrection, but can also consist of reproducing in our own lives aspects of His life – his hidden life, his life in community, his closeness to outcasts, his poverty and his other ways of showing his self-sacrificing love. When we contemplate these issues, we are led to incorporating them into our own lives. Christ enables us to live all that he himself lived. The measure of our holiness stems from the stature that Christ achieves in us, to the extant that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we model our whole life on his. Every saint is a message the Holy Spirit gives God's people. But not everything a saint says or does is completely faithful to the gospel. We need to con-template the totality of their lives. We too need to see the totality of our lives as a mission. We must allow the Spirit to create in us the per-sonal mystery that can reflect Jesus in today's world. May we come to realize the message of Jesus that God wants to speak to the world by our lives. If we set out, despite mistakes and missteps, the Holy Spirit will bring it to fulfillment. We need to listen to God in prayer and recognize the signs that he gives us. We need to always ask the spirit what Jesus expects from us every moment of our lives. We cannot understand Christ apart from his kingdom, and our personal mission is inseparable from the building of that kingdom of love, justice and univer-sal peace. Christ himself wants to experience this with you, not only in the sacrifices but also the joy that this brings. We cannot grow in holiness without committing ourselves, body and soul, to this effect.
